Ea and DICE have just announced 3 new expansions for their modern FPS Battlefield 3, the ground breaking Frostbite 2.0 powered military shooter with ultimate destruction levels.
The first DLC pack is called
Close Quarters.
The HD Destruction in Close Quarters lets players riddle the environment with bullets, reducing entire locales to ruin. Everything from furniture to plaster can be shot to pieces, and players can see the result of the mayhem as rubble and broken pieces pile up on the floor.
The tight level design and many opportunities for vertical gameplay mean players will need to bring their A game if they want to stay alive in this highly competitive theater of war.
This fall will also bring the expansion pack Battlefield 3: Armored Kill. Featuring all-out vehicle warfare with new tanks, ATV’s, and mobile artillery, it also includes the biggest map in Battlefield history. Come winter, it is time for the fourth expansion pack Battlefield 3: End Game.
Two other DLC packs
have also been named, with one being held tightly under wraps, and the other being all about vehicles and large maps.
Battlefield 3: Armored Kill – Following the tight infantry gameplay of Battlefield 3: Close Quarters, DICE will release Battlefield 3: Armored Kill that ups the ante for vehicular mayhem as only Battlefield can do. Featuring new driveable tanks, ATVs, mobile artillery and more, Battlefield 3: Armored Kill also delivers huge battlefields for an all-out vehicle assault, including the biggest map in Battlefield history.
Battlefield 3: End Game – The fourth expansion pack will ship in the winter but details remain tightly guarded.
What is sounding like some really solid DLC, it seems EA and DICE are pulling out the big guns, so make sure you keep an eye on AusGamers where we will have all the latest news.
Battlefield 3: Close Quarters will be available on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 June 2012. More information is due to be released on March 13.

Why? If these expansions give players a good, decent amount of action for a cheaper price then CoD's lol4maps than I think we have a winner.

expansion packs are the ultimate annoyance for stealing cash.

Agree.
Agree.
For me, i dont care (at all) about achievements, i dont use vehicles (apart from riding in 1 to go from A to B) and the guns are pretty much all the same anyway IMO. New maps are cool but i bought my original BF3 game CD key for approx $25, and now they want approx $20 for karkand (which to me is just another 4 maps) and now even more DLCs. For fans i can understand the joy of new maps and weapons and if i loved the game i would be all over this but i think DLCs are an easy cash in on s*** that used to be given for free. Didnt COD 4 and 5 get free map packs in the patches?
In particular, the first DLC mentions destructible environments something that i loved in BFBC2 but think is really lacking in BF3 and should have been included from the start or at least added in with a patch.

Yeah, theres some companies that use DLC as a way to screw more money out of people and go about it in really dodgy ways (Capcom, I'm looking at you), but thats not ALWAYS the case, theres tonnes of games that have had really good DLC that was well worth the few dollars it cost.

Haha I know. But I'll keep using it until they do.

This is spot-on. If you want to rail against publishers charging money to unlock integral parts of the game that are either A) Already on the disc, or B) Downloadable content that _should_ have been shipped with the main product, that's fine. But give credit where credit's due. Learn to look at things objectively, rather than painting anything marketed as "DLC" with the same, s***-smeared brush.
Battlefield 3 (and these expansions) do not fall into that category. It shipped with a massive array of weapons, a great assortment of maps, and even a free expansion (when preordered) offering more guns and more maps. This is brand new content, actual extra content that will supplement the already excellent, complete game nicely. You have to decide whether or not you will fork out your hard-earned for these features or not obviously, but it certainly doesn't fall into the same category as Oblivion's horse armour, stupid weapon skin packs, short extra 'missions' that cost far more than they should etc.
Get a f*****g grip.

I certainly dont think BF3 DLC is as bad as other DLCs out there but i prefer the good old days where IMO expansion packs warranted the extra cash, i dont think DLCs such as BF3's warrant more than say $5-10 given that weapons are really just a change of skin and slight stat changes. Im all for new maps but when the gameplay is lacking, i dont want more maps.
As i said, if you love BF3 i can see the appeal of these DLCs and think they are money well spent.

I would bundle them all together (or just the first 2) and call it an Expansion, and charge a reasonable price for an expansion.
DLC is continuing to new levels of shame every couple of months it seems and is fast becoming a dirty word. I wouldn't use it if I had the choice, particularly after the Capcom debacle.

$24 is a simple money grab, had the pack been $5 (which EA/DICE would still have made money on) there would be less resentment
i'll not buy the DLC's till the price is fairer, will i b**** and complain about it, no,

Downloadable content is just a more efficient way of delivering an expansion and although it means that developers can be flexible with the amount of content they provide and the frequency that they provide it, recent trends are seeing a shift towards less frequent meatier releases with most games.

Why is it a rip? DLC for games like Mass Effect 2, Fallout 3, Alan Wake, Burnout Paradise, Mortal Kombat all was pretty awesome. I'm sure theres many otheres but thats just the ones I remembered off the top of my head, but all that DLC was stuff made above and beyond the original game that really added to it. I'd imagine we'll get some pretty cool DLC for Skyrim too at some point.
Yeah theres a few rotten apples in there, and they're at risk of spoiling the whole bunch, but theres still a lot of times where DLC is good.

Most DLC that I know of don't really do this. Skyrim's DLC will also have a good sized DLC I hear.

If it adds a decent amount of content and isn't just 'lol-horse armour', then I'm all for it. However on-disc, day 0 DLC can go get screwed royally.

Heh, Railworks 3: Train Simulator has $1744.08 worth of DLC. Though that's an exception to the DLC rule, because that is digitalising train collection, a very large hobby and a very old one as well. A lot of people will spend a great deal of money on limited edition trains etc, so making them cheaper and digital was a great way for collectors to experience it all.
