DICE have released the first gameplay teaser for the recently confirmed Battlefield 3. The trailer shows a bunch of very brief snippets of gameplay but is enough to set the scene.
Battlefield 3 leaps ahead of its time with the power of Frostbite 2, DICE’s new cutting-edge game engine. This state-of-the-art technology is the foundation on which Battlefield 3 is built, delivering enhanced visual quality, a grand sense of scale, massive destruction, dynamic audio and character animation utilising ANT technology from the latest EA SPORTS™ games. The experience doesn’t stop with the engine – it just starts there. In single-player, multiplayer and co-op, Battlefield 3 is a near-future war game depicting international conflicts spanning land, sea and air. Players are dropped into the heart of the combat whether it occurs on dense city streets where they must fight in close quarters or in wide open rural locations that require long range tactics.
Check it out below or click here for the HD option.

Battlefield 3 is due in Spring 2011 (U.S. Fall) for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and they've also opened pre-orders up; you get some DLC with it as a bonus if you pre-order now.

Looks amazing. Sometimes I wish I could go back in time 10 years and go, "yea this is what fps's look like now!", and blow my own mind.

Looks incredible in high res, in a way that won't look retroactively as bad as some other things that have "looked amazing" in the past (I have learned to not trust my initial wow factor in judging a game as near photo-realistic, and look for non-obvious flaws that later will be glaring, none jumped out at me in this).

edit: Though does make me wonder, how the soldiers serving in these situations feel seeing their likely most horrible moments turned into computer games...

I've been out of the battlefield scene since 1942 (and i don't mean 69 years ago) but i think i'm going to come back to the series with this one.

I would wait until they've confirmed the dedicated server situation before laying down any money. Of course, I'd wait until it was out and you'd read some critical reviews first too, but at the very least, you probably want to make sure that they're going to be using the same networking stuff as they have for previous games, otherwise it might be fundamentally different (I have no inside information at all on this at the moment, it's not the usual case where I'm under NDA and can't talk about it).

Yeh they are only going to improve from Bad Company 2

That actually looks rather cool, consider me adequately teased.

I couldn't really get into Bad Company 2 at all, I tried, and it seemed like a good game, but I just couldn't get into it. I think the last Battlefield game I actually played a lot of was Battlefield 2, so maybe this one will grab me the same way.
Midda

Khel, was that also the last FPS you got into? I haven't really heard to mention much about FPS at all for ages.
Khel
Posted 12:42pm 24/2/11
It would have been the last competitive FPS I put a significant amount of time into, like I played stuff like Left 4 Dead, but even then not a whole lot. Battlefield 2 would have been the last one I pumped serious amounts of time into.

All they really need to do is release a trailer with some more gameplay, and the Battlefield theme playing in the background, and I would buy it I think. I am a consumer whore.

Calling that a gameplay trailer is a bit of a stretch

and I seriously doubt their ability to make a multiplatform battlefield game without downscaling the PC version.

Sorry I coudlve sworn I saw the word "GAMEPLAY" featured in the title of that trailer. Lucky one of us can read.....
kappa

I assume he's talking about the teaser part. And there is gameplay in the teaser so what's the problem?
Crakaveli
Posted 01:50pm 24/2/11
And the next word is "teaser". This trailer has little glimpses of gameplay which are meant to "tease" us and make us want more.

They are working on two seperate versions of the game. One for PC, one for Consoles. I can guarantee you that there will be dedicated servers, either similar to BC2, or maybe BF2 style. They want to beat COD, and in order to do that, they need to be better then COD.

^^ ? We've had this discussion in a previous thread. they are rather different games at the end of the day, I don't see why they can't live a happy life together?

wow what a s*** trailer. im betting this game has nothing new to offer and still has that same crappy feeling to it like your fighting underwater like all the other BF games. BF1942 was a mind blowing experience when it came out. to bad the games have gotten steadily less and less impressive

They are different games I agree with you, but the normal person will play one or the other. EA are hoping to have more people play BF3 and hopefully break some sales records along the way, BF:BC2 is awesome and I still play it daily but it doesn't come close to the fun that was BF1942/2.

Shame that this is more like Bad Company 3 rather than Battlefield 3.
*Sigh* i'll go play my BF2 with Commander mode, 7 classes, 6 man squads, multi-air-vehicular combat, etc.
Have fun, suckers!

How do you know Battlefield 3 doesn't have that? Has there even been enough info released about it to make that call?
reLapse
Posted 07:35pm 24/2/11
Outside of them saying that there will be no commander mode there hasn't been any information released on the number of classes, size of squads and how they'll work.

Let's face it, commander mode was not an essential part to BF2 and doesn't deserve all the favour it receives.

pretty sure i remember reading in gameinformer that theyre sticking with 4 classes.
Eorl
Posted 09:21pm 24/2/11
They will most likely stick with 4, but I can't see them expanding. They made it 4 because that's really all that is needed. Besides maybe a Pilot class, that can get better stats when piloting.

I remember the gun animations looking like absolute s*** in 1942, didn't feel right.. BF2 was my first of the series and this game blew me away, 2 years solid of online gameplay, never a game has hooked me so much.

Just a teasing AusGamers nod guys, I'm in Seattle right now (seeing something out at Valve I can't mention for a few days), but heading to San Fran tomorrow, and on Sunday (US time, Monday for you), I'm checking out Battlefield at an exclusive event, replete with full interviews, so fill this thread with actual info you want, and I'll repeat it to DICE in the form a question ;)

I want to know if they're intending on keeping Bad Company and Battlefield as separate franchises that go in their own directions. Like, is Battlefield 3 an evolution of Battlefield 2, or is it an evolution of Bad Company 2.

^^ + 1 , I also wanna know if they'll be keeping Destro 2.0,adding to or even building a new one, allowing for even more kinds of destructive goodness :D

What's the difference? All my Battlefields are one big mush in my brain. I don't see any need for doing what you're suggesting.
Midda

The only real difference with Bad Company and vanilla Battlefield is the single player element, as far as I can tell.
Khel
Posted 02:41pm 26/2/11
Battlefield was on a larger scale than Bad Company was, you could have enormous maps, covering entire islands, with carriers out in the ocean supporting you, etc. It just had a sense of scale that Bad company didn't, Bad Company to me felt like Battlefield lite. Like, Bad Company (to me) felt more like the "you're a small group of elite dudes going into specific areas and achieving specific objectives", whereas Battlefield games were more coming from the direction of simulating full blown war and the maps and objectives and such had a much broader and more epic scope to them. Like in Bad Company you were the scalpel, making precision strikes, but in Battlefield you're a cog in a massive war machine that is grinding away as it invades an entire island/city/whatever.

And since all we've seen in pictures and snippets of gameplay is these tight quarters city maps with destructible buildings, i'm wondering, do we still get the epic scope of previous Battlefield games, or do we just get these close quarters, fast and frantic urban environments.

if they are in game, there's no way that's XBox footage.

I'm pretty sure it's gameplay, being a gameplay trailer. It also matches the screenshots from the Game Informer article that came out a few weeks ago.
