Has anyone here used Windows Server 2012 using its Storage Space application?

I am thinking of changing my FreeNAS box to using Windows Server and using Storage Space to to look after 5 x 3TB HDD.

I've heard nothing but positives about Server 2012 TiT, but haven't made the switch myself.

My question to you is, what are you going to do with all that data whilst you switch filesystems?

At the moment only used about 3tb of the 15/12tb (using zfs FreeNAS) it's just my micro server that looks after my media etc

So with my Microserver atm using USB stick for freeNAS an have 5 3TB disk in it. Was thinking of adding SSD drive in it, Putting Windows 2012 on it then using the Storage Space for the 5 HDD. If this works fine this will be perfect and might even invest in faster Microserver as the programs i want to use are alot easier to manage on WIndows than FreeNAS and some programs dont support FreeNAS

Expect if you install Server 2012 on it you'll need to configure the drives in software raid 5 as the microservers don't do hardware raid 5. Software raid has never had a good history on windows, no idea if it's any better in 2012. One of the cool things about storage spaces is you can raid multiple external storage devices, so say for instance you had two microservers both running freenas, you could create an nfs share or iscsi lun on each, mount them in 2012 and create a raid 1 storage space out of that mirroring data on both microservers adding an extra layer of redundancy. Anyway regarding the software raid5, you can only but give it a try.

Using storage spaces on my windows 8 box at the moment.

If its the same implementation in 2012 you'll want to plan what you're doing with it ahead of time

For home it could be alright but I don't trust it enough in production, what are you using it for bulk pron storage?
