So I'm alternating between luke warm and cold on this thing. I'm a real pushover when it comes to gaming, I own all the current gen consoles and generally have more money than sense. HOWEVER I can't see myself buying a WiiU at this point, there arent any games for it that interest me. I may crack on launch day and rush out to buy one, but right now I'm staying strong.
This whole games are addictive thing has got me thinking I should go out and get one just to get that awesome dopamine rush that I crave. I haven't bought a new console in years, and I'm kinda ready for a fix. At this point in time that is the only rational reason I have for buying one. I'm yet to meet anyone who is looking forward to buying one. That can't be good. Anyone super excited for this thing? Have you preordered? Anyone else out there like me, torn between buying stupid s*** or saving your money? |
Got one pre-ordered at D*** Smith, though sadly they won't price match Kmart's pricing of $379 for the premium pack because its actually lower then their cost value or something. Doesn't really bother me though as Kmart aren't taking pre-orders, just that they'll have "some" stock on Friday for whoever gets in first.
Generally I'm quite excited for this console, more than I have been for past generations (read: only just bought a PS3 late last year and selling it already), so will be quite an interesting bit of tech. I'm more interested in the tablet then anything, I have some great ideas I want to try and execute on the Wii U if I can get my hands on some development tools. Also really looking forward to ZombiU, sounds like a cross between Resident Evil and Dark Souls so should be fun. Not to bothered by the apparent lacking CPU or specs, Nintendo have always been about gameplay to me then shiny new looks. |

Nah i'll wait for the next gen of less gimmick consoles
|
Nah i'll wait for the next gen of less gimmick consoles which one? xbox will have kinect 2.0 and PS4 will have some gimmick going for it as well. umming and ahhing about selling my vita for the wii u. |
Yeah but that's a side thing
Wii is built around it |
nope. i wasn't interested in the wii and i'm not interested in the extra u.
|
Haven't pre-ordered but I'll probably get one just because I have a bit of a soft spot for Nintendo. Admittedly I've not really been excited about a Nintendo console since the Gamecube though, Nintendo's gimmicks were better in the old days when they were optional accessories (like the power glove or super scope) and not forced upon the gamer as the centerpiece of the console. That said, I have more interest in using the tablet as a controller than I ever did for the wiimotes. The idea is not too disimilar to using the GBA as a second screen on the Gamecube for certain games as were the wiimotes being kind of an updated power glove.
|
im in 2 boats about it but might wait when there special on and you get super mario bro U for free with it or something... only reason i would get it too is to keep my virtual games that i ahve on my wii and get a bit of money back from my wii
|
I'm sitting in the luke warm camp as well. Gaming has taken a bit of a back seat over the past few weeks/months and if I had time to play something it'd something I already own (SC2, GW2, etc). The line up just isn't convincing me to jump in with the Wii-U either.
|
I haven't seen a reason to get a Wii U. Maybe once the next Zelda title is closer I'll consider it, but there's simply no launch titles (or upcoming titles) that look remotely interesting to me.
The same was true of the 3DS when I got it, but I ended up buying maybe 12 games in the first 12 months. But right now, I have AC3 on PS3... can't see anything else due for release. |
ZombieU and the new scribble naughts have peaked my interests, but I don't know if thats enough to buy it...
|
i love my wii dearly and still use it every day (when i can get a go from spook jnr)
but im in no hurry for wiiu will wait and see if the modding community gets into it first! |
Modding community are failing at the 3DS (with the exception to being able to run DS games.. which lets face it isn't actually hacknig the 3ds but tricking it into thinking its running a DS through its weak emulation).
|
Probably would of been more interested if the Mario launch title was more like the free room style (Mario 64, sunshine, galaxy etc) instead of the sidescroller.
None of the other launch titles really grab me either. I'll probably hold off and see what games come out for it next year. |
Pretty interested to see what the moddin' peeps do with this. Probably get one for Mario (kart!!) only reason I bought a Wii.
|
i didn't buy any of the 'current' generation consoles and won't buy the next generation of consoles.
|
I can think of better things to do with money than buying a Wii U.
Every time a new big N console comes out I question whether they can move away from first and second party titles being the only big titles. Third party developers really haven't fully thrown their weight behind a Nintendo console since the SNES. |
One 349 dollar hooker, or 349 one dollar hookers?One $200 hooker and 2 g's of blow! |
Given I haven't turned the Wii on in nearly 12 months....no
But I haven't turned the 360 or ps3 on in that time either. hmm. |
They have crap games that no one knows and sorry grew out of mario and donkey long years ago...they just never grew up with their demograph unlike most other game providers This. I have my big boy pants and only play cereal games for grown ups. |
I never grew up, so I guess its perfect for me!
|
You grew out of fun games? That's a shame.
|
hrm.. no not for a while at least not until my busy lifestyle changes.
|
When I get my WiiU, the first thing I'm gonna do is watch a DVD on it. Oh, wait a sec...
|
When I get my WiiU, the first thing I'm gonna do is watch a DVD on it. Oh, wait a sec... Did you just remember that DVDs are old and s***? |
When I get my WiiU, the first thing I'm gonna do is watch a DVD on it. Oh, wait a sec... I would think in the year of 2012 people would have at least one piece of hardware that can play DVD's, let alone some form of a Blu Ray player. |
I would think in the year of 2012 people would have at least one piece of hardware that can play DVD's Not if you only have a Wii U in the house. Boom! But seriously. How much more would it cost Nintendo to pay the license fee to have it play DVD's? I hear the old Wii could play them with some type of firmware so obviously the thing can read the discs. Just seems so cheap. Did you just remember that DVDs are old and s***? You'd be surprised how many people don't care about bluray or hi-def stuff and are happy with DVD's. |
You'd be surprised how many people don't care about bluray or hi-def stuff and are happy with DVD's. I"m never surprised that there are poor people. |

I hear the old Wii could play them with some type of firmware so obviously the thing can read the discs. Just seems so cheap. The Wii demonstrated that not enough people care about DVD playback for it to matter. Now let's say it costs $1 per console to license DVD playback, and Nintendo sell 50-100 million WiiU consoles. You're basically asking "Why doesn't Nintendo want to lose $50-100 million?" |
Then just add $1 on to the sale of the console and they wont lose anything. Funny how Sony and Microsoft can afford to but somehow it's just too much money for Nintendo.
|
The only physical media worth buying is blu-rays and that is only because the internet in Australia is so s*****.
|
You'd be surprised how many people don't care about bluray or hi-def stuff and are happy with DVD's. I don't find that surprising, I just don't care about what those people want. You know what I would find surprising though? Someone who owned a bunch of DVDs and didn't already have something to play them on. |
Funny how Sony and Microsoft can afford to but somehow it's just too much money for Nintendo. It's not that it's too much money, it's just wasted money. If McDonald's could make their burgers slightly better by raising the cost of ingredients by five cents, do you think they would do it if it had no significant impact on the amount of burgers sold? |
really, it just boils down to, no one wants to play dvds
|

Just so you know, MS do not ship DVD playback with basic Windows. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2012/05/04/q-amp-a-dvd-playback-and-windows-media-center-in-windows-8.aspx You need to buy / download a player like VLC, get the Pro version and install Media Centre (free for a limited time only) http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows-8/feature-packs I wouldn't be surprised at all if the 360's successor did not include DVD playback out of the box, and was instead a purchaseable add-on from the Store. This makes sense, so that rather than slug everyone with the licensing costs, people who want DVD playback can pay for it. |
All my dvds are sitting in boxes. Time to move on people.
|
I think that the better think to do is wait until next november at least.
All the problems will be resolve, it will be at a good price and there will be more games |
Although it doesn't have as many games as wii I would go for a kinect ... Wait the next xbox with probably kinect 2. Kinect actually doesnt't work very well and there are few good games. |
I'm shocked at how much I am actually playing the U. I was dubious but I'm sold now, the tablet controller is a godsend in my house. Last night I was sitting there playing a few Scribblenauts levels while wifey watched some of those picker / pawn shop shows. Its so handy that I can see myself buying future SP games on the U rather than PC.
Gabe a has a good write-up here. Its a much handier feature than I expected! |
Scribblenauts is fun, but if kind of annoys me how the whole game takes place on the gamepad, you never really need to look at the tv ever, which I guess is good for the situation you describe, but for me it just feels like I may as well be playing it on a hand-held system.
Haven't had an opportunity to dig more into Zombi-U, but that really impressed me. I was pretty lukewarm about it and only really got it based on the good buzz it had been generating and cos people here recommended it, but I'm glad I did cos its really pretty damn cool. |

I don't think scribblenauts would work well with the main gameplay and input on the TV rather than the gamepad, its far too driven by the stylus clicking on s***. I can't for the life of me think of a non-aggravating way to play the game with the TV as the main display? Jeremiah Slaczka, Creative Director at Scribblenauts developer 5th Cell, told me that Unlimited began its life on Nintendo's previous machine. "We’d been developing Scribblenauts Unlimited for the Wii for awhile, but were seriously struggling with how to deal with typing without a peripheral," he said. "The GamePad totally mitigated that concern." I am very rarely playing the Wii alone, so the TV being an echo of the gamepad works well for us, as everyone in the room can input on suggestions for objects etc. to solve puzzles and there's no information that lives solely on the gamepad or TV. Also makes it an excellent way to help with kid's spelling, you can just look up when they having trouble and correct the word from the kitchen etc. |
Yeah I can't really think of a better way to do it either I guess, just felt a bit odd to me to sit down in front of the tv to play a game, and then not actually play it on the tv.
|
Thinking of grabbing one of these for the Mrs for her birthday... Worth the coin or what?
|
Wait for Mario Kart 8, Pikmin 3 and Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD. Though if you like Lego, Monster Hunter, Nintendoland, ZombieU, Injustice, Rabbids or New Super Mario Bros. then sure, grab it now.
|
Not going to get it.
I played Mario at JBHifi with my daughter, she used the wiimote and I used the wiiU screen to help her, that was kind of fun. Not enough to drop $350 odd on it. Maybe when it comes down in price, maybe. |
Or Sonic Racing, or Tekken or Scribblenauts. We own: SMBU Lego City Undercover Tekken Ben 10: Omniverse Nintendoland Scribblenauts Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed Need for Speed: Most Wanted U None of them (Ben 10 only survives because the kids are fanatics) are likely to be traded in. |
If you've got mates who come over (unlikely) Call of Duty Black Ops 2 is awesome as you get a screen each. The only problem is one way screen cheating. To solve this, the other person faces away. Had some epic games.
|
I'll buy one eventually when I can justify the expense, as I still have plenty of unfinished games that I already own. Right now it's the only console I'm particularly interested in because of the first party titles, though Destiny does look phenomenal.
|
Reckon it's worth shelling the extra coin for the premo console or just go basic? Premo = more internal memory and nintendoland bundled. Basic = less int memory and console only.
Is the bundled game worth the extra coin considering you can use a usb hard drive for additional storage? |
I've had a WiiU since release, it's ok. Be better in a few months when there are some new games..
|
Ok so i bought this for the mrs and today we've spent most of the day playing the new super mario game.
She's happy, we've had a lot of fun with it and so far i'm digging the gamepad control scheme thing even though the battery seems to last for an hour and it needs a recharge. Clever console anyways and so far, damn good fun... |
anyone played the lego game which is like GTA? I was only keen on that game
|
anyone played the lego game which is like GTA? I was only keen on that game Very fun game, only problem is the load times but get use to them. |
Yeah and no co op but other than that, yeah definitely worthy. Mrs has been hammering it. So much hidden stuff to find, you could be on this one for ages... Good humour too, plenty of lols
|
I haven't touched mine in about 5 months but going to fire it up this weekend to get back into it. I haven't played it for so long because a lack of time for all gaming and I didn't really have any games that were exciting to play.
|
I mainly use my WiiU to watch YouTube sub on the old telly in my bedroom. I'm chipping away at Lego city underground though. Might get new super luigi this weekend.
|
Got Pikmin 3 the other day, it's f*****g awesome.
|
Lego city cracks me up... some of the humour is really good in it. If you sit around and listen to some of the conversations the city folk have there's some really funny s***...
lol'd last night, farmer telling his mate about how aliens abducted him... "They probed me you know" "really??" "yeah they asked me all sorts of questions"... Then, "they also stuck this machine right up my..." mate goes into "lalalalala" mode... cracked me up... |
The Wii U was the first console I bought at launch and it has taught me a valuable lessen. Never by a console at launch. A few months ago I was going to preorder a ps4, but after looking at the launch line up and then thinking of my last console purchase (wiiu) I have postponed my purchase.
Anyway now that it has been out for almost a year a decent amount of (personally) interesting games are coming for the wii u and I can see myself with a backlog over the next 6 months. |
No, never buy a Nintendo console at launch. The wii was the same.
|
If anyone hasn't already, buy Disney Infinity. Just grabbed it for Wii U and it is basically Little Big Planet but on crack. So good and pleases my inner figurine collector.
|
I think the WiiU was certainly my most regretful purchase when it comes to gaming hardware. While theres slowly starting to be more stuff released on it now, I'm finding very little (ie none) of it is stuff that appeals to me or that I want to play. I was sucked in by the promise of the technology, and Nintendo talking about wanting to appeal to core gamers more, but almost a year in and still nothing has really delivered on that promise and the core gamer has been all but forgotten as the system skews back to casual/kids/family/gimmick games.
Now with the PS4 and XBone just around the corner, I'd imagine the WiiU will get used even less, which considering I haven't turned it on since April, is already not very much. |
Hehe, that was mostly true till recently, been trying to make an effort to not play quite as much wow and play some other stuff. Work through my huge pile of shame
|
probably not
I wanted to but i'm just tired of nintendo's arrogance and feel they need to learn a lesson. If gamer accounts weren't tied to the hardware, if nintendo had brought out an achievement system, and if they delivered on 3rd party games like they promised... I might've considered a wii u. |
Nope. It doesn't appeal to me, no Nintendo console or games appeal to me apart from Retro Nintendo (N64, NES)
|
So youll buy it in 5 years time then?
|
Nope. It doesn't appeal to me, no Nintendo console or games appeal to me apart from Retro Nintendo (N64, NES) 3DS?, |
I'm thinking about getting one for myself finally. I am a nintendo fan boy though and can't go past zelda and mario games. Hopefully trade in the old wii's and get a fair chunk off at EB.
|
WiiU who? I haven't seen anything about them be it on the net or in any stores anywhere. their marketing department should be assed, or maybe they have been already considering it's non existant
|
There seems to be a few Nintendo games coming out around now and into early next year I'm keen to play, all made by Nintendo though apart from Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze. Mario Land 3D and Mario Kart 8 are the must gets for me.
I'll end up getting a PS4 but with these games coming out on the WiiU, and the lack of games I'm interested in at the moment on the PS4, the WiiU will keep me going for a bit. Though I say this now but I'll probably still give in and get a PS4 anyway before Christmas, I have a tendency to impulse buy when it comes to video game related things. |
