A patent from Microsoft relating to their controller-free gaming system, Kinect, has revealed that it will also be able to recognise American Sign Language (or ASL), allowing deaf or mute people to potentially join in chats across Xbox live, or more. According to reports, anyone proficient in ASL will even be able to input phrases.
Where the language is ASL, the gesture may be a single letter or number, or a word or even a full expression or phrase, as is allowed by the language. ASL has the advantage of having a large number of people who are already facile in using it. To that end, a user who is facile in ASL will have an easy time inputting characters to a system that accepts ASL gestures as input
Pretty cool that gaming is opening up to disabled people more and more, and a system like this is a great indication of gaming's growth of inclusion.

Thanks to kinect even deaf people can be obnoxious, hate filled trolls now. Wonder what the sign language for "owned you f**" is.

F*** off kinect.

Gaming is like politics, years of campaigning before release and then nothing afterwards but broken promises and fail. It's hard not to be cynical. If only the publishers would spend as much time supporting s*** post release as they do marketing the crap out of it during the pre release phase we MIGHT ACTUALLY SEE SOME QUALITY. I don't want to know what hypothetical bulls*** your hardware is capable of because chances are on release that it won't even do half the s*** you said it would!

At first thought it seemed pretty cool, but on second I'm not really seeing the point unless it's soley for teaching people ASL.

If it's for deaf people to chat easier while they're playing a game, would dropping the controller to sign stuff be just as difficult as typing words on the chatpad? And at least with typing, you can construct proper sentences, whereas wouldn't a ASL to text translation sound a bit grammatically silly? Killed You New Player Suck Reproductive Organ!

Yeah, ust not really getting the point. ASL is meant as a substitute for verbal communication, which isn't a necessity online.

haha that would be so funny if they did filter it or it didn't quite work properly like the hilarious youtube auto caption function where you get some weird closed captions.

Isn't the idea of kinect that you don't need a controller to play games?

The patent mentions lip-reading, so if Kinect is on, in theory if you're playing an MP game with an actual controller, you should be able to mouth words or phrases to appear as chat or whatever... I'm not certain as to how it works, but in all seriousness, at least they're broaching hurdles for people with disabilities. I don't really understand why everyone is so dismissive - this is inclusive, and may actually work. Save the b****ing until it's proven to actually fail - but I for one am pleased we're reaching a point where people who were not always able to fully enjoy all of gaming's pleasures (such as trash-talking), are being taken care of - even if it is only on paper at the moment

I think the idea is more microsoft trying to appeal to parents with lazy fat kids and to keep up with the wii to get people exercising. No longer are nerds scrawny, lanky teenagers sitting at a PC for hours on end but they're now obese 6 year olds sitting at their consoles for days on end.

That and yeah to make a more immersive gaming experience where YOU are the controller, although from the videos I've seen of it being demoed it seems to have quite a bit of lag associated with it so I don't know how effective it'd be for fast paced games where milliseconds matter. One guy said the prompt on the screen to jump in wii sports microsofts sports game didn't coincide with when the guy playing it said he thought he should jump to get over the hurdles.

but I for one am pleased we're reaching a point where people who were not always able to fully enjoy all of gaming's pleasures (such as trash-talking)

so coma patients then? what's wrong with trash talking using a head set if you're disabled (though how the f*** you're gonna use a kinect anyway is beyond me) or a keyboard if you're deaf?

I'm more interested in how it knows whether there's a girl of a boy in front of it (which it apparently does). Does it use the same sort of xray body scan thing the airports use and if you've got a dingleberry it goes yep dude? or does it work on body shape? I can't wait for the abusive posts on the xbox forums to start rolling in with "kinect gave me a girls avatar BUT I'M A GUY".

Um sign language is pretty fast and hard to see for ppl who don't have a clue like me... I really doubt but also really hope that Kinect is that accurate.

Don't think it will be able to track this... http://motocross.transworld.net/1000099623/news/transworld-shadow-ashley-fiolek/
