US Xbox Live Gold users have been given incentive to nag their friends into going Gold as well, with Microsoft offering upwards of five rewards per day if you can convince users to go from free members (or non-members) to Gold Members.

The scheme is only valid until July the 1st, but with some five rewards a day for the proactive sellers out there, subscriptions could take a massive hike. Here are the rewards on offer (from Joystiq):
  • Get your free member friend to go Gold and (1) you and your friend will each get 400 Microsoft Points* or (2) 600 Microsoft Points, depending on the active offer.
  • Get your free member friend to go Gold and (3) you and your friend will get a multiplayer Xbox Live Arcade game of Microsoft's choosing.
  • Get your free member friend to try Gold with a promotional token good for 1 month of Gold, and (4) if your friend redeems the token within 30 days, you'll get 200 Microsoft Points.
Apparently Microsoft are also going to be keeping an eye out for people making multiple accounts; using different email addys and the like to earn more points - if caught, you're out of the program. No word yet on whether or not this incentive will make it to Australia, but we've asked Microsoft, so stay tuned.

Microsoft are a bunch of thieving bastards, I bought a 1 month subscription in July last year and only found out last week that they had been auto-renewing it ever since and that the only way to cancel it was by ringing them up. That's $70 I lost for something I didn't want or use. Auto-renewing should be opt-in, not opt-out.

I don't know why they charge for a service that should be free, it's not like they need the money!

F*** Xbox Live. I'm not paying them so I can pay online. This is why I generally buy games I want to play multiplayer on the PS3 (though I don't really play many console games online anyway).
