So I was surprised how little I'd heard of this, I only found out about it because a youtuber I watched mentioned he was doing some kind of release thingy for it.
The first ep is out on various websites (They're showing for free on the show's website, so don't feel bad about it). So far, it seems like it's trying to be Game of Thrones - Pirates. Setting up some intrigue and back room plots along with a bit of action and some genuinely chuckle-worthy moments, I didn't get bored at any point during the pilot, I was left wanting more. It's currently sitting at 8.6 for user ratings on IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2375692/ Since I didn't see a thread, I figured I'd get it started. Anyone else catch it? If not, go watch the pilot. http://www.starz.com/originals/blacksails |
i saw some boobs from it just this morning!
|
going to watch it tonight and maybe that new musketeers show as well.
|
Yeah, +1 to both shows I'm liking the fact that the main characters are more gritty, than pretty. |
Outside US or US Territories |
It's set some 20 or so years before the events of Treasure Island.
|
I'm not sold on it just yet.
There is a lot of cheese but sometimes it takes actors a while to work out their characters. The first ep of GoT for instances looks pretty bad when compared with the rest of the show. Perhaps I'm just looking for something a little more cliche but there were no yarrs or me hearty's or over the top pirate like characters and no sense of adventure from the first episode. |
My expectations dropped a bit when the inevitable hawt lesbian scene started.
|
I'm not sold on it just yet. I wasn't expecting -that- much adventure in the first episode. As always, the pilot is usually 7/10th's exposition and character meeting and then 3/10th's setting stuff up for later in the season. That said, there was enough going on to keep me entertained. As for the yarrs and me hearty bits, I refer to the guys who did the epic western series "Deadwood". They tried using English of the day, but it was hard to take seriously and so instead went with calling everyone c**** because it made it sound grittier (as intended) to us modern folk. I think the same sits here. If Deadwood or this were to speak in "ye olde english" of the day, I think most people would be like "da fuq is this s***?" and spend more time laughing at the words than listening to what's contained in them. |
pirates didn't speak with "arrs" and "mateys". it's thanks to cartoons that the general population thinks they spoke that way. they would have just spoken the language of their home country.
|
i enjoyed the first episode especially because i knew who most of the pirates were thanks to AC4.

Off topic, but I'm getting new shows to watch, is Deadwood worth watching after all this time?
|
Deadwood is great, but the first 3/4 of the first episode makes it seem like it's going to be a bunch of guys trying to out-macho each other, which isn't really the case. I almost didn't get past there, a friend didn't.
|
imo, deadwood is the only tv series in existence that beats the wire.
|
Off topic, but I'm getting new shows to watch, is Deadwood worth watching after all this time? It's an amazing watch. The only thing is if you can't stand things left unfinished, you might rage a bit at the end of it, since they allude to more seasons coming but never resolve it. Even still, it's well worth a watch. I was left wanting more. Also, make sure you get the bloopers. Some funny s*** in those (watch them after each season). |
I'm going to be the odd one out here and say that I didn't like Deadwood.
Overall it is a good show. I found that the modern swear words took me out of the period that the show was set. The early episodes with Wild Bill are the best. I'd recommend Hell on Wheels over Deadwood if you are looking for a western drama. Just my 2 cents... c*** sucking c**** |
+1 for swedgen and Mr Wu
if you are looking for a show deadwood has a bit pf an unique twist with the quality wild west setting |
I'm going to be the odd one out here and say that I didn't like Deadwood. I'd have to say that it threw me at first, but I was able to reconcile the fact that if he'd been calling him a "sleazy varmint", I wouldn't have been able to take the show seriously :P |
what kind of modern swear words? I'll just say that they don't hold back... Anyone from a public school will feel right at home. |
if it's the 'f' word then it's not exactly modern. it's been around for hundreds of years.
|
Just watched the first episode tonight, absolutely awesome. After Assassin's Creed 4, I'm super keen for more pirate drama. Also that Blackbeard joke was pretty good, was actually expecting him due to all the smoke.
|
I thought it was pretty s***. Must just be me.
|
It was a bit meh. I will give it another go.
|
Overall it is a good show. I found that the modern swear words took me out of the period that the show was set.I dunno about that. C*** has been in use since the middle ages apparently (quite a bit in the 18th century) and f*** since the 15th century. So probably all fits in right well for Deadwood? As for Black Sails. Watched the first 2 episodes at a friends place. I found it all quite boring. The story is s***. The characters seem s***. It doesn't feel like a drama. It feels like an adventure comedy 1/2 the time or something like that. Maybe it will improve with time. |
http://www.ausforums.com/images/icon7.gif I'm just quoting what the director / writer / someone said in an interview I saw ages ago. Basically they said they'd spoken to "experts" on period speech and common cuss words and they also filmed a few scenes (or maybe a whole ep?) using western vocab and they said no-one there could take it seriously. |
It's pretty average, Character development is non existent , Story line is smavage. Wouldnt really recommend this tbh
|
Vikings is way way better.
Get on that s***. Way more similar to GOT if thats what you're after. |
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gropec***_Lane
Gropec*** Lane /ˈɡroʊpkʌnt ˈleɪn/ was a street name found in English towns and cities during the Middle Ages, believed to be a reference to the prostitution centred on those areas; it was normal practice for a medieval street name to reflect the street's function or the economic activity taking place within it. Gropec***, the earliest known use of which is in about 1230, appears to have been derived as a compound of the words grope and c***. Streets with that name were often in the busiest parts of medieval towns and cities, and at least one appears to have been an important thoroughfare. C*** was a word used at the time. |
Vikings is way way better. +1 Vikings is awesome. i tell the kids it's the real life GoT. |
I completely forgot about this show, seemed to have potential but I got distracted by AC4 funny enough. Is it any good now or is it canned?
|
inevitable hawt lesbian scene started. But its an interracial hawt lesbian scene... Black Sails doesn't really get going until the last three episodes... The Musketeers is ok if you like interracial hawt lesbian scenes with swords.....well ok no lesbians.... |
vikings this season has turned into neighbours with the occasional brutal slaughtering... even my mrs likes it.
|
I'm up to episode 5.
It definitely has 'Starz' written all over it. Their production value's are awesome (the look of their shows is quite alright imo), but their capacity to tell a story just seems lacking. (coming at this as someone not formally educated in the delivery of television/motion-picture type stories) My latest bug-bear. Ep 5, (Potential Spoilers) Spoiler: Capturing the merchant vessel with the guns they wanted... suddenly, the captain of the merchant ship has called ahead to tell the Scarborough where they'll be when they're being attacked by pirates... So long as you can accept a good level of cheese their shows are ok. But the 2014 TV shows season has already spoiled me with the likes of True Detective, and the return of my current crack in Game of Thrones. |
Why, of all the more recent posts he could have spammed on, did he dredge THIS one up lol
And runescape!? People still play that s***? lol. |
