Apparently it's been heavily built around american intellectual property interests, an apparent crackdown on internet piracy in Australia, and supposedly may raise game prices.

Apparently breaking region codes is to be criminalised.

I think everyone already spotted that this was SOPA/PIPA by a different name...

Just tell me where I've gotta turn up with my pitchfork and torch and I'll be there.

Goodwork Wikileaks, this trade agreement is a joke and the general public need to be more aware of it's effects instead of just shrugging it off thinking "it must be good the Government said so"

I don't mind creators of IP having rights to pursue breach of copyright. As long as we recognise intellectual property as a form of property then those rights need to be protected.

I am more indifferent to the actual EXISTENCE of copyright. I think the evolution of ideas would be faster and produce better technology for society if every person was just simply free to make the best product they can. It is always going to be a tough question about how to protects the arts, especially movies and games.

My major concern is that free trade agreements are supposed to lower the cost of goods to Australia. There is no benefit in a free trade agreement for Australia if all it does is increase the risk of litigation against Australians, impose more conditions on purchasing of goods, and put the government at risk of being stuck buying brand name medicines.

Seriously what kind of numbskull would sign an agreement like that?

Don't we have a shiny new Government now?
Prime Minister Tony Abbott has indicated that he is keen to see the trade talks pushed to a conclusion next month, saying "there’s always horse-trading in these negotiations, but in the end ... everyone is better off"’.

Dr Rimmer said that Australia appeared "generally supportive" of the US or otherwise "quite passive" in the negotiations.

Tony Abbot?

Thing is, this coming out means nothing. what will people do? sign an online petition?!? f**** lol

Now if we got 150+ thousand people to call the MP's and complain that might actually make a difference but as it stands, the I'm pretty sure we wont hear anything in the media beyond these articles and lets face it people aren't going to go out of their way to understand how this affects them. they will just wine about it once its done.

One which by all reports Abbott is placing Australia to be unusually and unconditionally supportive of.

Let's just see what the proposed final agreement is that's presented for approval by Parliament. Negotiation is all tough talk.

Well, the answer clearly now is "you can't", except for ludicrously over-complicated legislation.

I don't mind copyright existing but think it needs to go back to the old 14 year model or whatever it was.

so, let me get this right.

under labour the ground work for high speed internet to all was laid
there was inquiries started as to why there was a high discrepancy in digital content between here, and the US
there was a removal of geo-blocking laws

overall there was a opening up of the digital front, and helping us gain access to content that we might otherwise not have

Under the libs, the ground work for that high speed internet is being erroded
the ground work for making price gouging has been put back in place, and the tool to enforce it are been put into place

question is, why are we putting into place protectionist business policies, FOR ANOTHER COUNTRY!!!!

Tough talk as in assuring your military superpower trading partner that you are onside with what they want and then giving them the gentle let down at the last minute, that we tried but couldn't sell it in parliament.

there is no reason to cave, the US kinda need us a little more than we do (we are a key place they want to put military, as there is not alot of other places that will let them atm)

also, we have taken a fair bit of useless s*** from the US under the guise of "partnership" about time we start to stand up, we have the leverage

Ok so the part about breaking region codes relates to modding the device, what if the device is region free as a built in feature or if you type in the developer code to unlock the extra regions on the device (My old Sony DVD player is region free, as is my Sony Blu -Ray player. And I used the dev code to unlock my parents ones, something like hold stop button type 001265 and hit eject, bringing up secret dev menu and selecting region 0) would these then be breaking that law as I'm playing region 1 dvds that I imported many years ago.

"we" won't do s***. Aussies are happy to go on living under a dictatorship as long as they can drink vb and watch cricket. Sadly, beer and sport is all the majority cares about.
