First Gaming PC
I'm just starting to get into PC Gaming, so i don't know too much about building PC's and computer parts. So i got my cousin to help me to come up with three builds. I'm looking for input on each of these as i'm not too crash hot with PC parts and such.

get a good tower that you won't want to part with for 3-16.3 years. Fan potential is very important (and aircon is for limp wankers).
get a good and recent motherboard with sli/xfire capability. |

yeah, a good tower choice can save you in the long run, I still have my first tower, and is well over 15 years old, and only stopped containing my main PC two years ago

CPU: i5-4670K (3.4/3.8)
Memory Corsair Vengeance Pro 1866mhz CMY16GX3M2A1866C9 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 Motherboard Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H Motherboard Case Coolermaster CM 690 Power Supply Corsair CS750M Modular 80 Plus Gold Power Supply HDD Seagate SSHD 2TB SSD Samsung Evo 240GB GFX Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 OC Edition 4GB This one is a good mix of gear. However I'd look at changing the RAM to G.Skill Ripjaws X F3-17000CL11D-8GBXL (2x4GB) DDR3. Nothing will push you anywhere near the 8GB barrier, this RAM also runs at 2133Mhz and is less than half the cost. Over $100 savings there. Also, you only consume 2 slots and consume less power (and possibly gain better clocks). Plus you can add another 2 when you're ready and gain the 16GB total. If someone is telling you Corsair is "simply" better as a blanket statement, consider that G.Skill hold most of the world records in regards to memory speeds on LN2, I've run a few 2400Mhz sets on systems I've built and have never had an issue. (they get stressed for a good day as well) A 750W power supply won't be needed for this system either. At max, it will draw no more than 400W, that includes loading it with 6 spinny spinners, USB s***, etc. Consider a 500-550W unless you intend on buying a second video card. If you did, the system would draw no more than 600W, so perhaps then a 700-750W is adequate. (The choice of buying a Gold PSU is a good one though) Lastly, if those savings in funds can help you afford it, complement this system with a GTX 780Ti (if at all possible) otherwise the 780 (non Ti). Also, with the CPU, be aware the 4670K is not hyper threaded, so you get 4 threads instead of 8. My mates 4760K is really pushing to keep up with what he's running - so also consider a 4770K as it has 8 threads. Games such as BF4 run on 12 threads here so don't stick to the old 'games only use 1/2 thread' mentality, the devs are getting better and better at multithreading, hence 4770K and 780(maybe Ti) are a very future proof setup. Er.. Pass that on to your mate I guess, most of that will probably be verbal spaghetti for you. |

Chose the corsair ram set as it was the cheapest 16gb kit (on the site I was using to estimate the build cost) with decent timings. good point on using the 8gb kit. Not really a fan boy for any brand I just haven't kept my ear to the ground so I am out of date as for which models are good bang for buck or performance. With this build I think the bang for buck thing was in mind, the 4770k throws on another $120. Which in my mind isnt worth it but will have a look at some benchmarks Can you recommend some ATX towers with decent air cooling capability? if it doubles as having good sound insulation that would be a plus. And what is the "Go to" decent air cooler these days? Last time I checked it was the thermalright Ultra 120 but that was a long time ago :P |

I think ph33x pretty much hit everything on the head.
Though I will say that the 4670k should still have more than enough grunt for anything today. I am running a 3570k myself along side a 7990 and have yet to find a game this combo couldn't om nom. Of course, what he said about only having 4 threads is also true. So in the future, being that consoles now have like 8 cores, I can expect multithreaded games to be the norm rather than the exception. Just know that if you decide to stick with the 4670k, it's not like it will start chugging along at 30fps on modern games because it simply won't. |

I built a system for a mate with a 4670K (non-Z87, no oc) and a GTX770. It runs BF4 no worries. In fact we turn the supersampling resolution up a tad. Consider that BF4 is one of the harder games for computer hardware. From what I hear, Titanfall even runs better. (Not that this matters as I haven't heard a peep about Titanfall in almost a week now..) Can you recommend some ATX towers with decent air cooling capability? if it doubles as having good sound insulation that would be a plus. If you went Mini-ITX, a Bitfenix Prodigy are very good for cooling. I did a Corsair Obsidian 350D build but I wasn't happy with the front intakes. Really, any case with a low fan at the front to feed fresh air to the graphics card, and a fan at the back or top. Setups with 1 intake fan + 3 exhaust fans aren't the best as you're better off with positive pressure. Hard to blanket answer this one. Throw up a few links of what you think is good and I can have a look at those if you like, there's simply too many for me to stare at. And what is the "Go to" decent air cooler these days? Last time I checked it was the thermalright Ultra 120 but that was a long time ago :P Balls to wall? Noctua NH-D14. You also have Coolermaster Hypers, and stand up Phanteks. Note the design I'm talking about when you see the pics. These feed the air directly into the exhaust fans to keep case temps down. Also, consider that these were built to cool overclocked 130W+ CPU's. The 4770K is like a ~90W APU, so it won't ever get that hot with ANY of the coolers above. |

Yeah I was eyeballing the NH-D14
I have a mini itx build myself. 3570k @ 4.5ghz. In my own experiences ive kept onto cpu/boards longer than gfx cards so may well consider the 4770k. really depends on what the budget allows. |

If you got the extra cash then think of a 500gb SSD. I already have a 240 gb for my OS, BF4 and a couple of other things. I went to get another one last week but at the last minute I got the 500gig due to the size of some the games lately. Titan Fall just by itself chewed up 50 gb. That way I can now keep the 500gb just to add and remove at least 10 games if they top out at 50 gb each and a few more if they don't ;)

is there is - get to one and check it out dude. Talk to everyone you can there and build some relationships with peeps in the know if that works for you. I'm still blown away even today by the people I got to meet at AusGamers lans when they were operating. Brothers/cousins/mates/admins can distort your education of this expensive technology... leading to some very expensive learning lessons on your part, and the loss of some new opportunities you could make along the way. If you're just looking to buy something to do a job and don't care what's inside the thing.. there's nothing wrong with that. What's good these days? GTX780Ti is pretty ok. I read yesterday that there is a 6GB version of the 780 on the way as well, and not long after, a 6GB 780Ti. All them Titan owners must be sick of getting the d*** by now. |

Ok so after making some changes this is what i have

Hardware looks good, but it won't fit into that case. The Strider PSU's are very good. I've used a 1200w in my gamer for 12 months now and it hasn't missed a beat, very efficient under load as well.
If you want that case though, you'll need to change the mobo to M-ITX form factor, unless you had planned to modify the Prodigy to fit your equipment. It has been done, but it's not minor work. they're all equally not found.
as for gpu - anything that doesn't bottleneck your cpu! (I've got a 6950 throttling an i7 2600k that sits at 3.2gh cos there's not much point in pushing it... could get another 6950 though if I could find one... ) |

How much did you spend in building those? How much does each part cost? Is it preferable than buying finished one? May I know your purpose for creating those? As someone who at the moment plays Diablo 3 and that's about it, I don't understand the need for high end video cards :( Recently got a 750Ti to replace a 460GTX... meh.
For me though, never going back to mechanical HDDs. Got 3x SSDs in my desktop at the moment, yay load times! |
