Yeah I remember not being clear who poisoned him, I'm actually not clear on who was behind a lot of the intrigue, it seems like it was all mostly Littlefinger!

Also, great reads:

Much like what happened when I watched season 1.

I hadn't read the books then, so it came as a shock. Was over so quickly I was like "uhh, wha?" and I let loose a single manly tear.

But I've since read the books (got a kindle for my b-day) and I think there are going to be a LOT of people freaking out over the red wedding.

I was in shock after reading it myself for a good few minutes, like "HOLY S***!".

I reckon the Wedding will get a good chunk of an episode, its too pivotal.

There was a LOT of lead-up, he spent over an episode in the cell, and how long was the execution scene itself? I don't think it would be possible to spend more time on it, unlike a bloody wedding battlescene..

You can't very well take the point of execution and turn it into a full episode.

Even if they do a lot of lead up to the red wedding, I hope the deaths themselves still happen fast, cos that was probably the bit that really made me go WHAT THE F*** DID I JUST READ in the book. Like, s*** has got bad, and they're at a stalemate and you're thinking "Wow, Robb is pretty f***ed" and then suddenly within a paragraph or two Umber is dead, Robb is dead, and then Catelyn is dead. That gutted me, I had to put the book down and come back to it a few days later after that chapter, so I hope its still like that in the show, where you're thinking "Wow, those f*****g freys, robb is in the s*** now" and the episode is about to end so you think thats as bad as its going to get, then BAM, dead, and it ends. And then the internet screams out in rage.

Have a look at the Game of Thrones facebook page, look at the photos of the actor that plays Robb Stark, everyone on there is like 'LOL K HE DIES' and the next person is 'OMG WTF' haha some funny reads.

Joff will die season 4 as it will set the scene for season 4 with Sansa, Tyrion on the run.

Robb Stark needs to just have his head cut off clean in the TV series, then the next frame with a wolf on this head so the general public who failed to l2read in school go WTF did I just watch, ditch the TV series and let the writers concentrate on the hardcore book readers

Correct me if I'm wrong but after the red wedding there's a chapter or so of Tywin's involvement covering how the song was made because he's a f*****g psycho and killed every living member of House Reyn? Pretry sure that the Freys got the nod from Tywin to execute them all.

Might be a flashback story or something, the song is basically all about don't f*** with the lannisters so maybe the series will end with a holy f*****g s*** aftermath episode

Not really, theres a fair bit with him and his brotherhood without banners, and when he duels the hound and stuff. And they need to do all that to set up the ressurecting anyway. And if it ends with them ressurecting her, then they'll either have a season without her and everyone will be going "So whats happening with Catelyn?" or they'll start mixing later books into the second half of the third book which sounds like it'd just start making things really mess I dunno, maybe they will, just seems like it wouldn't work so well to me, but then I'm not the one writing the show :P

I kinda like how in the books there was a decent chunk of time between when you see Dondarrion and Thoros of Myr and the brotherhood, and then when you see them again once zombie Catelyn has taken over and Thoros is all gaunt and f***ed up and everything has gone really dark and to s***. I dunno if it'd be as good if those two things were back to back.

I thought she showed up rezzed in the epilogue of the third book?

Admitedly its been a few years since I read it, but I thought the 3rd book just finished with them recovering a body out of the river, and the reveal at the end was that it was Catelyns body. Then its not till you see Thoros again (in book 4? or 5? I dunno anymore) and you find out Dondarrion sacrificed himself to rez her, even though Thoros warned him it wouldn't be enough to rez her properly.

+1 Catelyn being a cliffhanger

They will need to show the midgets jousting at the wedding, it plays a pivotal role in why Cersei accuses Tyrion of killing Joffery because he gets laughed at by Joffery and the wedding guests. This wont happen until Season 4 imo, S4 will be Tyion being hunted down by Cersei with the end of season 4 hanging cersei thrown away in that church dungeon The Sisters Something.

The book drags out a classic revenge tale to perfection. Instead of killing anyone and everyone close to Mondego, the Count of Monte Cristo carefully turns the screws until he has taken everything from the man who once took everything from him. One of the best books Ive ever read.

I think theres more text devoted to tyrion thinking about the thrum crossbow sound than the whole scene in which it happened.

Well, s*** always escalates quickly.

That'd be why the scene where it all went down was so short, compared to after, when he has actual time to think about it.

Happens that way IRL too. I mean, when I choked a b**** hooker and shot MY dad with a crossbow, it was over in seconds. But I still chuckle about it to this day.

The Homelands Program sounds like an honourable operation. This program supposedly helps itinerant Aboriginal and Island people to return to their home communities on the Cape. In the great tradition of police giving themselves awards, this program too wins obscure awards for its proponents.

Unfortunately, the Homelands Program has a more sinister purpose. Cairns police use it as an ethnic cleansing program to rid the Cairns CBD of all black people whether they live in Bungalow or Bamaga. Why?

Just another reason why ill never GO BACK to Cairns.
See, the people are nice, and there is a lot of german hotties, doesnt really sell a place to live for me.
A municipal entity that runs all its indigenous people out of town in the name of tourism is not a place i would want to live.

Must be great for real men :(

It would of been hard to not announce who is is straight away, unlike the books people will recognize him on the television, first episode is just warming up.

Think revealing Selmy like that is really the only way to do it on screen. You can't direct an episode in a single persons perspective or hide the fact Selmy is Selmy. Though a bit more of a build up besides some 5 min part would have been nice.

There's no way they were going to be able to keep it a secret. It's easy enough to do in the books, because it's all told through PoV characters, but I wasn't expecting them to hide it in the show.

Agreed about Strong Belwas though. I was pretty disappointed that he was missing. :(

I understand why they did it, just concerned about the implication to future plot lines.

If they really wanted to it could have been a secret from Dany and have the audience in on it after all.

Also heh 'game of conversations'. Plenty of action on the way in Astapor, looking forward to seeing the look on that smug c**** face when Dany stabs him in the back lol, should be some good carnage too.

I was a bit disappointed they changed the training of the unsullied too, or at least, left out the bit about them looking after a puppy and killing it. That to me for some reason seemed much more brutal than the bit about killing a baby.

I'd say probably because the whole "they kill a baby" pointed out the fact that they went through some f***ed up training, without needing to go any further. Any extra talking in that scene would have just been time wasting, imo, as the baby killing pretty much already set the whole "they're pretty f*****g brutal" idea into most viewers heads.

::EDIT:: Though maybe down the track, in passing, they will discuss the whole puppy bit as filler, maybe while Daeny is coming to grips with the whole ordeal. Maybe they will use it as a plot device to introduce the general of the unsullied (Grey Worm) to the audience?

-1 for the TV show ruining the 'Reek' storyline, I enjoyed knowing that Theon was dead/missing until you find out he is Reek which they now ruined since you see him being tortured in some scenes.

Also could Joffery be killed as a cliff hanger at the end of the season? seems to be moving fast on that plot line.

I also forgot about Ayra and the Hound scenes, s**** about to get epic!

Great ep, wife hasn't read the books and her reaction at the end was hilarious. The music after they chopped his hand off was awesome.

I have NFI what's going on with Theon. Does this mean no Theon Reek or something? Isn't he supposed to be Ramsay's prisoner until well after the red wedding? My memory of this s*** isn't 100% but wtf is going on there?

When you think about it though, they're only there for the shenanigans at harrenhal and taking his hand off.

It'd take a bunch more time to explain the group of mercs than to just say "the enemy capped him and took his hand because of hatred and Jamie being a bit of a c***". Cuts out a bunch of extra story that, while it will be missed, still wasn't important to the story as a whole beyond the hand bit.

It's the sort of thing that can be done easily with an existing enemy instead of having to introduce yet more to what some say is already a bloated cast.

When you put it like that it makes some sense if the guy that gave jamie the chop doesnt play to big of a part in the rest of the story i guess. I have read that the books do get kind out of hand with the number of characters that even the author has a hard time keeping up with them all. So trimming things down a little might make the tv a bit more managable.

They put out a PROPER release shortly after where the music was where it should have been.

If you search for it, just make sure it has 'PROPER' in the tag and have a quick squiz at the comments.

When you put it like that it makes some sense if the guy that gave jamie the chop doesnt play to big of a part in the rest of the story i guess. The amount of characters and just actual stuff to pull from makes doing 10 hour seasons difficult, so yeah, they've done a lot of trimming on the fluff.

Pretty sure everything gets "OK'd" by GRRM himself, so I wouldn't get too worried about it deviating from the books too much.

It's just stuff like Bran learning about his powers was trimmed way down and done later than in the books, because really, the days spent with the other kids learning about wargs and such in Winterfell was easily condensed down to a few minutes in video.

Also, they stuck in the whole Arya being a drink bearer to make Tywin Lannister seem a little bit human (I'd guess anyway) but it wasn't in the books. They snipped the whole Harrenhal / Arya as the "ghost of Garrenhal" and freeing of the northern prisoners because, again, that whole bit isn't really important to the whole overall story.

I mean, it was very important for the growth of Arya's character and getting to know Gendry and Hot Pie (also I'm kind of annoyed that they didn't have her cut the throat of the guard to escape) but overall I suppose it really isn't needed to progress her story.

But isn't Vargo doing the chopping important, as later on Bolton states he never ordered it and wouldn't of done it, and then free's Jamie to return to Kings Landing, Bolton then also conspires with Tywin to commit the red wedding. If it's one of Bolton's men who did the chopping, it's a bit different, though I suppose not that big a deal.

Even if it was his man who did it, doesn't mean he ordered it. He could "prove" he didn't order it by arresting the guys who did it later on to show that he was disobeyed etc.

I don't think they'll have any issue with sorting all that out. They've done a pretty good job of trimming the fat so far while keeping fairly true to the books.

I still have yet to actually watch this TV show and I feel really bad that I haven't. I'm convinced that I should read the books first, but I purchased the first one on Google store and just could not get into it, the writing was just really heavy compared to say Lord of the Rings. So, should I just watch the TV show or is it still recommended to read the books first?

I watched the first 2 seasons before reading through to book 5 (where I stopped).

I think it helps cut through the "heavy" reading with being able to put faces to some names which free's your brain up a bit for remembering all the other damn characters lol.

But once you get in and start getting excited about it, it's just as easy a read as a goosebumps book, just with a million characters.

I read the first 4 books in about a week and a half, couldn't get enough.

::Edit:: Though I suppose I could be biased re the difficulty of the read, as I would consider myself more lettered than the average Australian.

Btw did any of you notice when they first had him strung up he looked like he had put on a bit of beef during their down time between seasons. I was thinking to myself .... how the hell do you get toss into a dungeon and tortured and manage to put on weight lol.

Bloating from water boarding?

In other news, good to see Daenerys finally grew a pair, stopped whining about being the mother of dragons and started acting like the motherf*****g mother of dragons. As far as plot 'twists' go it was about as see through as grandma's undies, but it's exciting nonetheless and definitely feels like girlfriend is about to get her Unsullied on and f*** s*** up.

Prediction: Daenerys takes her nippleless army and lays waste to the Lannisters and all opposing forces south of The Wall. Then she hooks up with Rob Stark and they have a threeway with that nurse and eat grapes while they watch the Unsullied go at it with the White Walkers.

I think the moment that pretty much sums up the feel of this show for me happened lastnight when the honourable and pretty decent bloke the lord commanded copped it in the back from a lowlife scumbag. It pretty much shows that even the good people meet their end at the hands of less worthy people

I assume that he although being a great man had little choice but to fight for his mad father the king. My understnding is that when Neds dad and older brother were burned alive by the king that kicked off the civil war. So Danis older brother for all that was good about him was doomed because he simply had a prick for a dad.

If that's a saying, which would be weird enough, I don't think you are using it right. Depends are not see through.

I've only read the first book but from what I understand a big reason for the war was Raegar kidnapping Lyanna Stark for his own lust. Dunno if that's been revealed in later books but I'm pretty sure Lyanna had a kid to Raegar and my number 1 suspect at the moment is John Snow. The whole "Promise me Ned" flash backs kind of make me think that.

This is a popular theory which explains a lot of little things throughout the books. Also the actual story provided about john snows mother is lackluster at best. Also, NED being the honourable man he is. You often doubt he would lie with another woman in the first place. I cant wait for the next book, as long as George RR Martin doesn't die from a heart attack first.

Man if you are right that would be frigging huge. It's a great idea however the people it would have the greatest effect on are either dead or likely to be dead by the time it comes out. It would explain however why Ned never said s*** about Jons mother not even Robert knew. It would also explain why Ned would take the hit to his personal honour by claiming Jon as his own in order to protect him.

It does open up an interesting possibility, if and when that information was to come out would Daenerys' become aware of it (not that it would matter if her and Jon never meet) because it makes her his aunt and also makes the old blind dude at catle black Jons great uncle. This could provide a very interesting link between Daenerys' and the Starks which could result in some kick ass outcomes.

Food for thought, thanks deadlyf

Have you read the last book Taipan? Sadly I don't think Jon Snows story is as epic as that. The targarian mystery i think is already being explained in the last book where it was revealed that the baby that the mountain smashed against the wall was actually some peasants and the spider snuck the real one out and is now a man on the same path as dani but just started from a different part of the world.

There's going to be some huge s****torm when the 2 collide in the next book (hopefully) as I can't see Dani being someones b****.

i am interested in lyanna's consent... ie: did she go with raegar willingly or was she really kidnapped? because we only hear testimony from the winning side (robert & ned) it's always told as a kidnap/rape... but barriston makes out that raegar was honourable... so what's the go!? :) also.. how did she die? these are the things I think about post-episode... :P

My theory is she died due to child birth, the only mention of her dying in the first book I think is briefly about her lying in a pool of blood and begging Ned for something (which I think is to protect her child). Nothing about wounds or a killer, I think if someone had killed her it would be known.

Not sure about consent, I think it was mentioned that she had only met Robert Barathean once before everything went down so her feelings for him might not be as strong as his were for her.

One thing I was confused about - I don't think the distinction between white walkers & wights is very clear in the show.
The former are a special race of beings with the ability to reincarnate dead animals or people as the latter.

I guess so, the people who tried to kill her were different and there is Strong Belwas who is no-longer a part of the story in the series.

I've been buying the blurays when they come out so f*** 'em. Blurays are cheaper than buying them digital through Amazon as well which is one of the s*** things about the way companies sell digital products. Without taking up any shelf space there is far less incentive to put the items on sale.

Looking into it now.

Looks like:

- About $3.50 an ep. Decent.
- iTunes AU get it on Tuesday. A little late given its available for free at the dark side for Monday night viewing and there's f*** all delay for foxtel.
- iTunes DRM by the looks, so you'll need Apple hardware or iTunes to play it (can stream from iTunes on PC to an iPad or AppleTV something connected to a TV I think).

A little weak but not a bad effort. Its worth the $3.50 an ep for sure, but the broadcast delay and DRM is annoying.

Thinking about paying the $30 to support the show and then just dark siding anyway, but I don't want to support a product / model that is s***.

I'm not interested in those TV shows and the movie channels are s***. If I were to get it I would be getting the Internet TV version as I can't get Foxtel in my area but have ADSL 2 and have a Samsung smart TV.

For internet TV you get half the amount of channels for the same price in SD. I'd watch probably 4 things on Foxtel, The Daily Show on the comedy channel, Family Guy, NRL on Foxsports and GoT on Showcase which would cost a whopping $95 a month as it spans all of their s***** packages. If I got it just for GoT it'd end up costing me $150 for the season.

The only benefit of the internet version is that you aren't locked into a 12 month subscription, considering GoT only lasts 3 months it's an even suckier option.

My experiences with iTunes:

- Albums cost $10 more than the US store
- Randomly loses entire albums of music
- Needs to be ripped to other formats to work outside of iTunes, doesn't like to be shared with other devices
- Apple ID keeps losing my password. I'll set it and within a week, it will stop working and I'll need to make another UNIQUE password (I've literally gone through about 50 variations on a password so I can remember it).
- Chances are it'd probably ask me to upgrade iTunes again to support the content, which will make my media keys stop working with it again

I should have prefaced my comment with "If they allow me to buy on a per episode basis and let me watch it when I want, on whatever I want and it's not much more hassle than clicking "download torrent file" and then watching it via streaming".

I trust iTunes about as much as I trust the Iraq government to handle an election.

Well yeah, if you only get Foxtel for GoT then it's $$ but there's also Mad Men, The Borgias, Spartacus, Veep, The Newsroom & a buttload of movie channels.

Yeah, last time I tried foxtel they were offering a $25/month plan (or something like that) over 24 months. The minimum cost even added up to 25 * 24 on the ad and there was no mention of extra costs or anything. Just a low cost per month through the contract for a basic plan + a free extra channel (movie / sport / sci-fi I think).

So after the first month where I paid what I was expecting, I got a $95 bill for the second one. Apparently the guy who sold me the service "misunderstood" what I meant when I asked if it was $25 a month for the entire 24 months. Apparently he signed me up for a $25 for the first month, then $95 from there-on in, which I was never told about, despite asking.

Then when I moved, they wanted another $250 to move the service (despite having everything already installed) and I told them to go f*** themselves. I don't trust foxtel as far as I can throw them.

Heh, don't get me started with Foxtel salesmen. I had a call just now with one, turns out Austar got pacman'd by Foxtel. We're at end of internet contract and I CBF with torrents and s*** and can get a cheaper internet bundle without DLing as much media - its starting to look like going legit might work for us for not much extra cost which is pretty cool.

Anyway, so I told him I was just looking to see what they could offer, we went through the whole f***en process and he offers me a pretty good deal, no install fee (already have dish + points anyway) low contract term, 2 HD boxes, low rate etc. I tell him it sounds good and I'll talk it over with the wife.

Foxtel Guy: "Can we conference call her in?"
Hog: "No, she's at work."

"I can only offer you this deal if we close it now on the phone."
"OK, well that's cool, thanks anyway, at least I know what sort of service you can offer."
"Yeh ... well we only offer deals for the first time you call."
"That doesn't sound like a very good business plan."

And then somehow the c*** says to me "I guess I really need to be speaking to your wife, not you?"

* blink, consider hanging up *

"You're telling me that after a 15 minute sales call you can't give me 24 hours to consider the offer?"
"I'd have to make a special arrangement with my supervisor"
"You do that."
"OK great, so I'll catch up with you on Monday, same time?"

Gave him a bit of an ear bash about how the pressure sell won't work on me. The who-wears-the-pants bit was kind of cute. Did he think he could piss me off into signing up or something? Who the f*** signs up to s*** like Foxtel contracts without at least discussing it with their SO?

Good episode tonight, nice seeing Cercei get a blast from her old man after looking so smug about his plans for Tyrion and Sansa. It was also interesting to see the red priest do his thing if for no other reason but to see how they were going to do it in the show.

I had no idea Stanis had a daughter, how f***ed up is this guy? His missus keeps her stillborn(?) babies in jars and her slightly disfigured daughter locked up.

In the Clash of Kings prologue I believe Stannis' daughter is introduced before Stannis himself so you always know he has a daughter and a wife. Not sure how much they affect the story though, Stannis is always seen with his red b**** in the series so anyone could be forgiven for not knowing they exist.

Anyone spending a bit too much time at Dragonstone always seems to go a little bats*** insane, it must be the island.

Pretty sure they only make passing mention of having a wife, but again, no mention of the daughter iirc. (I mean in the series)

I do no that the fact that his wife hasn't delivered him any sons, is sick and disgusts him are all mentioned in that same scene though.

Though again, I don't think the family plays much into the actual story, which is why they glossed over it and only made mention of the wife to justify his lust for a son with Hottie McRederson. That and the fact that she's hot.

I don't think he kept them in cells (Unless that's something in the latest episode, havn't watched it yet).

From what I remember from the short conversation about the family, the wife was sick and "locked away in a tower" but I don't think she meant literally locked up, but rather in bed / her room a lot of the time.

But it would be an easy way to skip introducing the wife and all of the back-room politics regarding her guards etc.

"Let's make her sick and keep her in the tower and just skip that entire sub-plot"

"Sure, less writing for me!"

Yeh, in the books though the Wedding was an invitation from the Freys to smooth s*** over (after conspiring with the Lannisters). His motivations make a lot more sense, but still suffers from the Stark blind spot pretty badly:

- S*** mum, need to cross the bridge! We're men of the North, we totes can't build barges and s***.
- I got this robby lol.
- I HAVE TO MARRY WHAT?!
- OK war going well, Im so tap that ass, we got this anyway. Note to self: make it up to Walder.
- F***, you killed the little boys Karstark! OMG I didn't see the betrayal coming!
- Son of my father I'll try to uphold the law above all I guess. Dad would so get this, gotta execute him all by myself. F***, necks are tough. Sorry dude!
- Oh s***, yeh the Karstarks all left. OMG I didn't see the betrayal coming!
- Walder wants to make up? OK cool, we're safe with guestright, right? Guys?

the trouble with the Starks is they are honourable men not politicians. I don't say that to be negative about politicians but a polly would understand that sometimes you have no choice but to play the grey areas even if it goes slight against your high moral standards. Keeping Karstark alive for the purpose of trying to win the war would of been acceptable imho when it comes to compromising my personal values because the greater goal is far more important.

Interestingly one of the guys seen as one of the most unhonourable men in the kingdom Jamie Lanister sacrificed his personal honour for the greater good when he killed the mad king and his pyromancer in order to save the common people of kings landing. So he pretty much sacrificed himself for the greater good which is something usually people would see as being an honourable thing to do. I have never disliked Jamie, sure there are aspects of his personality that aren't to good but I really have to wonder if they are his fault. I find for a guy that can be quite arrogant he is actually more often than not just blunt about the truth.

I guess thats the big draw for me with this show the characters for the most part aren't clear cut. Everyone of the characters to some degree is flawed and it's just perception for the most as to wheather they have any redeeming qualities.

I agree, they even managed to make Tywin look like he's from the same race as the rest of the cast.

He basically comes off like a stone cold a****** in the books, but the scenes with Arya as his cup-wench did rather well at softening his character and helping understand his side of the ordeal.

And even the "heroes" having major faults makes the show that much more believable.

The bath scene in this episode was really well done in flushing out Jamie's softer side, I was wondering how they were going to do that.

Wonder how they will tell Littlefingers backstory because if anyone remembers, he was basically the mastermind behind EVERYTHING. Funnily, I can't remember what exactly he did but I do remember reading it and coming to the conclusion it's all his fault.

They're kind of giving that impression by having him showing up and looking devious in every other scene. Like after the tyrell's agree to leave after the whole ghost baby assassination s***.

Margery says "I don't want to be a queen, I want to be THE queen" and littlefinger grins deviously.

I'm guessing they will go more into it further into the story after he's married / killed off psycho-b**** Lysa Tully. Probably some s-exposition for the slow folk.

There are lots of tip-offs and "ah-hah!" moments) for the acute viewer that are subtle, but there if you look. It's just that sadly a lot of the audience are 15 year olds who are there for tits and be-headings so most of the subtleties go way over their heads (Trust me, I'm having to explain everything to my 16 y/o sis and her friends).

Totally

Yeah, they didn't mention the knife in the series too much beyond the whole "Yes, it's mine... I lost it to Tyrion".

In the book you find out somewhere through all of it that he was behind the assassination and so essentially was the one who started the war between the Starks and Lannisters (Forcing Tyrion's capture because they thought he pushed Bran).

As for Jon Arryn, If I recall correctly, it was Lysa, at the whim of Littlefinger, yeah.

Yeah, Littlefinger's knife, lost to Tyrion in a wager, stolen by Joffrey at Winterfell and handed to an assassin to put Bran out of his misery because he overhears King Robert say that would be the kinder thing to do. Tyrion confronts him later at his royal wedding about it IIRC.

Didnt they post a list of episode titles where episode 8 was mysteriously unnamed?

The battle of castle black is book 3, yes/no? If so, they've still got a lot of ground left to cover in the next 5 eps.

edit - never mind, its been named as "Second Sons". If I had to guess, I would say Ep 9 - The Rains of Castamere, would be a likely contender for the red wedding, although that would make for an awfully anti climactic finale.

Finale predictions - Joff dies, Jon becomes Lord Commander, Dani gets her city.

I used to get really pissed whenever they would diverge from the books, but its growing on me. It's much more fun watching the show without being sure what's going to happen next.

I don't think the castle black battle will be in this season, too much ground to cover isn't there? Cos jon has to climb the wall, then they wander around a bit beyond the wall for a bit, before he betrays them and makes his way back the nights watch, then they're all suspicious of him and think hes a traitor and hes gotta convince them and prepare all the defenses and s*** before the battle happens. I can't remember if he becomes lord commander before or after the battle, but still seems like way too much ground to cover. I could see him climbing the wall and then betraying the wildlings and going back to castle black and being arrested as a traitor and having that as his cliffhanger.

Oh and in an interview didn't the producers/writers say this season doesn't have a big battle like last season did anyway?

Nah it sped up rather quickly towards the end of season 2 as well. It would have to be episode 6 or at the very least the next one, the other episodes have more going on in them and all the pieces are almost into position for the raid on Castle Black. 'The Climb' refers to wildlings scaling the wall before attacking.

Second Sons would be the royal wedding, Rains of Castamere would be the red wedding and the final episode looks like the attack on Meereen.

Well 35 minutes in and they have just laid out the first hints of the red wedding, 2 weeks in the show so I imagine within the next 2 episodes.

As each episode goes by I find Margaery Tyrells grandmother to be more and more awesome and tonight is no exception. This old girl is unshakable and sharp as a tack, she made a comment about her grandson being a sword swallower through and through that damn near had me blowing coke out my nose. :)

Theon ain't moving for a long time. I found it quite hard watching the finger flaying, I guess that's normal? I think the actor is playing Ramsay Bolton quite well, the right amount of crazy.

Did Thoros and Milesandre ever meet up in the books? I don't remember that. I suppose they've got her taking Gendry to save introducing Edric Storm. I'm not sure if that means that Gendry isn't going to have a major role in the remaining books if the show is allowed to change his story that much.

In the book, the marriage was originally proposed between Sansa and another Tyrell whose name escapes me atm.

He was crippled but he was apparently a nice guy and it was more a "let's get her out of the city asap" type deal.

iirc roz was not in the books at all.. she is a collection of different whore characters from the books made into a single character.
my memory of how it goes for sansa in the books was initially she is led to believe she is going to marry loras, just to get her on highgarden's side, then gets promised to the cripple tyrell, but is forced to marry tyrion before joffrey's wedding.

He literally says he's lying about that before a little more torture. Its Ramsay.

A couple of people I know getting a bit zzZZzzz at the last few ep's pace, my brother is all 'lol medieval home and away' and (i f*****g s*** you not) complaining about boring weddings on the way :D

I loved the conversation between the Old Tyrell and Tywin, after Theon guesses 'Bolton' is a Karstark he goes along with it for a minute then says "Oh I am lying" and finishes cutting his finger off, that scene was definitely gut wrenching it just looked painful.

Next weeks episode is directed or written with GRRM
"The Bear and the Maiden Fair" Michelle MacLaren George R. R. Martin May 12, 2013"
Could something major happen in this episode? It's the only one with his name attached, Rob Stark has only a single destination left...

Joffery hasn't really come off as much of a little s*** in this season.

The next episode is where Roose Bolton throws Brienne into the bear pit. Should be awesome. :D

I'm not particularly upset about 'major' stuff not happening, it's a big foreboding build up in all of the storylines.
I can understand if dialogue scenes aren't most people's thing, however they're quite well done. There's a real sense of which characters are oblivious, which ones are getting a bead on the others and which ones know and hate each other & power struggles shifting constantly, etc. Also, when you're balancing so many characters the weekly advancement usually isn't measured in strides, it's measured in inches.

Well the books are kinda like that, you read 300 pages at snails pace then all of a sudden you have to reread a chapter because 10 main characters were just killed off or captured.

I thought Jon Snow and Ygritte were going to hump each others brains out when they got to the top of the wall.
The big zoom out shot at the end was great but it bugged me that one minute Tormund and Gareth Keenan were there and then they just disappeared. :/

They're really showing off how much of a maniac Littlefinger is in this episode. More so than the book, you don't even get that he's such an anarchist even in the latest books when he kills Lysa Arryn, but that climbing the ladder in chaos monologue really drove it home.

definitely hasn't been enough ygritte humpin' action. there was heaps in the books... it's the only time jon snow catches a break! hehe. i'm a bit bummed they have left out the whole bit about jon snow being a skin changer.. n that being a major reason he was accepted by mance. i am assuming they will bung it in later when alistair sends jon snow back out to mance.

The bear and the maiden fair sounds a lot like Brienne in the bear pit, as others have stated.

And I think the red wedding will be the ep "The rains of Castamere", as that's the song they play to signal the start of the attacks when everyone is slaughtered.

Speaking of which, I hope Cat gets to cut the throat of Jinglebell (The halfwit Frey) before hers gets done. I remember thinking Cat was finally badass for a short moment before being snuffed out.

I also hope they show the wolf-head sewn onto Robb's body, mostly because I just want to see my sister cringe and go "WTF!?!?". I got a chuckle out of seeing her cringe during the finger scene last ep XD

edgy. tell me more about your contrary opinions on things that are really good.

yes, I was definitely only expressing this opinion to create controversy...

I've been pretty critical in the past of people not liking series or movies due to a lack of explosions and bright lights so I'm not simply craving more sword fights and magic tricks. Maybe it was inevitable but I don't have to pick my jaw up off the floor after every episode like I used to.

the acting and production is still completely fantastic and I love watching life go by in this alternate universe. however, compared to the first two seasons where so much s*** happened episode to episode the pace has undeniably changed. I even wouldn't be surprised if they're deliberately doing it to create effect for when things really go off.

yor rong, dummy. much more edgy.

Did Thoros and Milesandre ever meet up in the books? I don't remember that. I suppose they've got her taking Gendry to save introducing Edric Storm. I'm not sure if that means that Gendry isn't going to have a major role in the remaining books if the show is allowed to change his story that much.

Daenerys was my sister's fav char from the start (along with Arya and just starting to get keen on Jamie) so I was heaps excited for her to catch up to Season 3 when she actually starts to pick up as a character.

As for the "big episode" (assuming you're talking red-wedding big) I'm fairly sure they will just put all that on hold until the later episodes (I think it was ep 9?) and focus on more pressing storylines such as Arya + the Hound, Jamie getting to kings landing and the wildlings f*****g about over the wall.

Man that bear thing was pretty lame. For one, wtf is up with those deep wounds on her neck that didn't bleed? If I get a scratch I bleed out, deep gouges like those would surely have a decent amount of claret coming out.

I was expecting an epic confrontation yet it seemed really wooden (pun!) and almost mundane. I'm guessing because it was a real bear and stunman that did it but it reminded me of those old cowboy movies where one cowboy just stands there not doing anything waiting for the super telegraphed punch by John Wayne, aka Pit Bear.

A pretty dull episode. There were some funny conversations, but it seemed to consist mostly of setups for the next few weeks.

That bear pit was really disappointing, I remembered it being more epic in the book, but probably because I was surprised at Jamie.

Looks like they're getting the most out of Robb's Queen (I still dont know her name...) before she heads out to nuncle's wedding.

Anyone else notice that Jamie and Bran seemed to be in pretty much the same spot at one point?

I realise they have a limited amount of locations to shoot from but you'd think they'd mix it up so that when they film someone who is meant to be in the North versus someone in the middle of the country it'd be different locales or at least use angles which don't show the slopes of the same mountain.

Especially since one scene followed the other.

Haha, yeah that scene was awesome, Charles Dance owned it.
Joffrey goes "Waahhh, I may have to walk up the Tower of the Hand stairs", so Tywin walks up 6 steps to both show him it's not so f*****g hard and shifts the whole power dynamic of the scene.

Well the c***-leeches were in the last ep, but the knife was in ep 7 (I think?) after he had the two slutty (ok, sexy...) women release Theon and sex him up.

Ramsay pulled out a nasty looking knife with a junk-cutting hook on its blade and talked about how Theon's c*** was his favourite bit and threatened to cut it off etc.

The wold head thing happening in the same book would be irrelevant since the detail was given in the 4th book but still happened the day of the wedding. I hope they show Catelyn being dumped in the river for Beric to find later.

What teenagers need these days is a bloody good dose of trench warfare. Then we'll see who's crying cos Rob Stark copped an arrow in the back. If Charlie Chapiln had have died like Oogly Chaplin the boys would have kept right on fighting the Hun without so much as a beg your pardon, make no mistake about it.

I am guessing we may see lady stark get tossed in the rive early in the next episode. What i am wondering though is if she will be found before the end of the season since it would be a good final scene having her eyes open up in the last second of the season leaving everyone to wonder wtf happens now for the next 12 months

Was a good recreation I thought. I felt the book had more happening in it though, but am still impressed how it was done. Particularly with the Queenie, wasn't sure what they were going to do there. The slicing of Catelyn's throat was a good way to the end the episode.

Here is a question for you all. If karma was to catch up with that motherf***** Bolton what should it be? I only ask because i cant imagine anyway of him being f***ed no matter how horrible that would fully pay that prick back.

I am going to take a guess that he will meet his fate at the hands of the Lannisters at some point because you know as they say, when you swim with sharks blah blah blah.

I have to give credit to this story because even when you know whats coming it doesnt lessen the blow much and you have to love that.

I loved that they included the bit about how he chose a fat wife to get all the money, that was one of my favourite little character bits in the books.

And even though I guess the Red Wedding in the books seemed to have more going on, cos you knew the names of the other characters and people with Robb Stark who were also getting killed, in some ways the show version felt even more brutal, mostly I think cos of his wife getting stabbed in the baby. That was so casually brutal, the way the guy comes up and just has a bit of a leisurely stabby stab, like hes carving a piece of meat.

Probably next season, at the very least the Red Viper will show up next season to fight at Tyrion's trial, so they might mix a bit of book 4 and have some more dornish stuff to give backing to that.

Isn't this always the case though? I swear every movie I watch where one of the main bad guys is a right royal f*****g a****** they never ever torture the f***** enough when he meets his inevitable end, I swear it s**** me to tears. This little prick should be tossed out of the palace for all the world to see then beaten until he begs and cries so all can see what a b**** he is. I want those around him and his subjects to be under no illusion as to how cowardly lowly and generally f***ed up he is and I want it to last a good long while. More importantly I want him to know that he has been outted in front of everyone for being exactly what he is.

So totally true mate. This also probably has a lot to do with why we keep getting more or less nothing but recycled s*** and sequels out of Hollywood. Because no one has the balls enough to really test their audience and lacking that they don't have the imagination to come up with anything new, its f*****g sad.

I have a couple of questions about lastnights episode.

1) Am I correct in my understanding that Talisa wasn't at the wedding in the books? If so what happened to her and what purpose could it have served to change this?

2) Did Robs uncle get killed aswell because last I saw of him he was heading for a tree for a piss? If he did manage to dodge this bullet I find it just a little odd and incredibly good timing on his bladders behalf.

Also I'd just like to add that it wouldn't matter to me which bad guy or even if all of them got killed in retribution for last night it wouldn't make up for the loss. Perhaps that's just me, I don't know

well hopefully now some hollywood execs might get the idea that the audience will accept* storylines that don't follow their checklists :)

* ... mostly.

my own memory of what happens to talisa is a bit vague... in the books she wasn't from volantis.. she was from a minor westeros house that was bannered to the lannisters. i can't remember what happens to her in the books :/

robb's uncle (the blackfish) escapes the red wedding & goes back to tully lands iirc. edmure is held captive by the freys.

Taipan, demon - you should check out this 'state of cinema' address by Steven Soderbergh, bit of a long read but it's all about Hollywood and it's recycled s***. http://www.deadline.com/2013/04/steven-soderbergh-state-of-cinema-address/

The blackfish escapes the red wedding, and holes up at Riverrun before surrending to Jamie but then escaping again and remaining at large.

From memory Robb's wife didn't attend the wedding, but she gets picked up by Jamie after he takes Riverrun and sent to Casterly Rock with Edmure I think. Her and her whole family were pretty suspicious from in the book I thought, it seemed like her mother had helped plan the Red Wedding or something similar. Wasn't there something about her giving her daughter (Robbs wife) potion juice to prevent her from having a baby?

Yeah that was the joke I was (lamely) trying to make and used "Oogly" instead of Oona cos I cbf googling her name.

Not that it matters regarding the show anymore I guess, but I have been trying to work out whether Oona is super hot or she is one of those people that looks good from one angle and kinda plain from another.
Evidence: Images of Oona

I suspect that she is one of those girls that would be quite stunning IRL but in some photos looks quite different. I definitely wouldn't call her ugly, just in some photos she strikes me as incredibly beautiful whereas in others she's a bit meh.

Decided I would hit it regardless.

Thanks for listening.

1) Am I correct in my understanding that Talisa wasn't at the wedding in the books? If so what happened to her and what purpose could it have served to change this?

Talisa was a TV series character, she doesn't exist in the book. Robb's wife in print was the daughter of a lesser noble (Her name was Jeyne Westerling) whom he deflowered during his greif / her consoling him after hearing the younger kids were dead @ winterfell (and she also nursed him back from an injury). So he was stuck between leaving the maiden f***ed and alone (d*** move) or marrying her and breaking his word. He decided to keep her honour intact and married her the morning after.

Her house was pardoned and she was allowed to live in the book. I think her parents weren't too keen on the marriage or anything and might have had something to do with the betrayal as Jeyne gets given to a nobleman and the whole time they were giving her a potion to c***-block getting preggers.

2) Did Robs uncle get killed as well because last I saw of him he was heading for a tree for a piss? If he did manage to dodge this bullet I find it just a little odd and incredibly good timing on his bladders behalf.

It's been a while, but I'm reasonably sure he wasn't actually at the wedding in the book either. I think he stayed at Riverrun and he even holds out later down the line when the Lannisters siege the joint (but he escapes out into the river and is currently missing)

::EDIT:: Oops, viper beat me to an explanation, though I think mine's wordier :P

I liked the throwback to the book with the customary eating of bread when they first show up.

They don't go into the whole importance of the food supposedly giving them protection in the series, so it was nice to see that little wink wink nudge nudge.

I think they introduced it at Winterfell in Season 1, but it would have been nice as a refresher to show Robb isn't a complete blundering fool, something innocuous for Catelyn to say like - "Walder Frey can't be trusted, we need to invoke guest right immediately"

By the sounds of it I think Robs wife was done much better in the show than the books. The biggest impact of the red wedding for viewers was certainly her demise.

There are a lot of changes in the show in order to cut down on the number of characters and locations but that one particular change seemed a little bit more deliberate and I wonder if GRRM made that change himself preferring it to the more convoluted story he told in the books or if it was just clever work on behalf of one of the writers for the show.

I think they tried their best in fitting in how important it is during the initial meeting in ep 9, you could see how scrambed to shove something into their mouths like if they didnt they would die in the next minute. Whether non-readers would pick that up, eh.

Both Greatjon and Littlejon were at the wedding.

Everyone should re-read the chapter, takes a few mins, awesome read as a refresher. It was like a checklist of people getting smashed haha.

I just read something where they said she is roaming the river lands but thats all the info they had. Personally i hope to see moreof the wolves but with so many possibilities with all the characters its hard to guess where things might go and who or what they may be involved with.

I'd just like to see her eventually strolling about the countryside with her wolf f*****g a******* up and getting some payback. I just hope grrm doesnt kick the bucket before he is done because that would suck the biggest pair of balls in history.

I think they've cut down the wolves in the show as it must be hard to do?

In the books there's lots of mentions of a wolf pack, led by what's inferred to be Arrya's wolf, causing havoc.

Considering Arya was having dreams about being in Nimera's brain ala Bran with his wolf and the constant mention in passing about it, I'd imagine that GRRM is keeping the thought in the back of our heads.

It might be just so Nimeria can show up, save Arya and then be brutally murdered, or it could just be a false trail, but I think it's probably the first.

There's also a small chance that Arya manages to become a warg herself, I guess. Maybe with the return of the dragons, the descendants of the first men will be discovering they have a few interesting powers that used to exist.

But it was nice to see a few older faces and places again.

Majorly bummed that the last scene wasn't the reanimation of Catelyn. That would've really f***ed people up.

Still, the highlights would be Arya's fireside chat, and the "king of the north" (as in, yep, they actually did it). Oh, and the king being sent to bed without his supper.

Speaking of Coldhands, when I first got to him in the books I immediately thought he was the Stark uncle that got lost in the woods and never came back (i have this eternal optimism people come back in some shape...) but the more I got into it the less i thought that to be the case. What is he? Or am I not meant to know.

They did it wrong. In the books, the wolf head is sewn on, unless that happens later.

The girl also stabs samwell but he's so fat it doesn't do anything.

Also, Samwell becomes more toned and solid in the books after some actual hard training. Will the actor pull a Toby McGuire?

I think they put any fears of them shying away from anything well and truly to bed last week. Hell they even upped the stakes by slaughtering Talisa in the manner they did. lol

You know one really small thing I'd like to see. I'd like to see Tywin acknowledge Tyrions intelligence even if it's just a casual nod. As far as his kids go they are total f*****g duds with one small exception being Jamies skills as a swordsmen which of course now looks like a thing of the past. Cersei is pretty much useless and apart from having three kids does absolutely zero to further the lannister name. Tyrion on the other hand has truck loads of potential and could do more to further his families name than even Tywin could.

Somehow I don't think we'll see it though since Tywins days are numbered. Hell if it wasn't for the end of the season I'd give Tywin about 2 weeks tops lol :P

Just watched Arya go to town on that Frey soldier again, best scene in the episode for my money. Unless at some point down the track you know who kills her off her storyline feels like its heading somewhere truly epic. I have heard that the hound is thought to be dead in a future book which is a shame because the partnership he and Arya are developing is one of the highlights for me right now.

The T stands for you're an idiot. My Vulcan intelligence prohibits me from talking on your level.

Sandor is a great character. He's still running around after the Arya business. Such a great attitude towards killing and mentors Arya to some degree. Arya is going to kill everyone.

Cersei is a major player. She sets up the kingdom for a big invasion and truly destroys the lannisters.

Sansa needs to get her s*** together and stop being a pawn. I hope little fingers training makes her into a psycho political killer

I was under the assumption that he'd already kind of nodded at him when he appointed Tyrion as the treasurer. He wouldn't have given him the job if he didn't see that Tyrion was intelligent enough.

I just went back and looked through the wiki of the SOIAF books.

Clegane died in the arms of the head monk of the monastery on the quiet isle where Brienne learns of it and also that Arya was still alive.

The head monk put the dog-shaped helm on his cairne, but someone swiped it. Lots of rumours were going around about the dog raping young children and doing nasty things, but that was the guy who found the helm.

The monastery also housed the dog's warhorse, Stranger. So it's pretty damn safe to say that he's undeniably dead.

No Zombie Catelyn (book 3 epilogue)
No Eyrie Littlefinger, Sansa still in King's Landing
No Arya boat to Braavos
No wounded Clegane
No Royal Wedding and glorious death of King F*****g C***face
No Jaime Lord Commander. WTF is he doing in King's Landing yet when Joff is still alive?
No Tyrion strangling Shae and shooting Tywin for getting it on
No Tyrion trial escape
No Wildling Attack on the Wall
No Jon Snow Lord Commander of the Night's Watch

It goes on and on, looks like they are stretching it out quite a bit now? Thought season 1 and 2 were basically book 1 and 2.

Book 3 is enormous though, even before they said they were splitting it over two seasons I assumed they would, its even published as two separate parts now (well the version I got was two separate books, but you can still get it all in one).

I don't think the season was stretched out really, I mean there was lots of build up and less big battles and stuff, but I don't think theres really that much that needed to be trimmed out, certainly nowhere near enough to fit the whole of book 3 in one season. I did expect them to kill Joffrey this season, and maybe bring Catelyn back as zombie Catelyn, but I never expected the rest to happen.

I always figured that Joffrey's death would be a season 4 thing. It (and the aftermath of it) were always the big thing that happened in the second halfish of the book in the lower Westeros (so discounting the Wall and in Mereen etc.)

Made sense to make season 3 lead up to The Red Wedding and season 4 to be the Royal Wedding and its aftermath to me.

Well, sure, there's that too, but the fact that he put him in that position itself (and I think tywin even says something like "I know you can handle it") is more than just a blood thing. Tywin is not stupid, he wouldn't put him in that position if he thought Tyrion dumb.

I think he also sort of throws in a few back handed compliments after showing up at blackwater (the whole "I miss being the hand" time period).

They are going way to fast for my liking, missing way too much stuff. Most people watching only the TV show don't get Jaime Lannister at all (and how complex killing the mad king was). Certainly don't realize just how smart Tryion is (e.g. chain across blackwater). Don't get why the faceless man respected Arya (weasel soup). Aren't aware Maester Aemon (night's watch) is Targaryen, fun thought ... 3 dragons 2 Targaryens known to be alive ... what if there was a Targaryen alive for each dragon ? ... Rhaegar and Lyanna perhaps ? but then people watching the TV show don't get the complicated mess that Cersei, Rhaegar and Lyanna

Yeh I brought up the R+L=J theory in the last season's spoiler-tag infested thread I think, I reckon its rock solid.

Interesting that Martin has given the producers the synopsis of books to come, I would have thought it would be secret but available if he died, but guess they need the inside goss to plan properly or something.

Doesnt everyone in the books always remark that Stannis' flaming sword looks really fake, and that Thoros' always looks really real?

Or was it the other way round?

Haha, smoke and ham? I thought it was like smoke and snow and salt, and the snow is like Jon Snow and the smoke is cos his wounds were smoking when he got stabbed and the salt is the guy crying while he did it.

But I dunno, that seems flimsy and a bit too airy fairy and metaphorical to be GRRM's style.

haha yeah Smoke and Ham rings a bell, maybe because I am hungry. Honestly who knows my theory is that GRRM reads all the theories and then rewrites the books accordingly, hence why it's still years before the book is out.

Stannis definitly isn't azor ahai I think, they mention at length in the book how his sword was fakely set on fire during the ceremony and no real warmth emanates from it, which it's supposed to.

I think Jon Snow being azor ahai is the best theory, especially considering his Stark (First men) and Tageryan descent. Plus the red lady keeps seeing im in her fires.

At the end of the book he's stabbed and his wounds smoke, but he's by no means dead, I reckon he either survives or hes resurrected.

Only started watching Game of Thrones recently - I've just finished watching season 1.
It was going great - all these concepts which were dismissed logically, like the fact that noones actually seen a dragon and they're just stories passed down from a friend of a friend of a friend etc.
Then, suddenly dragons... wtf? :(

Also, Joffrey is about as likeable as Draco Malfoy.

Dragons were always real, they just haven't been around for hundreds of years. Thats how the Targaryens originally united the seven kingdoms, cos they had dragons. And the skulls of all their dragons are in the red keep too (its not dwelled on much in the show, but Arya finds them while shes chasing that cat and gets lost).

They weren't just stories, they talk about how the dragons were used in conquest and there are various mentions about the skulls of the great dragons in the throne room (which got moved out after the war).

Hell, even in the series, Arya hides in one of the skulls during season 1.

I have finally, after many months, caught up to Game of Thrones. I still have episode 10 of Season 3 to watch, but by god is it such an entrancing TV show. I've only ever been so invested in one other fiction and that was Harry Potter but this really hits the nail on the head. Everything just works and everything is just so well done its almost like a movie.

I have a very big feeling that after watching the Red Wedding episode (holy crap that was intense) that this will end in a fight between dragons and white walkers. Those seem to be the only plausible forces left after humans tear each other apart so easily.

Just. Wow.

Also the iron throne is Valarian steel forged in dragon's (Baelron's )fire.

People just thought they were extinct.

Also 3 dragons, assuming 1 dragon per Targaryen as is the norm in the books.
Maester Aemon
Daenerys
... and who ?

My vote is John Snow and that he is really the bastard child of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, making him Daenerys' nephew. Gives him a mix of the Dragon magic and the Children of the Forest/First men.

Maybe him and his aunt hook up for some weird family sex in book 6 or 7, shortly before Arya kills them both ...

Bran is a Warg so maybe the Stark family have magical blood? People thought the dragons were extinct because the last dragon to ever be born was a mutant. Just like how the White Walkers hadn't been seen for thousands of years, people just forget over time and use it to scare children.

I liked the last episode. While it wasn't as powerful as the Red Wedding, it was still a nice wrap up to the high drama. Daenerys is amassing a huge army, but will that be enough when half the army are slaves? Who will train them? Is she hoping to gain all of Westeros as well and just win by pure numbers?

imo That's kind of a given, they are of the first men who spent a lot of time living in and around the Children of the Forest. So the Starks are fairly close to wildings hence the tree dreams and wargs.

p.s. Not sure why Dazhel is laughing, not all Targaryens were linked to Dragons yet their bloodline seemingly lets the occasional one that pops out that can stand in fire and have Dragon buddies.

Dragons are like goldfish, they grow to fit the size of the tank. The later Targaryens were so scared by the power of the dragons that they raised them in cages and ended up with s***** small ones.

Also re: dragons, don't the Greyjoys have some horn they can blow to control them? I thought Dani had lost control of Drogon, I would guess the allegiances of the dragons are pretty flexible.

badass slaves bred purely for killing and with zero fear of death + dragons = pretty good odds imo.

I don't think the numbers are necessarily in her favour vs all the houses of westeros but she has lines of troops that would maintain discipline and hold position in the face of anything, backed up by dragons. she's going up against armies that will likely s*** themselves and break formation just at the sight of dragons. plus once she's whipped a few arses and houses find out there is a targaryan back and with dragons, they'll prolly be keen to jump on board the winning team. I haven't read the books (don't really care about spoilers, I much prefer this thread) so I'm purely speculating.

one thing I have a bit of trouble gauging from the show is the amount of time that is passing over the course of the series. is this much clearer in the books, especially from what I gather it covers the same events from multiple perspectives?

Yeah at around the same time Maester Aemon dies (ie. a Targaryen dies and a dragon goes off the reservation).

I think Tyrion killing Shae is gonna hit people really hard in the show, because they've built her up far more as a character in the show, and they've made her really nice and made people really feel sorry for her and stuff. Its going to be brutal when/if Tyrion strangles her.

I kinda wish they didn't have to kill Tywin, Charles Dance is so f*****g good in pretty much every scene hes in, I dunno who can fill that void.

Are you sure they kill Shae? I saw something about Tyrion sneaking her out of the city in the show. Bit of a cop out if so, her reveal as nothing but mercurial was quite a blow in the books. Kevin Lannister's death hit me harder then Tywins for some reason.

I think Bronn has already been bought by Tywin and he simply lied to Tyrion. They don't allude to it in the show - I am going to wager it will be revealed as one of those final betrayals.

yeah as i read i kept waiting for some reveal that Shae was actually some traveling noblewoman or something special from a far off land. More than the simple prostitute she seemed to be. It never happened ;(

and yes id say bronn (pragmatic, thoroughly amoral) was bought by Tywin (as shae was) never put shae on the ship and it will happen in the TV version as it happened in the books

and yes the whole "back from the dead thing" - with katherine stark soon headlining as "madame whispers" is interesting. How the whole balance of powers works is also very interesting as being able to raise the dead is huge. But we also have the for the fire god (lord of lights aka the dark one?) and the divination / see the future thing VS the cold people of the north and their risen dead as undead etc. How does it all relate and fit? like from below:

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ-ZDsKKj9a6oU6XCCvIewdWBWO7Ml1cffDiO5ASD7h6dHOe1ip

You know looking for over arc's in theme from the novel. Reminds me of the deathgate cycle where on one world they were using dark magic to raise the dead while on another world the fact dark magic was being used elsewhere was killing off the population and killing the world

However, as with the other worlds, the Sartan mysteriously began to die.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Death_Gate_Cycle#Pryan.2C_the_world_of_fire

not a mystery - it was the balancing of the use of death magic. So:

With all the mensch dead and Sartan magic stretched to the limit, the Sartan of Abarrach turned to the forbidden arts of necromancy, using the corpses of the dead to supplement a lost workforce. While at the start it seemed a logical (if desperate) move that would help, it proved to be the most critical and tragic mistake of the whole Sartan race, as the dead eventually escaped from Sartan control. But there was an even worse result the use of necromancy had, one far more disastrous for the Sartan: For every life brought back, every soul prevented from passing on, another life ends untimely.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Death_Gate_Cycle#Abarrach.2C_the_world_of_stone

i wonder is some such things will happen with a song of fire and ice. IT is all about fire and ice after all? life / death etc

^ yup, they better not cop out on that.. with some 'soft for tv' sneaking her out of the city.
tyrion finding her in his father's bed & it pushing him over the limit was fkn mindblowing.
I kinda wish they didn't have to kill Tywin, Charles Dance is so f*****g good in pretty much every scene hes in, I dunno who can fill that void.

bearing false witness and the betrayal of his love and obvious regard i think gives Tyrion an acceptable motive against shae. Especially as she is in his fathers bed?

Shae acted very badly whilst ned stark and many others were doing the right thing so their deaths were (should of been?) hard to take. Which is what makes this series so good - oh you were doing the right thing but still got your head chopped off??? Oh dear.

But yeah TV viewers might be a little squeamish and less forgiving of such actions in tyrion who has been portrayed as a very decent moral guy in general. what should be remembered is tyrions morality and ethics only seem good in comparison to the really really bad types around him. He is no golden boy.

They will build up his hate for his family over the next few episodes, especially with the conversations he has with Jamie in the cells, I can see the scene now he grabs the crossbow sees shae in his fathers bed who everyone knows despises whores, people will be cheering Tyrion for his actions not feel squeamis**

there's a companion book coming out in october called "The World of Ice and Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the World of Game of Thrones."

If the past is prologue, then George R. R. Martin's masterwork—the most inventive and entertaining fantasy saga of our time—warrants one hell of an introduction. At long last, it has arrived with The World of Ice and Fire.

This lavishly illustrated volume is a comprehensive history of the Seven Kingdoms, providing vividly constructed accounts of the epic battles, bitter rivalries, and daring rebellions that lead to the events of A Song of Ice and Fire and HBO's Game of Thrones. In a collaboration that's been years in the making, Martin has teamed with Elio M. García, Jr., and Linda Antonsson, the founders of the renowned fan site Westeros.org—perhaps the only people who know this world almost as well as its visionary creator.

Collected here is all the accumulated knowledge, scholarly speculation, and inherited folk tales of maesters and septons, maegi and singers. It is a chronicle which stretches from the Dawn Age to the Age of Heroes; from the Coming of the First Men to the arrival of Aegon the Conqueror; from Aegon's establishment of the Iron Throne to Robert’s Rebellion and the fall of the Mad King, Aerys II Targaryen, which has set into motion the "present-day" struggles of the Starks, Lannisters, Baratheons, and Targaryens. The definitive companion piece to George R. R. Martin's dazzlingly conceived universe, The World of Ice and Fire is indeed proof that the pen is mightier than a storm of swords.

and here's an image from the book of aegon the conqueror atop balerion the black dread

Book spoilers are off limits in the TV thread, and that's been understood from go. The real mean elitist book s*** is a joke, dorkface.

People who complain about TV content being spoiled should stay away from the f*****g thread until they are up to date! Its really not a hard thing to do and I refuse to feel sad because super stupid people read GoT threads on a Monday when they haven't watched the ep yet. F***, I know what's coming, but don't like to have TV eps spoiled and I somehow manage it just fine ... actually you are right, I do feel superior to people who are seriously stupid enough to read GoT threads on a Monday if they are trying to avoid spoliers.

I cant disagree with that its pretty simple logic. Its not like the tv show thread is a review where people give impressions of the episode without going in to any kind of depth its there to talk about what happened and you cant do that without revealing what actually took place. I dont want to sit about for half a frigging week waiting for all the slow pokes to get up to speed, its bulls***.

What's the point of even reading the TV thread if you haven't seen the latest episode? Discussing the episodes is what the threads for! It can't operate on a time-delay just for each individual person's viewing schedule, so it operates on the when the episode is aired schedule. All seems pretty logical and fair to me.

So, is tonight's episode the first example of having future book spoilers in the show? I'm referring to the scene with the white walkers, there's a few theories going around that the last dude who changed the baby is the night's king. Nobody is safe from spoilers anymore, however, I thought it was a really nice surprise.

According to legend, the Night's King lived during the Age of Heroes, not long after the Wall was complete. He was a fearless warrior, who was named the thirteenth Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Later he fell in love with a woman "with skin as white as the moon and eyes like blue stars", he chased her and loved her though "her skin was cold as ice", and when he gave his seed to her he gave his soul as well.

If you take the scene from season 1 with Bran and old nan, where she says the Nights King was also a Stark called Bran. Nights King would have been Brandon the builder.

Well I guess they need something to do with Bran, since in the books he disappears until the 5th one after going through the wall, and they're not going to just leave a main character out for a few seasons till they can get back to him. And it would have been pretty dull if he just spent a couple of seasons walking through the snow.

Season 4 finale on Monday!

Predictions?

Spoiler:

Will Tyrion strangle Shae?
Will Twyin be shot?
Does Stannis arrive to save the day?
Do we meet Lady Stoneheart?
Will The Hound be left for dead?

I don't think they will do all of these things in one ep, so we're probably going to have to wait a little longer to reach the official end of Book 3. Based on Lena Headey's instagram I'd say Lady Stoneheart is a lock. I also think they've been building up to Arya leaving the hound behind. Not sure about the rest. If they manage to get through all of that, it could be the best finale yet.

eh, don't need spoiler tags in this thread.

anyway, my predictions:

1. tyrion will kill shae and tywin and escape king's landing
2. the wildlings will attack again but stannis and his army will show up. we wont see how the battle ends until the first ep of season 5.
3. bran and co will meet the children of the forest.
4. arya will leave a dying hound behind.
5. daenerys will cage her dragons.
6. ep will end with lady stoneheart reveal.

i think they can fit all that in since the episode runs for 66mins.

I'm pretty disappointed. I'm sure people who haven't read the books will think it's awesome, but I'm slightly concerned now.

I generally don't really care when they make changes. No Strong Belwas was disappointing, but not a huge deal. Minor changes to memorable quotes aren't a big deal. Sansa revealing her identity and Brienne finding Arya aren't really a big deal, I guess.

I was expecting this episode to have Bran finally meet Cold Hands, but instead, they pretty much just jumped to the end of ADwD. Where do they go from there?

Tyrion and Jaime and all buddy buddy, and I always got the impression that Tyrion's remark of "and the Moonboy for all I know" was one of the big things that haunted Jaime and lead him to stop caring for Cersei, pushing all of his development.

No reveal on the s****** about Tysha, which was a huge defining moment for Tyrion's story.

And how long are they going to put off Lady Stoneheart? I really f*****g hope they don't just cut her out.

Overall, disappointed.

Correct me if I'm wrong but in the books isn't the Lady Stoneheart story built up a bit, I remember reading about characters hearing rumors of Thoros of Mier (however it's spelt) and his band of brothers being led by a ghost or something? If thats right they couldn't just bring her out, my guess is in season 5 Thoros of Mier is floating around again begin led by some mysterious lady who reveals herself at the end when Brieanne of Tharth gets hung, hence the scene with her finding Ayra because she knows she has failed her promise?

No just me?

Yeah, I was disappointed too. I didn't mind most of the changes they made this season, some like Jon Snow going back to clear the traitors out of Craster's Keep I even really liked, but this episode felt like a step too far and its the first time its really felt like they've genuinely hurt the quality of it with their changes and omissions.

And how long are they going to put off Lady Stoneheart? I really f*****g hope they don't just cut her out.

Yeah, I'm starting to get the feeling they're intending in cutting her out, there should have been SOME little hint or something dropped by now =\ I mean, in the book, even before shes fully revealed, theres still the scene where Berric Dondarrion pulls her body out of the river after the red wedding, or the bit where she kills those freys. It'll just be weird now two seasons later to go "Oh, btw, yeah, we actually grabbed her body after all that happened two seasons ago" without sowing the seeds for that storyline earlier.

I think this is the first episode I've been genuinely disappointed with the changes the show has made. Lady Stoneheart, yeah whatever I don't mind so long as she shows up at some point. But having Jaime and Tyrion be best buddies and no Tysha reveal seemed weird and wrong.

It seems like they want to make Tyrion into the good guy too much, killing Shae in somewhat self defense isn't as powerful as the straight up murder we read about in the books. This is supposed to be the dark turning point for Tyrion's character.

Also without the Tysha reveal the murder of Tywin falls flat. This is something that has plagued Tyrion his whole life. Learning that Tywin had intentionally ruined his first love with a horrible cover up is a much more powerful motive than Tywin calling an actual whore a whore.

Anyway whatever, lets see what happens next season. I guess it's going to deviate more from this point on.

I've spoken to a few show watchers after the episode and they don't even know who Tysha was. So I guess the answer is yes, it is too much for the show. To get it to work properly they would have needed to lay the groundwork a lot more, mention Tysha a couple more times throughout the seasons.

It's just a little odd, why after being set free would Tyrion go up to visit Tywin? In the books it's because of this new information about Tysha, but in the show he doesn't know this. What is he expecting to accomplish going up to visit? There's no revelation that pushes him over the edge.

It'd be interesting to find out what GRRM thought about the episode.

i guess his dad did sentence him to die . . . sooo maybe he wanted to say goodbye?

but you're right. there was no reason to go up to the tower of the hand unless he had a motive. i don't think you would want to go up there, as a dwarf, during the only escape chance you have, just for a friendly chat to your dad.

Hooray I've finished all the books and can now enter this thread. So what's happening here?

I was thinking, gees no-one really important has died for a while, then the last few chapters didn't disappoint.

Also about the Lady Stoneheart stuff. So far it's all a non-event. If you took it out of the book you're not left with much, except Breanne and Jamie walking hand-in-hand into the sunset. So I an understand why the TV series has sort of skipped it.

Also lol@next series with another 10 episodes of Daenerys sitting on top of her Pyramid, fans will be livid haha

Also, isn't Cold Hands the Uncle Stark guy that went missing?

Yeah crazy the amount of CGI involved it's done so well, no wonder they can only afford 10 episodes.
