If you've been following coverage of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, you've no doubt seen these images around the traps either in one of those ye-olde print magazine thingos or from scans of their pages, but the digital source screenshots have now found their way online and you can check them out in 1280x720, right here on AusGamers.

Most of the characters and environments look like they're made of shiny plastic. It's not that bad, but it's still a bit distracting.

What's so special about this engine? If they were smart, they'd be using id Tech 5, since they own id Software now.

I think it is incapable of doing day/night cycles or somesuch due to using some rendering or shadowing method which I used to understand. To be honest I think they need better design before a more visually impressive engine, and animation, and characters, and world variety, and reduced cheese, and... stuff.
