good news for north brisbane people, Costco will be building a new store next to westfield northlake :)

i totes get it that people on the northside need a store like costco, due to their lower average family incomes, but a part of me is outraged that its on the northside and not on the southside.

We have started going to Costco this year. It seems pretty good to me.

So much of woolies and Coles is their own brands these days that I don't mind trying the brands in Costco that I don't know. It feels that I'm still spending about the same each month on groceries, so much less of it goes to w&c, and because I'm buying things in larger quantities things aren't bought as often so I suspect that if we keep going to Costco once a month with a little weekly at w&c the monthly $ spend will decline

A guy on ozbargain did a representative shop at all three and Costco was roughly 15% cheaper by price/quantity but your spend was greater

They are big in America. They make their money through the annual membership. It sells pretty much everything but in bulk. From brand names you know to their own home brands, plus 'homeware' stuff like play equipment, select seasonal clothing, cameras, TVs, laptops, even quality diamond rings.

As an example that stood out to me from this past weekend, Woolworths has Uncle Toby's Yoghurt topper bars. They have it in an "18bars value pack only at woolworths" for $9.20

From costco we go one box of Uncle Toby's Yoghurt topper bars for $12.99, which contains 36 bars - 3x12 Pack. These were not on special, that's just the price they sell them for. It is way more muesli bars than we'll need for the kids' lunch in the next few weeks, but the savings is huge.

They also have a decent grog section, but you have to watch the prices, since bottles are 1-1.5L not 750ml.

Back in the day i used to live on devondale milk. Whenever it was half price id buy half a dozen 6 pack cartons or so that would last me a few months. I do the same for canned fish, canned baked beans, coconut cream etc. As long as my average intake doesnt change, it saves a good amount in the long run as long as i can manage the up front costs.

Also just got 12x 4kg tubs of protein powder cause the supplier was doing 4kg for the price of 3kg cause they ran out of 3kg tubs. Epic savings.

Costco is the tits pyjamas - they have it down here in Melbourne, and we go about once every three or four weeks for a big grocery shop. We get lots of tuna, wild alaskan salmon, salsa, nuts, and other bits and pieces. Save about $200.

The tricky thing is getting food that you think might be good and it's not and/or s*** that won't keep. Shop with your head and you wont end up having to tough out 3 litres of raspberry yoghurt before a deadline.

Costco isn't a replacement for Woolies or Coles. The are a 'bulk' purchase type specialist.

They do have some bargains on general goods, but for the most part it's only a bargain per unit because of it's bulk scale.

Spook, I wouldn't be too worried about it being far away, because of the scale of the purchases, it strikes me that unless you have a family of 8-10 you'll ge shopping there at a maximum of quarterly anyway.

Memberships:
Yep, it's $60 per annum. This (combined with my lack of needing to buy toilet paper by the hundreds) is reason enough for me to let my membership lapse. I live in a 2BR Apartment, and I just can't store what I've purchased so I'm out.
The idea behind the 'two membership cards' is that you both need to 'live at the same address'.

The benefit to their membership system is that they offer a 'lifetime warranty' on items purchased from them. So buy a TV [which regularly pop up on OzBargain as an awesome price nationally] and hang onto it for 7-8 years, if it dies, take your membership and the TV back, bingo 'replace' it.
The downside to that is that this would all obviously be tracked by them, so people 'abusing' this system can have their membership refunded and are no longer eligible to sign up.

Be patient when you first go shopping there, as not only the shopping is in bulk (The queue's at the checkouts don't move quickly as everyone is buying tonnes of items) and take a trailer or ute if you expect to 'spend big' as it is easy to fill any normal car with even a 'small purchase' from Costco

Short Version:
There are some compelling reasons to become a member, and there are some 'price per unit' bargains to be had there daily.
These items usually come in such a large quantity however, that unless you're buying for 4-6 people, you're buying so much product that it'll potentially expire before you can consume it.

When they set up shop down here afew years back i was pff theres no way ill be paying 50 dollars just for getting in and to get a stupid card ....i went with a friend and i was like f*** give me a f*****g card! never again i have bought toilet paper lol

What do they have in the hot sauce department? I'd buy up big if they had the big 2L bottles of various hot sauces available.

Costco is awesome in the US, it will be good to shake up the grocery duopoly over here.
