Another new and rather intricate viral marketing campaign has made it's way online, teasing what is supposedly an upcoming game. A teaser trailer -- which has actually been on Youtube for a couple of weeks now, but only recently picked up by the media -- features a swag of recognisable B-list actors from popular TV shows including Lost, 24 and Alias and paints a picture of yet another dystopian USA future scenario.

The production values of the video itself are pretty low and reminiscent of the live-action cut-scenes from the Command and Conquer and Wing Commander games, however a link at The Escapist lists the game as an RPG and credits a marketing firm Fuel Change as its creator, so perhaps they know more than the rest of us.

An official website has also been established at america2049.com that sports only a countdown, set to zero on April 4 2011 PST. A whois lookup on the domain yields a connection to global human rights group breakthrough.tv.

Further, a mock search-portal site zooglio.com offers a whole new stack of links to other detailed sources of intel and propaganda related to the ad campaign. For a start, there's the opposing forces in the fictional conflict: The oppressive regime The Council On American Heritage and a resistance movement Divided We Fall. Then there's a fictional pharmaceutical company SerennCo who have patented "the first-ever sociopharmaceutical clinically proven to safely reduce aggressive behavior among the general population" as well as SMRTID, a citizen ID and tracking device.

Whether or not this actually pans out to be a high-profile game, or just some preachy human rights activism is anyone's guess, but we can't deny that they've deployed the viral marketing tactic quite well and our interests are peaked. Lets hear your guesses.

Hi, have just covered America 2049 for ARGnet so can give you a bit more information. It's an alternate reality game - an immersive 12-week episodic experience that will play out across a new social network as well as using video, fictional websites, and real life locations across the U.S.
