Hi car nerds,

I have some old (~10 years) bottles of mystery car goop in varying sizes (up to 4L I think). I've read that after this long they might have degraded so are no longer effective at their purpose.

I have no use for these whatsoever and want to get rid of them but am reluctant to throw them out as I assume they are all chemically and stuff. Some of them make mention of safe disposal after use, which I assume means you should dispose of it safely before use as well.

Any advice appreciated.

i used my old car oil as weed killer worked like a champ. If you dont want to do that there are bins for it at the local tip

another option is take it to a friendly mechanic (maybe where you get your car serviced?) and they can dispose of it with the rest of their stuff. I did this with a bunch of oils and coolant and they just took it for free.

oh yeah and no way should you use something random that's been sitting around for 10 years in your car.

When i was an apprentice we had this isuzu ute which hadn't been serviced in years. When one of the other apprentices went to service it, no fluid came out after dropping the sump plug.

Even after putting in fresh oil and the rest sounded exactly as crap as it always did but eh, it was 15 years old and still running without having oil probably for 5 of those!

Not something i recommend but i wouldn't ever check oil ever 2 weeks. Maybe every 2 months. The sump is there to give you plenty of buffer and if your car isn't dripping on the floor, or burning it out the back of the exhaust, then you know it can't have gone too far.

Of course im running a new car so i don't care, 100 dollar max service cost, warranty to last my ownership of it.

Edit: sorry i think you can probably dispose of some fluids at autobahn or repco sometimes. Usually better would be just to give it to a local mechanic though.

They are from my old broken ass car where they were required regularly to keep it mobile!
