Okay, so I've got my new TV, setup my PS3 with PlayStation Media Server on my computer, heap of movies to watch, and yet when I try to watch a movie 720p+ it starts to either stop/start or audio will lag out. I just tried connecting a cable to the PS3 and the router, but sadly that doesn't seem to help the issue.

So, what's the best solution? I'm not sure what CAT type this cable is, so would getting some CAT6 and hard-wiring it do the job? Or is there something else I could try? I also tried just putting it on a FAT32 USB but alas the PS3 doesn't play .mkv files via USB.

In my experience, 720p shouldn't even lag over wireless, so I doubt it's your network connection. Make sure you've got the media server set to only transcode audio when it's not in a PS3-friendly format and see if that helps.

I don't have it installed anymore, so I'm just working with screenshots of the application.

Firstly, under the Transcode Settings tab, click on MEncoder on the left, and check the "Switch to tsMuxer when H264 video is PS3 compatible blah blah blah."

If you have the PS3 connected to an AV receiver, go into the Common Transcode Settings (still under the same tab) and click "Remux when audio is AC3."

These two things should reduce the amount of transcoding your PC needs to do (letting the PS3 handle everything wherever possible), which will both reduce network bandwidth and give your CPU a break.

I'd also recommend cranking the transcode buffer up to the maximum amount, which I think is 600MB.

I'm going to bump this thread because I've now installed a Cat6 cable from my router to my PS3 in hoping that it would solve the issue of audio lag in anything 720p+. However, this has sadly not, and I'm at my wits end on what to do, or what could be the problem.

It was initially on a wireless connection, however I've now migrated to the aforementioned Cat6 cabling and yet it has made no difference.

Every time I try to play .mkv extension, it just lags out with audio or jolts while playing. I'm running the connection through a Billion BiPac 5200G which is what my PC is connected to as well.

PC specs are quite good, and I don't see it having any trouble with transcoding. As follows:

Intel i5 2500k
CoolerMaster V8 CPU cooler
Gigabyte GTX570 Factory OC
8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM
HDD that content is running off is 64mb 1TB Seagate 7200RPM

So I'm really boggled as to how I can improve playback quality, and any help would be appreciated!

All good now, switched to TVersity and used this guide http://forums.tversity.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=27398 and all works perfectly now. Yay 1080p is glorious.

i just bought a hdmi cable to connect my pc to my tv so i wont even need to use the ps3 for streaming anymore.
