Google Reader Retiring?
So got message today saying google reader is retiring on 1st July. Anyone got recommendation on another app?

Yeah just got this as well ironically when I logged into Google Reader... f*****g sucks BIG TIME. This is the single application that I spend most of the time reading and using other than Kindle Reader. D*** move Google.
I'm trying Netvibes Free at the moment it's ok but the app isn't available for Windows phone and it's a bit slow compare to Google Reader :/ This is literally the first time I'm upset by Google pulling application usually I just sign and roll with it but this time it's real :/ I've been trying to find alternatives for years but kept coming back to Google Reader because of its simplicity. This is the only Google product I would pay to use if they made me do it as it become such and important part of day.... F*** I need a man sized tissue right now :_( |

Not happy. Use it for all my news, and most tablet and phone readers sync to it. They're trying to push google plus. I wish everyone would stop forcing social media sites down my throat.

This is the worst ever, it saves me so much time. Most of my phone reading is done on google reader and google currents. I go to the browser if I get through all the feeds and am out of content to browse fairfax.
How much could it take to keep the lights on anyways? |

Wait didn't they just spruce that up recently? Yeah, back in 2011. Sucky news, Nick Bradbury announced the plug is being pulled on FeedDemon as well. It'll still work locally but it won't be updated to sync to any new Reader-like API. As a replacement, http://www.feedly.com/ isn't bad, but obviously they're working on the load issues at the moment like all the other web RSS reader replacement candidates. Chrome & Firefox plugins, iOS & Android apps as well. At the moment it only syncs with Google Reader but they've announced they'll have a contingency for syncing in place for when the Reader API goes offline. |

Yep, agree with all of this, totally sucks. It's one of the only sites that I actually use everyday, and get all my news and entertainment from it, not to mention use it to keep up to date with new research for work. *sadface*

Yeah I've just moved over to Feedly. At the moment I've just got my Google Reader feed in there. I'm assuming that when the Google Reader feed goes so will that. So I'll probably have to find a way to migrate it over permanently? Real pain in the arse. I can't image much development time would be going into Reader these days so I don't know why they're closing it off :| |

Sharing is like the only thing they have in common. Not since the last big update either. Google ripped the sharing features out of Reader so you had to use g+. It's no wonder Reader usage was declining. I'm very happy with feedly now. I'd nabbed their app a few weeks back on iOS just to check it out but didn't realise it'd be a permanent solution. |

Yeah pretty much I've Googles (LOLZ) how to use Google+ as Google reader as replacement and just haven't found a way to do it sensibly. Frankly Google+ layout is s*** for quick information ingestion, this is how I use Google Reader. I don't want to have to actually "read" every god damn posts to see what it's about I want to be able to glance at the headline quickly through the list and only read the articles that I want by pressing "v" to open in new tab and just keep powering on. Given the amount of information that are out there these days, I can't see use case for any of these fancy visual style reader such as Flipbord, Feedly etc. They are "pretty" yeah but if you only have one or two feeds maybe. I have 29 feeds (and I'm not even considered a heavy users compare to some) and I get 500+ articles a day. Imagine if I use hipster style Flipboard reader... I'd be there forever. So far Netvibes is the best replacement, pretty much similar to Google reader in terms of data layout and keyboard shortcuts. Such a shame they don't have web optimised version for Windows mobile platform :/ I've been trying other replacements but they are totally useless at the moment due to people fleeing.... :/ |

This is the WORST NEWS EVER. I have used Google Reader every day since I found it.
I set up an instance of Tiny Tiny RSS and trying to use that: http://tt-rss.org/redmine/projects/tt-rss/wiki It has mobile app versions (at least for Android) so that's nice. If you have some webspace it's worth a look - not as good as GR but it's probably an OK replacement. Still keen to try others though. If anyone wants to check it out I'm happy to make you a test account on my install and you can have a play. |

I had a look at Tiny Tiny RSS but it's just going to be too much work to run it etc... I'm lazy these days.
The old reader (http://theoldreader.com/) is back online and appears to be a very close replacement of the Google Reader. Plus it will import all your Google Reader's list into it so that's great. They just need to have either mobile version of the site or web app for WP8. Apparently the WP8 app I'm using now (NextGen) reader will support backend such as one from Feedly or the old reader or newsblur so that's good news at least. In the way looking at it now after I have time to calm down, it is probably good thing Google got rid of it because realistically that product wasn't going anywhere, it was pretty much left to die of a slow death for the past few years. Such pity Google can't find a way to monitsed the product...... |

Downside to feedly is that the chrome extension seems to have a pretty nasty memory leak. Hopefullly they'll fix it in the coming months.
I think it enabled Chrome to run in the background or it was the first extension to use this setting so Chrome popped up in the system tray. Right click on Chrome in the system tray and uncheck 'Let Google Chrome run in the background' is a workaround. I just let it run in the background at first but came back to half a gig of memory used by the feedly background page and Chrome on the verge of crashing. :/ |

Not sure how easy it would be to migrate your Feedly stuff to another service either though. I think down the track Feedly will start charging for services or features? |

In the last few days feedly has started showing ads in a few places. They're not obtrusive, but they're already trying to keep it sustainable. |

Stop it from running in the background. Personally I don't let any Chrome extensions run in the background. I prefer just going to feedly.com rather than using the addon. Kind of annoying you need the addon actually :(I don't really get how feedly works. It looks like it's just a browser extension but to actually make it work like Reader, you need a web account on the Feedly service which then (I assume) talks to the browser extension? |

Yeah, feedly doesn't come in the form of a web site UI like Google Reader, it's a service you subscribe to that either syncs with your Google Reader subscription or (in the very near future) does server side RSS subscription tracking like Reader does. The feedly.com web site basically just exists to host the company blog, faq and deliver the browser extensions.
I assume the extensions (Safari, Firefox & Chrome) and the iOS and Android apps all connect to the same service behind the scenes. I don't have a separate feedly account, I just used the same Google account as I do with Google Reader and it automatically synced all my Reader feeds. |

No worries guys, the only problem for is that there isn't a client for the old reader on Windows Phone 8 :_( The NextGen reader app on WP8 is what I use currently and they have a "solution" for syncing after Google Reader is shut off, I'm hoping they'll announce they'll be using the old reader as their back ends.. /fingers crossed!

Android app would be my biggest request - I use my RSS reader on my phone more than my desktop. Would be good to have the one feed synched between devices.

I've completely migrated to Feedly now. They have both pure web and open API available to third parties apps so you can sync it on your phones on any platform - even WP8 haha.
It'll also import Google Reader list (with a few catches but works fine), similar keyboard short cuts, various article views to suit and fast and reliable. its 2013... get over rss already... Yeah there were quite a few articles like that after Google announced Reader's closure. Ding dong, RSS is dead! What should we replace RSS with though? The 12 million+ users that are now on feedly wouldn't mind suggestions. Google+, Facebook & Twitter streams are a joke for tracking hundreds of sites on a specific set of topics |

I've been trying feedly for a couple weeks. It is doable but still not as good as Reader, mostly because it's a little too slow for me (I really notice the few hundred milliseconds of latency flicking between things).
Until recently it was happily keeping my read/unreads in sync between it and Reader but it lost that a few days ago when they turned on 'cloud'. I have found their comms about the cloud thing to be completely useless - no idea what it is or why I care about it, just that there's some stupid convoluted thing happening. The mobile app for Android is sort of nice but sort of irritating: 1) can't mark as unread. That really bugs me. 2) you can't tap the header of an item and have it open in your web browser. It opens in some embedded frame that does not use the local browser cookies. That is f*****g irritating as s***; it means for websites I read regularly in browser I have to have a completely separate login maintained within Feedly app, or manually open it in Chrome by navigating through the menu options. Going to stick with it though for a while to see if it's just learning pains. |

For me, the cloud reader is great because then you won't need the plugin for browser any more just hit their cloud page and migrate and your Google Reader list to it. Granted during the initial import it'll mark all items as unread which sucked but I normally get through my read list every couple of days so that wasn't a big problem for me so I just cleared it all and then just wait for the latest to get populated and off I go. For mobile app for Android I recommend using third party that plugs into Feedly cloud's backend, gReader is what I use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.noinnion.android.greader.reader&hl=en It resolved nearly all of your problems listed above. On WP8 I use NextGen Reader, they are now all working nicely together since they (and I) switched to their cloud reader. |

Oh, so is that the point of the cloud reader - it's just the usual reader but you don't need a plugin? For Feedly? Yup. Some redditors have also been working on https://www.commafeed.com which is open source and you can host on your own servers if you want. It looks pretty decent. |

Yeah they could certainly do without the stupid overloaded cloud terminology. "feedly cloud" is what they're calling their implementation of the Google Reader back end services so they remove their dependency on Reader to track read/unread/flagging/rss polling etc. Previously they were just an alternative Flipboard style front end to Google Reader. Whereas the cloud.feedly.com site is their replacement for the front end of Google Reader so you can use IE or Safari without the Chrome plugin. |
