Win8 Put Shortcuts on Taskbar

How the hell do I get the selected shorcuts down into the taskbar? When I right click, I don't get any option of pinning to taskbar. I think I had this same problem with Win7. These shortcuts were created when installing the games through Steam:

try this http://lifehacker.com/5382578/pin-any-item-to-the-windows-7-taskbar

[T]here is only one simple rule that you have to follow in order to make almost any item "pinnable" to the taskbar: create a shortcut, save it somewhere safe so you don't delete it by mistake, create a shortcut to that shortcut and add the explorer word before its path. Then you have a shortcut which you can pin to the taskbar.

Won't work for everything (for example a link to an exe on a network drive).
just another reason to avoid this OS.

But its the same in win7, and win7 is the second coming of pasta, right?

What's the benefits?

- It kind of works with a tablet that you probably don't own.
- You get to learn fun new ways to do something you already knew how to do.
- Lucky Charms.

is it because it's a shortcut to the game through steam? When you right click -> properties and check the file path/destination, there is no path but some number from memory, that's maybe why?

Dude, just pin Steam to your taskbar and right click the icon to access recent games or directly go to the Steam Library.

Here's another way - hit Windows key to open up the stupid start option thing. Type 'dota' to find the dota icon. Right click it and you'll get a 'pin to start' option.

On closer inspection, it doesn't work with shortcuts of a certain type - Steam shortcuts are URI thing that point to (for example) "steam://rungameid/570" , not a regular shortcut to an executable. It looks like only the latter can be dragged to the taskbar; I cannot drag Steam shortcuts from my start menu folder into the task bar.

Weird, sure it worked for me. Though I only have one game on the taskbar, rest I launch from Steam.
You could just remove them, go to the steam folder(s) and drag them down.

windows 8 came with my laptop, first thing I did was completely disable UAC with registry hax (has the side effect of disabling metro apps too), install classic shell for a start menu and tick "skip metro screen" to head straight to the desktop.

Windows 8 can go DIAF. I try to do half the s*** I used to in windows 7 and it's moved, now instead of one click under XP, it's 3 clicks in windows7 and now in windows 8 there's about 9 clicks to get to stuff.

I love the "tap here to configure blah" popups.... tap here? F*** off tablet OS, I'm using a mouse like god intended.

e: oi Trog, what happens if you run the program and while it's sitting there in the taskbar right click -> pin to task bar? Not the shortcut, I mean the actual taskbar button. Might have to make the program a window or alt - tab out of it if it's fullscreen.

Why didn't you just use downgrade rights and install windows 7?

because I thought I'd at least give it a chance before getting rid of it. No point in hating something I've never used just because everyone else does. Now at least I can say exactly why I hate it.

also:
Follow these steps to downgrade to a previous version of Windows or Windows Server software:

Obtain genuine Windows media and a corresponding product key for the version of Windows that is eligible for downgrade.
The media should come from a prior legally licensed version from the OEM or Retail channels.
End users who are licensed separately through Microsoft Volume Licensing (VL) may provide their VL media and key to a system builder to facilitate the downgrade on their own systems.
Insert the downgrade-eligible version of Windows media in the CD drive and follow the installation instructions.
Type the product key.
If the software was previously activated, you will not be able to activate it online. In this case, the appropriate local Activation Support phone number will be displayed. Call the number and explain the circumstances. When it is determined that the end user has an eligible Windows licence, the customer service representative will provide a single-use activation code to activate the software. Please note that Microsoft does not provide a full product key in this scenario.
Activate the software.

to me reads like I need a legit copy of windows 7 pro to downgrade to? If it means windows 8 then still no way no how because no install media came with the laptop, infact there isn't even a cd key sticker on it. uber dodgy MSI ftw?

I'd do it for one machine, but I already have Win7 Ult sitting here handy... why jump thru the MS hoops?

Imaging 5 or more new machines for work in the future however... pray you have a volume license.

How the hell do I get the selected shorcuts down into the taskbar?

have you tried going into the folder where the original .exe exists and dragging *that* to the taskbar?

for example, dragging the Steam desktop shortcut to 'Brutal Legend' won't work, however, opening up C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\BrutalLegend in explorer and dragging it to the taskbar does.

err.. make sure your taskbar isn't locked
