Yesterday marked the 25th birthday of Nintendo's iconic Mario, but we were en-route to his homeland of Japan (or is that the Mushroom Kingdom), so haven't had a chance until now to let you know about it.
There are plenty of ways to celebrate. Put down the Wii controller and dust off your NES and plug it in to see if it works, watch the awful Bob Hoskins-starring Mario movie, read the awesome "Game Over" by David Sheff, watch the somewhat jarring (and stereotyped) Mario cartoon series ("Hey Paisano!"), or run through a well-presented history of the mustached platforming hero as supplied by Nintendo of Australia.

As it says on the website, the anniversary is 25 years of "Super Mario Bros", which started on September 13, 1985 (almost exactly 25 years ago) with Super Mario Bros on the NES.
