Recreating Brunswick Street Mall as a two-lane road is one of the proposals being considered by lord mayor Graham Quirk as part of his plan to “fix” Fortitude Valley.

Looks like they've decided the mall there is no good, and they're looking at other options.

The poll on the site asks readers:

Do you think Brunswick Street Mall should be opened to traffic?
Yes - but one slow lane only
Yes - one lane of traffic each way
Yes - but only during the day, and closed to cars at night
No, it should remain closed to cars

What do you think?

I can tell you my opinion; it isn't the mall itself that is a problem, it's some of the regulars that spend a lot of time there.

I don't understand the problem, and i'd say 70% of the votes do not. I neither work there, or need to drive through there. So my only concern is the very few times i'm there for dinner, if i want cars passing by.

I voted no.

where's the 'build a tunnel under the mall' option?

Build a network of tunnels with subway trams running through.

Perfect! Tunnel from one end of the mall to the other, whack a set of traffic lights at the intersection of Brunswick St and the Clem 7, done! :D

The mall closed to cars creates a heap of congestion due to Brisbane cities ongoing and famous amount of "one-way streets". No other city in AU, and probably the world has so many damn one-way streets. Turning it into anything other than
Yes - one lane of traffic each way
is a waste of time, else keep it closed.

We have enough problems with drunks getting hit by cars in the valley and they want to create another road for drunks to stumble out on to... brilliant.

opening it up will be like the silly street at the gold coast where all the fully sic cars go by with broken exhausts + ppl who walk across the road without thinking...

that was my first reaction too casa, i wasn't sure if they were talking about 'fixing' the valley in terms of traffic or what

but the article seems to point out that the valley mall itself 'isn't working' for the shops around or something and they are looking at what they can do to the mall itself

still not sure how cars driving down it will help lol

I don't want to have to go to the city to watch a good fight at 3am on a Saturday.

Though in all my years I think I've only seen one fight in the mall and it was pathetic.

Part of the Valley's appeal is the melting pot that is the mall. See you Saturday night (well the Cabaret club anyway).

the mall is good and has been cleaned up heaps in the last 10 years. opening it to cars would be a step back imo

A bit off topic... but what happened to that gaming place that opened in the mall (I think it was the mall) - is it still there?

greedy property owners don't get enough loot from "beer barns" so they want to move the suits in. suits have the phat loots.

offices & businesses instead of concerts & gigs... just what brisbane needs.
