There's a bit of contention about the interwebs regarding freedom of speech and improper, insensitive conduct, which came to an embarrassing point for Microsoft, who enforce the latter on their Xbox Live service, when they banned a user whose profile listed his location as "Fort Gay".

The thing is, said user, Josh Moore, actually lives in Fort Gay, West Virginia in the United States, and according to a report over at V3D, it took some convincing to get the mega publisher to realise he was speaking the truth, though he did suffer his account being banned and Microsoft being pretty narky about it before they realised their mistake.

"I figured, I'll explain to them, 'Look in my account. Fort Gay is a real place'," Moore says. "I told him, 'Google it — 25514!', he [just] said, 'I can't help you'."

The full story can be found on the above link.

Whilsts it prety gay that microsoft ban people for this gay s***, its easy to tell why the are so gay.

One of the key features of a microsoft console is parental control and how family friendly live is (infact thats a sales point for live)

What the gayest thing about all of this is the gay hoops he had to jump through to get the gay error fixed.

its pretty silly banning the word gay when it has more than 1 meaning... not to mention actually being names of places and people.

I think this needs an updated Downfall video.

I'm sure its already been made.

don't lose sight of the situation though; Microsoft are attempting to avoid opportunities for discrimination across a service they supply and maintain for everyone. I respect their 'good intentions', it's just short-sighted to be so totalitarian about it; there needs to be more of a case-by-case scenario involved with situations like this, instead of being outright dismissive

didnt they also ban people at one stage that listed themselves as being gay and lesbian in their profiles?

Agreed, policies should be guide-lines, not across the board rules.

I've put my MSN status to similar things in the past, usually when something in msn or hotmail screws up or they add a feature I don't like.

Yeah, if it was Apple they'd have told him to move to somewhere more normal sounding.

A bit of a failing in the process. Not being given the language in context will lead to this sort of situation again and again.

Doesn't "gay" also mean happy??

Also there is an ice cream called "gaytime", tastes good though believe it or not

I wonder if gay is in the BC2 swear filter?? I know if you type "damn" the swear filter picks it up.. wtf shizzle gay?!?!?!?

Gay is definitely filtered in Starcraft 2 if the language filter isn't disabled.

Or at least I think it still is, it was in the beta, can't say I've ever said gay in the final game... dammit their plan worked!

I got banned from internode for saying lemon party once, and it was totally innocent in context.

pretty much everything is filtered in bad company 2. I never understood why they filtered swearing out of M rated games, especially BC2 considering the in game team automatic team chat thing swears like a trooper.

or "you're not banned, you're just holding your controller wrong".

Yeah those gaytime ice creams are pretty damn tasty but nowhere near as tasty as I remember them being. I swear they've changed :(

Same, I asked an internode admin once and he said some bulls*** about there servers being family friendly and open to everyone. I then asked why they have so many nazi rules and he didn't reply.

The line from 30 Rock "it wouldn't be a Lemon party without old D***" comes to mind :)

^^ actually lemon party, goatse, tubgirl were all auto bans I think. It was because everyone would direct noobs to those URLs when they asked for help on how to rescue hostages or whatever.

The worst part is it also filters out normal words with bad words in them, like back in cs you couldn't say cs_assault because it had "ass" in it.

I wonder how long until MS bans my live account for having a "bad name" then if they're so damn strict about it, unless they haven't caught on yet. :ninja:
