Apparently none of them are going to function without this Day One patch, hope your internet isn't out on the 22/11/13 if you're getting one.
http://www.engadget.com/2013/11/08/xbox-one-day-one-update-details/ I've got one on pre-order but its getting wrapped and put under a tree so I won't see it till 25/12. |
Didn't they say this would happen when they backed down on the DRM stuff?
|
i thought that there were some that had already shipped (due to an error) and MS had to rush to nerf some of the features, but otherwises they were working well
|
Didn't they say this would happen when they backed down on the DRM stuff? They said its going to need a patch for some things, didn't say it wouldn't work without it. |
19th of June - Pretty much saying if you want to use it offline, you need the patch. So either way, you were always going to need internet.

Didn't Sony announce recently that PS4 requires a day one patch as well? Seems to be par for course. Makes sense considering the lead time there must be on production, the firmware/software on them would have gone through plenty of work since the one that was on the hardware when it got built. Wii U had to do it as well, it had a huge day one update to download before it would work.
|
Pretty sure even the PS4 is going to need a 'day one' patch, and across Kotaku I've seen it mentioned a number of times, 'for those picking the consoles up as presents, when you get home, run and patch the console before wrapping it up and sticking it under the tree to minimise disappointment'.
Hardware is no longer the 'benefit' in owning a console [ie gone are the console benefits of 'get home, insert cartridge, game on'] this last generation of consoles saw a much more 'Personal Computer' approach to gaming (installation required, patching etc etc) if the launch 'hype' (or lack thereof) combined with the drop in console price at launch in conjunction with 'day one' patching... all we really need is another RROD fiasco to pretty much seal-the-deal that consoles really aren't what they should be cracked up to be |
Both console require day one patches for adding in certain features, however the PlayStation 4 is able to play games without the need of going online to get said patch. Microsoft's Xbox One console differs here in that it requires the day one patch to even function in an offline state, and to allow disconnection of the Kinect.
For those grabbing the consoles and putting them under the trees, I would recommend what IVY mentioned, in pulling it open and updating it before wrapping. PlayStation 4's update rolls in at 300MB and available from us locally, with the Xbox One update said to be roughly 1.5GB though no local download as of yet. |
What a s*** fest, and they aren't even in stores yet. Sure, none of this affects me because 1: I have awesome internet, and 2: I won't be buying either. - However, this will affect a ton of people out there. I can personally vouch for 3 people who have bought PS4's for kids and don't have Internet that will handle large downloads without costing a lot.
I can foresee a ton of problems with these consoles. We haven't even seen failure rates, but I have some odd feels that it will be high. |
...this would be the thread to ask, anyone in here buying an xbone and running Windows 7 or 8 (or 8.1) and would like to report/PM me some detail?
I've pre-ordered an xbone controller, and want to use it on PC. From the press vids that have come out have stated that when you 'plug in' your xbone controller to charge, it disables the radio componentry (meaning all control signal etc is tx/rx'd via the cable) Would one of the 'day one-rs' mind plugging your xbone controller into your rig and reporting whether or not there are any embedded drivers in winblows for it? I don't have any RBJ's to trade, but if someone can PM me their results I (and the rest of the internet I'm sure) would be most interested in the results. |
Officially, Xbone controller won't be compatible with PC until early 2014.
|
also, dead rising 3 seems to be having some frame rate problems:
The statement from the team is that a locked 30fps is targeted here, but in the build we saw there's a huge gap to be bridged in this regard; drops to 20fps are consistent and sustained when outdoors, with 16fps being our record low during some of the biggest explosions. With Battlefield 4 on Xbox One, the drop to 720p opened the door to 60fps gameplay - Dead Rising 3's big issue is that despite the upgrades, the feeling in terms of refresh and response often feels very much like a poorly optimised current-gen title. |
Sony allow you to download the patch onto USB key prior to release. M$ are said to follow suit but have not released the link yet.

I can personally vouch for 3 people who have bought PS4's for kids and don't have Internet that will handle large downloads without costing a lot. If people don't have internet in this day and age that can handle a couple of of hundred MBs of download without falling over, then they just suck at life. Anyone who can afford to drop $600+ on a new console, can afford semi-decent internet (I mean s***, even bare-bones basic internet these days can handle that). |

Take it to McDonalds and pinch their WIFI if you have to! Or a mates house; I got unlimited internet so anyone I know needs something I'll let them come over and use it. |
If someone is buying it for xmas i am happy to play with it for a week and update it for them and give it back before xmas :)

I can personally vouch for 3 people who have bought PS4's for kids and don't have Internet that will handle large downloads without costing a lot. IMO home Internet over the next few years is going to change and the home console market / smart TV's and various other network driven devices are going to be a key contributor. (probably internet streaming services will be the biggest motivator.) Obviously this needs to happen regardless but I think more readily accessible devices like these that require an internet connection will drive the point home that things like the NBN are essential and a shift in attitude from government and those who oppose it (excluding crazy fundamentalists) is on it's way. While it will suck initially it is kind of on the purchaser for not doing research, unless of course the retailer lied about the fact that these devices require internet. I know when I ordered my Xbox One over the counter a few days ago I was told at the time that it will need to connect to the internet to setup... and this was from a random emo girl not one of the game sales people. |
Lol at Mass. Seriously dude - settle down.
OMG MS ARE BAD CAUSE THEY MAKE YOU DOWNLOAD UPDATES Take the console to a friends house and download the update... Seriously! You seem to have enough bandwidth to start s***** threads... I'm sure you'll be fine. |
"Aw shucks, the internet is out!"
"it looks like you've got yourself a $500 paperweight until your ISP comes back online." Oh man this article is ridiculous, making out like its 1995 and we all use dialups. I can't recall in the last 5 years having no net. This is such a non issue. "Fingers crossed your internet service is strong as we head toward launch later this month!" Today Tonight fear-mongering style! |

wonder if you could just plug it in at EB's before taking it home

It's a pretty lousy attitude towards consumers though. It's basically selling you a non-functioning product. A s***** attitude would involve them not going public and informing their consumers; seriously ever heard of production s*** just doesn't appear in stores around the world with instant demand. |
seriously ever heard of production s*** just doesn't appear in stores around the world with instant demand.WTF are you on about? Every other console has waited until the OS/system software was ready before they started manufacturing. |
WTF are you on about? Every other console has waited until the OS/system software was ready before they started manufacturing. Sony and Microsoft have continued to work out the kinks of their software that's what the update is for, if they waited for this to be completed the consoles wouldn't be shipping this month, that is what I meant. At least they have the sense to let everyone one know what they are in for, how wasthe BF4 launch I hear EA are still trying to fix it guess it's just the norm for day one updates and day one DLC. |
it would also be for their marketing dept. U get it home plug it in connect and now they know where it is so they know region numbers because they cant just rely on store quota's due to online shopping. Keeping tabs.
also if a bunch get stolen they can block serial numbers so u cant use it till u connect and if u connect they see it and block it so a stolen unit cannot be on sold unless its jailbroken i guess there are prob plenty more reasons than just "needing to patch some software" |

Every time it rains, when moving house, ISR dies and has to be replaced but short on cash so can't afford a decent one and have to wait, on holidays with nothing to do in the downtime now, Microsoft's servers are DDoS'd, Microwank has network issues in general and can't handle the influx of people. There, I've listed a bunch of common occurrences where you have a $500 paperweight. |

Anyone who can afford to drop $600+ on a new console, can afford semi-decent internet (I mean s***, even bare-bones basic internet these days can handle that). They haven't needed the Internet at that level. Frankly what you've said is very close minded and I thought you were above comments like this, perhaps not. And nobody knows what the filesize is so half your statement is made of straw. It could potentially be a few GB. |
Every time it rains, when moving house, ISR dies and has to be replaced but short on cash so can't afford a decent one and have to wait, on holidays with nothing to do in the downtime now, Microsoft's servers are DDoS'd, Microwank has network issues in general and can't handle the influx of people. Oh no, end of the world, once every few years you might not be able to play your XBox for a couple of days! How ever will you cope! Its pretty rare though that I've ever seen XBox Live go down from a DDoS or because it can't handle load or has a problem, I can only remember it happening like twice in the last five years, so I think its a stretch to call it a 'common occurance', same as moving house really. Sure these things might happen, but they're small blips on the radar hardly worth worrying about. Reminds me of when WoW servers have a problem and they need to do emergency maintenance on them and take them down for a few hours, everyone is up in arms and demanding compensation and abusing Blizzard for being so s*** and running such s*** servers. They ignore the other 360 or so days where the servers have worked perfectly, and just focus on the couple of days where they haven't, guess thats just human nature or something. They haven't needed the Internet at that level. Frankly what you've said is very close minded and I thought you were above comments like this, perhaps not. I don't think its closed minded, I don't think its a huge leap to assume in this day and age that someone who can afford a $600 console can afford basic internet services. I mean even my parents who barely use the internet at all except for the occasional email and some web browsing have some cheapass $30 a month plan bundled in with their phone with Telstra and it still gives them like 10gb a month, and they're pretty much the most technophobic people I know. And yeah, I was making assumptions about the filesize, was just basing that on the Wii-U day one patch really which I think was 250mb, but after just googling it, it sounds like it was a few gigabytes, so yeah I guess that could be a lot more of an issue for people who ultra bare bones low quota internet if it comes in around that size. |
Still, it's an issue which wasn't an issue before. There is no need to go so nuts with making consoles stay on the Internet all the time.
I mean, my computer works fine without the Internet - Oh wait, that is until random new-age software wants to see the Internet even though is technically doesn't need it (Plenty of SP games, etc) The difference is, WoW needs the servers to run. Consoles don't NEED servers, but they're being pushed that way. --------------- It's not the fact they can't afford Internet in your own logical example, it's the fact they don't NEED it. This is why they have consoles in the house and not computers. They're simply not at that technical level. Now they're going to this level, they may as well go whole hog and just get computer and Internet - a choice which wouldn't have crossed their mind 3 months ago. I know this through experience as they're all calling me and asking me about it. I'm sick of dealing with noobish stuff like setting up someone's Internet but it seems I'll be doing lots of that again soon or else they'll all go for TPG cause it's "Unlimited for x mount less than everyone else" and then I'll have phone calls at 10PM asking why their s*** is lagging. ZZzzzzzZzzZz |
wonder if you could just plug it in at EB's before taking it home no, they may pre-update the consoles before shipping them to the stores or they may offer the update on USB at release tho... stay tuned! |
I feel like saying it's DOA because it needs a patch is overkill...
And seriously.. we're not talking about a nintendo 64 here guys... b****ing about having to patch a complicated bit of tech is silly. |
