Maybe this is old but I hadn't heard it ; just got this info in a random newsletter from the state government:

. Rego stickers will start to be phased out next October, saving motorists time and effort, and taxpayers around $3.5 million a year.
. Unregistered vehicles will be detected using number plate recognition rather than requiring a sticker on windscreens.
. Stickerless regos will apply to all vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes, which account for about 96 per cent, or 4.4 million, of vehicles registered in Queensland.
. People will still be notified through the mail when their registration is due, and will be able to check the registration status of their vehicle online or by calling the Transport and Main Roads call centre.

For me the interesting thing is that it sounds like we'll now have a state-wide tracking system for cars based on numberplates (..if we don't already?) but there's not a lot of info about that part of it.

NSW started doing the same thing this year in relation to no rego stickers anymore. The bad thing is, I've already driven one of my cars for a month and it was out of rego. I didn't get the renewal letter and nothing else really reminds you.

The automated numberplate tracking is on most NSW highway patrol cars as standard now, while every car can check your details manually. You can tell if your HWP cars have this tech by looking for these:

Pretty sure police can already do this, I've had a cop car following me pull up beside me at lights and ask about my license (cos I was still on a Victorian license, so when they ran my plate it looked like I had no license I guess), and they already knew all my rego details and everything by that point.

the only hassle I even found was finding a suitable spot to legally mount it on the bike, and still have it (the bike) good, (stupid backward state, in the NT for years they had the smaller form number plate and a spot for the rego sticker, ALL ON THE NUMBER PLATE, it was smart and simple

the stickers are good for the following people to aid them in not breaking the law

lease cars, company cars, rental cars, or any other scheme where the drivers pay money and someone else handles the whole system, cause while people/companies that manage larger fleets can make the mistake, and currently it is the driver of those cars that is at fault (because that is the way the law is, it is illegal to drive a car that isn't rego'd) i know there is a data base that you'll be able to check, but how easy (going to be harder than looking at a sticker) how quick, and how accessible is it going to be, and if someone else is managing your car and it is all done with out your input you might not even know that you were breaking the law (and worse still should you hit someone, ALL the liability is the drivers, not the company managing the car)

and as a little side, while there has been all this talk about not shipping out the stickers are they changing the road laws in relation to them?, surely it will no longer be an offence to not display them, but will it be an offence to display old/out-of-date stickers? will there also be an amendment to the rules regarding drivers (not owners)

In Holland car rego reminders come in from the tax office ... so technically its not the road authority you pay but the tax office. Theres no stickers involved either, every quarter a letter comes in saying you need to pay your bills. The sticker rego reminds me of the outdated vote collection system thats all manual :/
