Double Helix Game's Xbox One exclusive revamp of the classic Rare fighter Killer Instinct is among the first console platform titles to launch with a free-to-play business model, and the contents of the free component is expected to change over time.
Upon launch, the fighting game offered up one playable character for free, permitting all players to use Jago in battle for the last few weeks, locking the rest of the roster behind microtransactions. In the latest patch, the free character option has been changed to Sabrewulf, while Jago has been moved back behind the paywall (thanks
Polygon).
Publisher Microsoft has previously indicated that the free character is expected to continue rotating, presumably with the intention of encouraging frugal players to keep coming back for another look as the game continues to evolve.
A host of other changes accompany the character change in the latest patch, and you can view the full list on the official
Double Helix Games forums.
