That's when you give their mirror the fist treatment. Also your mate is an idiot too (or maybe its you) for going down the middle of the cars stopped at the traffic lights. You did essentially the same thing to that black 4wd behind the silver ford / toyota / nissan / whatever the hell it is.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with riding between cars that are stopped, at traffic lights. this is normal practice in many countries world wide, and is currently legal in Sydney, undergoing trial.

Meh, legalities don't necessarily mean safety. I've been lane-splitting / filtering for 8 years as its been illegal, never been fined, nor had an accident.
Otherwise, theres no real point to commuting on a motorcycle, unless its a small scooter for cost savings.

I like the part of the movie where you were clearly already riding like a d*** and your way of showing that Rav4 was to pass him still in the right lane and doing a maverick (flyby).

"There's absolutely nothing wrong with riding between cars that are stopped, at traffic lights." - You passed the green Toyota while braking for the lights (not stopped), again in the same lane.

Sorry dude, you're just another bike rider who rides to their opinion of the rules....Mate completed his qride a few months back and current law is under no circumstances are you to lane split (middle or sides), stopped/braking/accelerating.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and if you went back 30 minutes on the video, your trip through Nebo will be like the majority of people who go to the Nebo hillclimb.

lane splitting may be illegal now but give it time for the authority's to come to their senses here in aus like Vash said it is been trailed in sydney; with positive results. i will always lane split legal or not as it is most of the time safer out front away from teh tin cans.
i have been lane splitting a couple of times and saw a cop up ahead so stop. both times they waved me trough to the front even they know its safer for bikes up front, sometimes you just get unlucky and a cop needs to fill his/her quota or they just don't like the look of you.
i really hope they pass the law nation wide.

FYI if something does happen like a car doesn't see you and runs over your face/leg, given the whole lack of law thing, you will be automatically at fault and a high chance an insurance issue for you. Certainly can't sue the other car.

I lane split but my general rule is:
No car must be moving that I will be passing.
No bus/truck/medium sized vehicle in either lane I'll be splitting past.
Wide gap.
Only if I saw the light go red and know I can get to the front.

Splitting safely is probably about as dangerous as walking down a footpath in the middle of the afternoon.

For what it's worth, I'd be more concerned sitting in a set of lights within the traffic and someone running up my ass than splitting stationary cars.

Another reason I sit far to one side of any lane if I am stopped in traffic - if I do get ran into hopefully not sandwiched.

I don't ride that often anyway. In the last 2ish years my bike has done ~1500 k's .

I'm dead set on getting a motorbike for daily commuting when I get back this year. Getting fined for lane splitting stationary cars = lame.

When someone in a car sees a motorcyclist lane splitting stationary cars they should feel:

"He is saving me time by improving traffic"

Not

"I'm queuing here in traffic and this prick is skipping to the front"

PS. Could have go pro footage of me riding roads on Samui soon.

When someone in a car sees a motorcyclist lane splitting stationary cars they should feel:
Sure. I'll agree there. I honestly have no ill intention on a motorcycle who ends up reducing congestion given it's perfectly safe and adds no 'cost' to me in anxiety or worry about having to brake if he starts to do it during moving traffic or when up ahead someone tries to kill him and i've got to do some kind of reactive shenanigan to give space or brake hard when s*** goes wrong.

It's happened before, and it will happen again, as everyone feels their roadrules are better than the real ones.

Once you pop out of an advanced riding course, you realise two things: that after a near miss or an accident:

1. Arrogant / d******* riders blame the other car.
2. Better riders blame themselves for not anticipating the scenario and/or not being in a better position on the road.

Short of a car or semi flying across the road in the wrong direction out of nowhere and wiping you out without a chance to react, most near misses or accidents are your own fault. Almost every time.

I still don't understand why motorcyclists expect anything BUT cars intentionally trying to kill them.

I don't ride but I have had jobs couriering and postie vanning, as well as loving to drive my own car and as a result of the uncountable numbers of stupid s*** I have witnessed, I won't even take off from an intersection with an approaching car using their indicator because I don't trust them to make the turn.

Nearly everyone on the road is f*****g incompetent. I would be scared s***less on a bike in traffic because I have had an obscene amount of cars change lanes on me without looking, to the point where I always have a finger on the horn when passing cars - I would expect it to happen every time I went out if I was on a bike and harder to see.

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo I'm not really sure why anyone is surprised.

I wish I could ride a bike safely (ie. the f*** away from cars) because they look like crazy fun, but until I can afford to learn and exclusively use one on a track, I reckon Ill stick with cars. That and I am not beyond making a mistake and wiping myself out... at least I have a chance in a car :P

Lane splitting will never make riding as safe as a car, but it certainly weighs more in our favour, giving us our own little lane, some space where a car won't go because it leads to colliding with another car. We're more likely to be hit riding in a full lane, simply because our profile is much smaller, and we're less visible.

The only downside i can think of are stupid drivers opening their doors while they're stopped, ive seen this a few times. you'd be unlucky to hit one as it opens while you're travelling at speed.

Other is aggressive drivers who simply don't like being overtaken when they're stuck. I actually had one aim at me with his bullbar, and luckily i had a path to go between cars to get away.

joerocket10r, that was the dumbest video I've seen this year. Classic quotes:

"I've never not split lanes, that's been a problem with legality sometimes, it's just what motorcyles do, it's just how motorcycles operate."

That's how motorcycles operate? lol.

"everywhere in the world, lane splitting is legal"

That's an ambitious statement, which also happens to be false.

What you don't seem to get:

Safest way to ride a motorbike = when in the vicinity of cars or other bikes, follow road protocol (i.e. the road rules) so that people can [ideally] predict when and where you are going to perform an action, and also leave substantial space in front / behind / beside you. No sudden maneuvers either. It's about maximising your chances of being seen and not hit.

Non-safe way to ride = reducing your safety buffer by riding close to cars or out of a lane to overtake them, whether they are stationary or not.

You can go on all you like about how the cars are stationary while you split, but 50% of lane-splitting I see ends up with the light going green before the bike gets to the front, and then an awkward maneuver to remerge in the middle of the intersection (the worst place to be negotiating your position on a city road).

Also, there is one incident i know, a guy i knew personally died when he was riding past traffic on the inside, between the gutter and the cars, at speed.
Poor decision, there was a drive way coming up and he didnt slow down, and a car pulled into a drive way knocking him into a telegraph pole.

So you always need to be aware, and assume you're invisible.

Disagree.
Never, rely on other road users. Always assume that car you're looking at hasnt seen you, and will just pull in front of you at any moment. Always keep a finger on the brake.
I feel safest when cars are stopped, and im going between them, gaining ground to my destination.

Travelling along with traffic going 60+KM/H, feels less safe, than if the cars were stopped and i continued on.

It's also very uncomplicated to re-merge as cars begin to move again. If it looks awkward, the rider was inexperienced.

You disagree with leaving a buffer zone around you and not making sudden movements? Interesting.
Never, rely on other road users.

Who said anything about relying on other road users? I specifically said "It's about maximising your chances of being seen".
Always assume that car you're looking at hasnt seen you

Good assumption to make and I don't disagree. However, riding more predictably increases your probability of being seen and is a necessary first line of defence IMHO.

Probability: that's what riding on a shared road comes down to. You have to swing it your way as much as possible.

Sudden movements are also acceptable on a motorcycle, though it depends on the situation. It's saved my ass many times.

Maximising your chances of being seen is staying out of blind spots, there isn't much else you can do. Even when im driving, i find myself struggling to see certain motorcycles. Namely, dirt bikes. Extremely slim profiles. I tend to just avoid cars at any chance.

Some riders i observe sit on the arse of cars, or just have generally risky behavior. Personally i feel i can get away with a fair bit since i ride a very light, nimble and high bike that feels like a bicycle when ridden. Tend to chase the cyclists in the city through traffic, bit of fun.

To avoid a collision, sure. But I'm talking about sudden overtaking/splitting, sudden accelerating + getting along side a car to make an angry statement (like in the first vid that went private), etc.

If you truly believe that then I'd suggest taking any short advanced or defensive motorbike course.

I'm sure parabol specifically is referring to the "There isn't much else you can do" because i totally agree with your "Maximising your chances of being seen by stying out of blind spots" is the number 1 most important skill, but not the only skill of being a motorcyclist.

Not to cut your grass, but i don't hate lane splitting when it's done in stationary traffic. but anecdotal evidence never looks at both sides, it looks as the biker's perspective saying "It's OK!" missing the caveat that every car driver says "I stay in my lane, never swerving and never doing anything unpredictable or sudden".

Honestly if you think that it's safe then you must be a sociopath, it's just the risk reward in many situations is often quite ok.

Then again most will say that jaywalking is safe, then have the caveat that they'll only do it when there's good visibility and clearly no cars for X distance so it's impossible for something to hit them. The law and the reality is often slightly askew but anyone who says jaywalking is always safe is a f*****g moron.
