Maybe this is old but I hadn't heard it ; just got this info in a random newsletter from the state government:
. Rego stickers will start to be phased out next October, saving motorists time and effort, and taxpayers around $3.5 million a year. The full details are here. For me the interesting thing is that it sounds like we'll now have a state-wide tracking system for cars based on numberplates (..if we don't already?) but there's not a lot of info about that part of it. |
they did this in NSW last year i think, it coincided with all police cars getting computers installed in them linked back to the databases they need to check plates/licenses.
|
NSW started doing the same thing this year in relation to no rego stickers anymore. The bad thing is, I've already driven one of my cars for a month and it was out of rego. I didn't get the renewal letter and nothing else really reminds you.
The automated numberplate tracking is on most NSW highway patrol cars as standard now, while every car can check your details manually. You can tell if your HWP cars have this tech by looking for these: http://i.imgur.com/9bLZCRM.jpg |
wa hasnt had rego stickers for a while as well;
good. i felt pretty bad ass the other day though driving through an rbt with an out of date rego sticker. |
Maybe next they'll take on yearly inspections for cars instead of just when you sell it.

Something other states have had for a while. Took a forward thinking government to bring it into QLD.
|
Bi-yearly inspections would be good.
Only thing this means would be marking rego in my calendar instead of looking at the sticker. |
For me the interesting thing is that it sounds like we'll now have a state-wide tracking system for cars based on numberplates Pretty sure police can already do this, I've had a cop car following me pull up beside me at lights and ask about my license (cos I was still on a Victorian license, so when they ran my plate it looked like I had no license I guess), and they already knew all my rego details and everything by that point. |
I miss the old rego stickers as they would remind me that i have rego coming up so i better start putting some money away. I think a lot of ppl might get caught out and forget to rego their cars. Which means more fine revenue for the state gov.
As far as the cameras go, I don't know about vic police cameras, but in NSW those cameras that read number plates can also scan faces and check the data base for current warrants etc. |
this story from 4 Corners covers the number plate recognition technology in NSW.
it's pretty cool, http://www.abc.net.au/iview/#/view/42577 good over all story http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/stories/2013/09/09/3842009.htm |
It's been a couple of years or longer in perth that we haven't needed them. I'm shocked that Perth did something first for once...
|
I hate rego stickers. Thanks Newman Government.

Welcome, you are citizen #8675309. Please take your license plate and proceed to the GPS implant facility.

Same thing for Vic was announced not long ago at all, they won't be requiring display of stickers or issuing stickers as of Jan 1 2014. They've moved on with technology.
ITT: "Whaaaaaa, nanny state, I like to break the law and cry about it" |
we havnt had to display rego stickers in tassie for ages.
|
the sun turned my orange one white, true story. but only half of it, the half shaded by my wiper was still orange. lol
|
we havnt had to display rego stickers in tassie for ages When you get cars that will change. |
i like the sticker based on the fact is gives you a visual warning on when the rego was due
I do find it offensive that the government comes out and makes the claim that it will save 3+ million a year public money, er isn't this like a user pays system, so it doesn't save the public s*** (how much money does it really cost to print the sticker and send out the letter?, as far as i can see they'll still need to send you letters one to say pay, and one to say paid. so what is the cost of a sticker?) the other concern i have is that the qld government doesn't have the greatest track record of handling systems, and the police and main roads have different interdependent systems and there are delays etc over nearly 15 years and call it 20-25 rego payments i've had three bills go missing (one one rego sticker) (and before infi blames labor, it was the last rego that was bill and sticker due to a error in the system) |
i like the sticker based on the fact is gives you a visual warning on when the rego was dueIsn't the letter in the mail telling you your registration is due kinda visual as well? |
Isn't the letter in the mail telling you your registration is due kinda visual as well? Was gonna say, I don't even bother looking at my rego due to getting a letter about month before its due saying "hey, pay up soon!" |
And if you don't get the letter? It's happened to me before.
|
Took a forward thinking government to bring it into QLD. they just had to sack 10000 people first. |
Isn't the letter in the mail telling you your registration is due kinda visual as well? yes and no, that letter (as stated by me, and others) doesn't always come, also for low budget families, that letter might not always come with enough warning to budget for a full years worth of rego that they might have been doing in the past end of the day, as a percentage of the total cost of your rego payment, it doesn't even come close to a full 1 percent of the what the USER payers. |
they just had to sack 10000 people first.14000 |
This development is Hoggy approved, hate those stickers.I'm not especially concerned about the welfare of those too simple to manage a simple 6/12 month renewal without a sticker on their car to remind them. what was so hard about the stickers??? the only hassle I even found was finding a suitable spot to legally mount it on the bike, and still have it (the bike) good, (stupid backward state, in the NT for years they had the smaller form number plate and a spot for the rego sticker, ALL ON THE NUMBER PLATE, it was smart and simple |
couldn't the 1-2% who need stickers to remind them just make their own. stick a bit of tape on their window that says 'rego due in X month"?
|
Ok, if you're not capable of remembering or marking down on a calender when to pay your rego, I don't want you on my road. You're probably the kind of person who texts while driving because you're too stupid to forget that it's illegal.
Seriously people, you have paper calenders, post it notes, PDA's, smart phones, computers, email, online reminders, F*****G WRITE IT DOWN. You b**** and moan about it becoming a nanny state, well when you get numpties b****ing that they need their hand held JUST TO PAY THE CAR REGO, is it any wonder? We NEED to become a nanny state just to take care of you retards. |

We NEED to become a nanny state just to take care of you retards. the stickers are good for the following people to aid them in not breaking the law lease cars, company cars, rental cars, or any other scheme where the drivers pay money and someone else handles the whole system, cause while people/companies that manage larger fleets can make the mistake, and currently it is the driver of those cars that is at fault (because that is the way the law is, it is illegal to drive a car that isn't rego'd) i know there is a data base that you'll be able to check, but how easy (going to be harder than looking at a sticker) how quick, and how accessible is it going to be, and if someone else is managing your car and it is all done with out your input you might not even know that you were breaking the law (and worse still should you hit someone, ALL the liability is the drivers, not the company managing the car) and as a little side, while there has been all this talk about not shipping out the stickers are they changing the road laws in relation to them?, surely it will no longer be an offence to not display them, but will it be an offence to display old/out-of-date stickers? will there also be an amendment to the rules regarding drivers (not owners) |
This is awesome news. I have like 10 rego's(20 if I pay only 6 months) and I always miss one and I always get pulled up on it. Luckily I have never been fined but warned several times. This actually only happened last week.
|
In Holland car rego reminders come in from the tax office ... so technically its not the road authority you pay but the tax office. Theres no stickers involved either, every quarter a letter comes in saying you need to pay your bills. The sticker rego reminds me of the outdated vote collection system thats all manual :/
