Microsoft Australia have just sent through a press release proclaiming the release of Internet Explorer 9:
As the only browser with fully hardware-accelerated HTML5 Internet Explorer 9 enables faster, more visually compelling web experiences and applications.

Microsoft said the Beta version of Internet Explorer 9 had been downloaded more than 40 million times, making it the most downloaded beta version of Internet Explorer of all time. Internet Explorer 9 has gained more than 2 per cent usage on Windows 7 PCs worldwide.
You can download it now (if you're running Windows 7, anyway) from beautyoftheweb.com.

If you upgrade, make sure you let us know what you think in the comments. How does it compare to the mainstays that most of us are using now like Firefox and Chrome?

It has add-ons, not sure how many have been developed for it though.

Just installed it now (want to check a few sites in it). Initial thoughts:

  • Like the minimal UI. More of this please, although I think this is as minimal as it gets without them using the title bar which IIRC is against MS development guidelines / rules.

  • Pinning websites to the task bar is awesome. I have a few regularly-used ones that this will be awesome for.

  • Seems quick. Chrome-quick? No idea.

Was just reading review here. Seems to hold up well vs the competition. Looks like the best IE has ever been.

Anyone know how to get IE9 to accept self-signed certs?! The old 'click to continue' is gone!

This could be a problem..

Yeh we have plesk set up for clients on a box, some of them use their own domains and ignore the SSL warnings.

Gonna be annoying when they upgrade and they have to buy SSL or use our URL. Also a few sites we do in dev don't always get certificates straight away, self-signed ones have their purposes ffs ><

Lightbox 2 overlays appear to be thoroughly broken in IE9, even on their own website. Apparently its relying on something broken in IE that is now fixed.

F***.

Not accepting 'bad' ssl certs will be a nightmare for network admins and the like, networking kit that use a webui is usually accessed over HTTPS with a self signed cert. There'll have to be an option somewhere to allow it.

Yeh its weird, one of our servers had the 'continue anyway' option and one didn't. Fortunately the one that didn't had a cert anyway... no idea.

Can somebody with both IE9 and Chrome installed check how comparably well this demo works in both?

Awesome thanks. Some html5 code I wrote about one and a half years ago worked great in FF and Chrome, but horribly in IE9 beta on a friend's comp a few weeks back. Not sure if anything significant has changed since then, or if the beta was up to date.

Similar speed but IE9 didn't seem to '3D' the labels on the ball.

Been using it since Beta (currently RC) so I don't expect the full release will be that much different for me.

Good, I f*****g hate those stupid new popup image viewer things the internet seems to have adopted.

edit: I just tried installing a certificate on my IE9, I have that click to continue to website option, then up top where the bar is red you just click on certificate errors & view -> install the certificate.

Why the f*** has microsoft moved the favourite icon to the top right of the screen! As i open tabs you have to move all the way across to the right rather than a very short movement to the left...

I guess its to keep the interface streamlined but why change something that works better.
