Continuing their apparent roll as the mouthpiece of all new Elder Scrolls news, Gameinformer have
yet more details from the upcoming and hugely anticipated
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, this time looking into the revamped combat system.
It's all sounding just a little too tasty, with a new combat system that is reportedly inspired by BioShock's plasmid and weapon mechanic. The concept being that you're now able to equip items in either/or both hands and spell-casting is no longer off-hand. For example a fire spell in one hand and a sword in the other; a mace in one and a shield in the other or fire spell in one hand and lightning in the other.
In the article, Bethesda Game Director Todd Howard explains "We wanted to make it more tactile in your hands. I think if you look at our previous stuff I sometimes equate it to fighting with chopsticks – you sit there and swing them in front of yourself."
One of the more alluring changes to the spellcasting in Skyrim is how you can employ spells in different ways. For instance, you could blast enemies with a flame ball from afar, hold the button down to wield the spell like a flame thrower, place a rune on the ground to create an environmental trap that spontaneously combusts when an enemy steps on it, or equip the spell with both hands to deliver high damage fireball attacks that drain your magicka reserves quickly. The shock and frost spells give players an equal amount of flexibility.
Other changes and additions include finishing move animations, nerfing of the speed you can back-pedal in combat and a major buff to using daggers for stealthy back-stabbing and arrows for sniping. They've also done away with the Mysticism spell category, disseminating it's catalogue among the remaining five magic disciplines.
All this Gameinformer information continues to spill out while the rest of us continue to digest only one publicly released
screenshot and are still waiting for a trailer of some actual gameplay. Bethesda oddly seems to be sharing everything they can possibly divulge about the finer workings of the game through a single publication -- a strange marketing tactic which we really hope doesn't backfire on them and over-hype the game to Daikatana and Black & White proportions. The expectations that already weigh on a new Elder Scrolls title are lofty enough as it is. That said, it sounds damn cool. Hit up GI for the rest.

Really in the grand scheme of things the character modeling doesn't really phase me all that much. I mean, I play it for the narrative and the story, I think getting hooked up on the whole 'This guy has been animated wrong' really spoils what is trying to be achieved.
It will still be a well written game that is truly epic in scope and time required to play. =)

im guessing it will be more like the finishing moves in dragon age. they dont occur all that often, but when they do, they're f*****g awesome to watch.

How awesome were the finishers on the ogres? The whole 'jump in the air and stab in the face' thing looked f*****g wicked.

@mord, it's not getting hung up on the details more so that if the animations/models are bad, it will definitely detract from gameplay. You'll try to concentrate on story but then wonder why going backwards has the worse animation in history. Or being on a mount and wondering whether you f*****g the animal or riding.
