The recent rumblings from the EA machine have materialised as Battlefield Play4Free has now been revealed. While a formal announcement still appears to be forthcoming, the veil over an official website
battlefield.play4free.com has been lifted to offer a teaser trailer featuring in-game action from the new FPS that bears a striking resemblance in many ways to the acclaimed Battlefield 2, to be released -- as the name suggests -- under a free to play business model.
We'll have more details once an official presser finds it way out, but until then check out the teaser trailer
here on AusGamers and stop by the
official site for a couple of screenshots.

Furthermore, I'm not sure I understand the point of this whole affair. So this is supposed to be one of those games where you're buying in game items with real credit, EA points or w/e? Just seems like a waste of time D:

CoD Pay2Play. I'm totally against the Pay2Win business model.
(I think this has be discussed but it would have to be one deep ass MMO to justify it.)

What concerns me about this release is the apparent lack of new content. Game design and maps are recycled from BF2, sounds from BC2, etc. I suspect it may prove little more than an elaborate advertising strategy for Battlefield 3.
But hey, it's free. You get your money's worth.

Seems like releasing the older version of the game for free will still capture a chunk of the market, and then you can drive people to the premium version of the game - ie Bad Company 2 in this case....
I'm sure there will be advertising of some sort in the game too - they will probably make a bucketload off this idea.

Yeah but the difference is that CoH Online has a huge amount of new content and such, It's not just a 5 minute hackjob for cash.

surely only suckers fall for games that require you to keep spending money to keep playing

The whole idea of BF is to EARN your weapons, NOT pay for them.
