We've finally added an HTML5 video player, which means videos embedded on our news page and forums will play natively on devices like iPad, iPhones and Android devices.
We'll be rolling this out more widely over the next few days so videos on the home page as well as in news posts/forum posts should play natively for those of you that browse on mobile or on tablets. Here's a sample video: If people can try this out on their various devices and let me know if it doesn't work on anything that would be great. We've tested on all the usual browser suspects, as well as iPad 2, iPhone, Android 2.3.x and Android 4.x. |
Works well on Galaxy Nexus, Android 4.0.4. Am I meant to be able to full screen?
edit: works on default browser, but chrome beta does not want to full screen. P.S. Any chance you can get that video player to have a default background of black, not white/grey? It's really distracting on monitors (and now phones). |
works fine on my iPhone 4S and iPad 1 running 5.1.1
|
works fine on my ipad 1 and iPhone 4, both on iOS 5.x
|
Not working on my android 4.0.4 custom rom. It may be the stupid browser. I'll try a different one.
edit: Tried using dolphin browser and it didn't work. It comes up with a grey background with the little camera in the middle. last edited by Tollaz0r! at 16:15:23 05/Jun/12 |

also just running a stock SGS II with the Android 4.0.3
Tested in stock browser and all is well except the full screen doen't seem to work at all. There is a very slight change to the progress bar but thats about it. |
Not working on my iPod Touch 2G running iOS 4.2.1 (the last supported update). I get a poster frame with an overlay saying the file wasn't found/format not supported.
|
I don't know whether it's using HTML5 or flash but I can watch the video on my TF300T using whatever browser it comes with by default on Android 4.0.3

Not working on my iPod Touch 2G running iOS 4.2.1 (the last supported update). I get a poster frame with an overlay saying the file wasn't found/format not supported.Hmm, it might be that it just doesn't work on that. I have an old Touch lying around somewhere, I'll try that later. Sorry, I should have pointed out - full screen doesn't work on those embeds in some browsers - mostly Android/Chrome ones. It's a limitation of the core browser by the looks (YouTube videos also won't do it, I noticed). We'll probably just pull the fullscreen button. Thanks for the testings! edit: actually, some youtube ones can in some circumstances. Will look into it further! edit: #2 - oh, the ones that can go fullscreen are old-style embeds, not the new iframe embed. So yeh. |
HTC 7 Mozart = file runs fine (except cannot "resize-screen-on-the-fly" while file is playing) + file loops at end...
|
On my Macbook Pro, fullscreen has grey top and bottom borders rather than back (16:10 screen). Same in Safari, Chrome and FF. Perfect on the iPad 1.
|
iPad 2 latest OS. looks great.
now if you give me an xbox copy I'll tell you how that goes! |
In Chrome 19.0 with Flash blocked it asks to load the Flash plug-in rather than load the HTML5 viewer.Yeh, we decided in dev that the browser seems to know Flash is available so it doesn't actually load the HTML5 version. If you disable Flash in Extensions, it should work fine. On my Macbook Pro, fullscreen has grey top and bottom borders rather than back (16:10 screen). Same in Safari, Chrome and FF. Perfect on the iPad 1.Ta, we'll try and get rid of the grey borders! |
Works well on ipad 3 but the video is pretty low quality... Assuming just cos its a sample?
|
HTC 7 Mozart = file runs fine (except cannot "resize-screen-on-the-fly" while file is playing) + file loops at end... Yeah runs fine on mine, people always seem to forget about Windows Phone 7, they always say check on your iphone or android devices. |
- working fine on the iPad2 (Opera browser)
- plays fine on wifey's HTC Sensation phone - my poor old HTC P6500 downloaded it in Opera and WMP is now having a heart attack trying to play it. Poor old phone.. I think it's time to put her to rest |
Does the iPad browser show the HD option? I'm guessing not, which is why the quality of the 288p standard version would look glaringly low on the iPad 3's high res screen, rather than allowing them to flick on to the 720p HD version that PC users can.

No ipad doesnt let you choose the option :(
