The Nintendo World Spectacular event is taking place in Japan right now; a public showing off of their new 3DS handheld ahead of its February 26 launch date in the Land of the Rising Sun to not only give consumers a chance to play the machine and see what all the fuss is about, but also divulge some final specs regarding the DS's heir.

Apparently you're going to get a lower battery life out of the unit, which is somewhat anti-Nintendo and thus telling of just how crunching the internal hardware must be. It'll take some 3+ hours to charge the thing, and then depending on your screen brightness settings, you're likely to get anywhere between three and five hours of battery life (more if you're playing old DS games).

Moreover, the full launch day manifest of games in Japan has been revealed, with eight titles in total, though that number will grow as the year progresses; Nintendo have revealed a lot of third-party support for the game. We'll likely only see a few of these launch titles, and a Western-specific press conference for the handheld takes place in the US on the 19th of Jan (20th here), so stay tuned for details from there, but here is a list of the games releasing on day one in Japan:
  • Nintendogs & Cats
  • Winning Eleven Soccer 3D (PES)
  • Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition
  • Samurai Warriors: Chronicle
  • Puzzle Bobble 3D
  • Ridge Racer 3D
  • Battle of the Giants: Dinosaurs 3D
  • Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle
It's good to see solid games across various genres out of the gate for the system, especially with the likes of Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition and Professor Layton. Like I said though, stay tuned for more details as we close in on Western-specifics for the Nintendo 3DS, right here on AusGamers.

I'm really keen and will probably want one, but I want Nintendo to hurry up and announce an AUS price point.

Have they got a price for the Japanese release?

Not bad, I'd pay that.

However, the only game in that launch lineup that appeals to me is Street Fighter 4, and I've already bought that game twice. Not going to get it a 3rd time. I'll be waiting until there's a more substantial games lineup.

as much as i'm excited about the 3DS, even more exciting is the fact that (in theory) the 3DS's release should push Sony to get their Psp2 (Playstation phone whatever) out faster.

The phone and the PSP2 are different products.

A bit of a lacklustre launch lineup, but Professor Layton games are always pretty good, thats about the only one I could see myself interested in. I'm suprised theres no first party heavy hitters in there, like a Mario game or a Zelda game.

Yeah, I assumed there'd at least be the Ocarina of Time remake in there. How much work would they really be doing on that game?

If that's the entire launch lineup, this has gone from a day-one purchase to a 'wait-and-see' for me.
