Is there anything on it actually worth playing?

Edit: I don't mean that in a d***ish way (ok, well, maybe a little bit d***ish), I mean I love a new gadget as much as the next geek, I'm just genuinely wondering whether theres anything even on it worth playing. Cos the only thing that grabbed my interest was the uncharted game, but after reading some reviews it sounds like its not as good as the Uncharted games on PS3 so I may as well just go play those again if I want an Uncharted fix.

Prime? If so, jelly. Anyways, I've already been burnt by buying the 3DS on launch, not going to fall for it again with another handheld. Unless there are some games that are omg awesome, then I don't really see the point. I can play everything I have on my PS3 already, and I actually just bought Dark Souls so I'll be busy for awhile. Also they are pretty much in direct competition with smartphones, and they've got some pretty fun games to waste time on.

So really, is it worth getting over a smartphone that does the same, but also acts as a phone and has a larger library of games?

Really? That's weird. Pretty sure most apps on the market support the TF101. Unless they've upgraded to the prime and haven't allowed for earlier releases.

Does that include titles that were purchased through PSN?

I wouldnt worry about not getting the UMD Passport program, it was something like $10 per game transfer.

TufNut, I haven't been able to find any info on the prices for games on the PSN Store. Could you give a quick rundown on how much they're charging for the download versions of some of the launch titles?

i cant get on the store as it currently says "this service is not available in your country/region"

i think after what happened in Canada, they have decided to really lock it down.

How much are these things here? Also, I think with the PSP isn't there remote play, so you can stream your PS3 games across the net to it? I assume the same can be done on the Vita's 3G right, so you can play your ps3 games on it, in a way??

Remote play exists over here, unsure if they would have changed it for western release but highly doubt it since I believe the core platform is 100% identical

(which is why I'm also not so sure about your previous PSP to Vita complaint, but given that the linked account here is to a Japan PSN account I've got no way to confirm)

Here. While the japanese get the feature to transfer games was launched last year in japan, the NA release won't be getting it and thus we won't either. Also the aussie PSN store is stupidly restrictive with what games make it up for sale. Legend of Mana isn't on our store despite it being up for sale in the US for example.

There are 3 games I would consider "must haves" before i'd consider buying a vita and since they will never come to the aussie PSN store, I'll keep my $400+ thanks.

Yeah, that's why I'd import a japanese PSVita if I was to get one. It runs in native english, and you can access everything. Though I expect custom firmware to appear soon anyway.

Also Linker, JB HiFi have them for $348 with a starter kit.

If this has a good homebrew scene i'll prob grab one. Modding the psp was a lot of fun back in the day.

Also I don't get why people b**** about the price of these. An ipod touch 32gb is about the same price. An iphone is over double the price.

We've had one at work for a couple of weeks now. Thought the hardware was incredibly sexy, but the lack of software & the fact that you need a memory card/game card to do anything with it kind of sucks. Lack of software/appealing launch titles don't inspire me to want one, nor does the dropping of the UMD transfer program outside of Japan.

Yet that is still the competition. A smartphone still has handheld games, and Sony/Nintendo need to justify why you should get a handheld over using your smartphone for gaming.

Have you seen some of the games that are on the iOS or Android market though? Emulation is becoming pretty normal now, and with these phones holding 1.2 GHz dual core CPU's, it won't be long before they are really beefy.

Yes there will always be a market for handheld devices, because most of the time they operate at a higher standard, see the Vita being nearly as powerful as the PS3, but I'm talking game wise, which is where Sony really need to focus.

Yeah, I've bought s***loads of games for my Galaxy S II and Asus Transformer. Some of them are fantastic and perfectly suited to the device (Anomaly is a great example), but games like Shadowgun (basically a Gears of War clone) is just never going to play as well on a touch-screen. Emulators too, while they run really well, the on-screen buttons make most games a chore. There's no way you'd be able to play the new Resident Evil on 3DS (which is fantastic) on a mobile phone, at least not as they commonly exist today.

While the markets are certainly converging to a point, I just don't see mobile phones without any sort of gaming controls replacing proper handheld consoles for a while yet. The Xperia Play could very well be a glimpse of what to expect, but I doubt many people are going to sacrifice their sexy 7mm thick phone for a 1cm+ device with a gamepad. If "gaming phones" can't get a decent foothold, there is still a huge market for dedicated consoles.

In fact, the 3DS just became the fastest selling console in Japan's history (narrowly beating out the GBA) in terms of units sold in one year, and it doesn't even have a Pokemon game yet. The same goes for Australia.

absolutely true. i did root my transformer and got my PS3 controller working on it but its just not practical with out desk.. i can tell you it almost impossible to see anything on the screen of the SII in full sunlight (well that's been my exp.) where as the PSvita has an awesome screen, so do most dedicated consoles i would imagine.

Question about the vita. I know it's locked to 1 PSN account but is that account's region automatically dictated by the place you buy it? Or does logging into to an account for the 1st time do that? meaning if I buy an aussie vita can I log into my US account and then have it locked there?

If its anything like the PSP it wont get locked at all, you can just erase your account details and enter another one to start using it.

I have a PSP and can login to it with both US and AU PSN accounts, but it's really annoying switching between them.

With a release line-up about as strong. I've had a look over the games available now/at launch, and I can't see why you'd want to buy a PSV. In the case of the 3DS I only got it on launch because I knew Zelda was coming, but the release line-up alone would have made me give it a miss had it not been for Zelda and Mario Kart being due.

Escape plan is pretty fun, I get the impression though that its not very long. I haven't finished it yet, but it feels like I've already made a fair bit of progress into the game and I haven't been playing it long. I think a lot of the long-term lastability hinges on you wanting to reply the levels and get better scores or better times, but that sort of thing doesn't really appeal to me.

Lumines is a fun puzzle game, but I guess if you've owned an iteration of Lumines before in the past there might not be anything new. I never have had a lumines game before, so its new to me.

Yeah, but I already have an identity with my Australian PSN account. I already have games I've bought on there and my mates on my friends list. Swapping accounts on the PS Vita is a huge pain in the arse, especially when I can just import physical copies of games for about the same price as the US PSN store.

Im going to take a stab in the dark and assume that in japan the handheld market, especially the hype surround the PS Vita, would mean that the japanese sales of the PS Vita would economically allow for that kind of software to be realeased there (transfering of games) because the revenue of the handheld plus its new games would be enough to make a decent profit. In Aus and US etc. I think the handheld market is much smaller in comparison and thus just getting the PS Vita to sell and then getting people to buy games is a whole extra wall for Sony in terms of making a good profit.

Hence why they arent allowing people to transfer PSP libraries... it all comes down to $$$ i guess.
