Next Generation Consoles
Hi All,
I'm here to start the conversation of the next generation console wars! With the announcement of the next gens on the horizon, speculation as to who will triumph and who will fall, looms heavily over the heads of these major corporations. This conversation isn't just aimed at Xbox and Playsation (PS4? Orbis? To be confirmed), it can also include the Wii U, Steambox, Ouya and the gamestick. My speculation: If Sony release before Xbox at a price range of $500AU to $600AU they will become the dominate console, enticing people with their large exclusive game list. Xbox will fumble putting heaps of money into kinect instead investing money into exclusive games.Wii U will coast along making money of sonic and mario. Steambox will make a good amount of sales as many pc fans will follow with loyalty. Ouya and Gamestick will be a novelty that will just get slapped silly if priced to high. |

I predict more games will devolve to the lowest common denominator of gameplay, there will be an insane amount of cutscenes and publishers will become disenfranchised with f2p models because they implement it as a strategy to milk consumers.

Follow where? Why would someone with a current gen pc even bother with a steambox. I'm assuming alot of people with a decent amount of steam games would want to buy this. Also if it is priced decently it would have a 'how much could it hurt to have it' attitude with many Edit: If they bring it out with the new half life they could do alot of damage. |

Follow where? Why would someone with a current gen pc even bother with a steambox. If it allowed a mouse + keyboard, who wouldn't buy one to have a quick bash of their favourite FPS? You should be asking why people with decent PC's are buying Wii's. |

You mean the games they could currently play on their pc? No, I mean the games they could sit down with the family and play in front of the TV in the lounge, instead of in their mom's basement, alone on the PC. wii at least has different games. 50 shades of mario doesn't count as different. |

I think Microsoft will come out on top just because Sony seems to have dropped the ball these days. They still have a few good exclusive titles trickling out that are worth playing, but their utter failure to launch the Vita doesn't give me much hope for them successfully launching a PS3 followup.

To be honest I am less interested in consoles these days. PCs provide me with the games I want to play, and typically have the vast majority of console releases too.
No doubt there will be some exclusive releases which I will likely get the consoles for, but to be honest I don't' care either way. People who are interested in the 'console wars' usually do so only because they can only afford to buy 1 console. The easiest solution is to be all of them assuming there's games you want on every console. |

The vita launch was pretty much like the ps3 launch. I remember for the first 2 years the ps3 copped flack for having "no games" when compared to the 360 which had gears 1 and halo 3. There were so many gloom and doom stories that the ps3 is dead as it had no AAA games coming out and lackluster sales especially after the first 2 holiday seasons in the u.s.
I bought a ps3 at launch and i almost believed the media hype at the time. |

I don't see the steam box attracting current pc users,maybe It will get current console players who have s*** pc's and to play pc games. This is me, especially with games like path of exile and sim city 50 shades of mario doesn't count as different. Haha, does this forum have a rep button? The vita launch was pretty much like the ps3 launch. I remember for the first 2 years the ps3 copped flack for having "no games" So they've made the same mistake twice then, that gives even less hope that they're going to launch a PS4 successfully. Sony may have dominated in the PS2 days, but they've definitely come off second best in this current console generation (or third best I guess if you include the Wii). And I'm not talking quality of games or exclusives or my personal feelings one way or the other (I own both, like Zapo said, theres games on both I want to play), but just purely when it comes to numbers. More copies of cross-platform titles are generally sold on 360 than PS3 and more 360's are generally sold than PS3s. Oh yeah, and Sony is circling the drain and going broke, which to be fair isn't entirely the fault of their entertainment division, but still, its not really a strong position to be in. |

Unless the next gen runs every game at 1080p and 60fps for at least the first couple of years I won't be interested. I upgraded recently to a PC that runs every game at 60fps full detail and I can never go back now.

More copies of cross-platform titles are generally sold on 360 than PS3 and more 360's are generally sold than PS3s. wrong. ps3 has outsold 360 worldwide since end of last year. the wii has outsold both. |

Oh yeah, and Sony is circling the drain and going broke, which to be fair isn't entirely the fault of their entertainment division, but still, its not really a strong position to be in. Hopefully they see this as their saviour and pump most of their money into it. They shouldn't be judged on the launch of the Vita, if anything it should highlight the fact they were concentrating on the next gen. They might have released the Vita first so when the PS4 comes out they will be like, look it can sync with your Vita and all games on your ps4 can be played with cross over saves on the Vita. Developer X might make a game that runs at 60fps, but there's always going to be developer Y who will make their game prettier but run at 30fps. Most big franchises will follow developer Y's example, because they don't want to be the one making the game with bad graphics. |

Yeah 4k is gonna be a while to take in.
If they push their own studios to do it they will speed up the progress. I fear they will sacrifice graphics over gameplay and storyline. |

I can't see games being output at 4k, I mean you'd need a pretty beefy PC to play today's games in that resolution, and looking at the leaked specs, it just doesn't have the grunt to do it. The system might be capable of outputting at 4k but I'd imagine it'll be more for media than games.

A lot of people could disagree with this point, for example the walking dead has simple comic graphics yet the game storyline is absolutely amazing. Also the spread of resources means if one department of the game is getting money then another might be losing out on money. Simply said " let's invest money in 4k graphics for our games, Don't worry we don't need to have an engaging storyline, 3 writers will do quite fine compared to 4" |

I want to buy a PS3 to catch up on those exclusives that i've missed out on. (uncharted, heavy rain etc.) Anyone seen any good deals lately? I was just looking at the 12GB model because the way I understand it I can just throw a laptop hard drive into them right? |

I have a X-box 360, a PS3 and a Wii and am tossing up whether or not to get a WiiU but what I would like to see is Sega and Atari getting back into making consoles. I know it won't happen probably but it would be great to see more than 4 consoles to choose from.
