Brink is one of the last bastions of hope for the hardcore PC gamer; in a world that is becoming increasingly dominated by consoles and lousy PC ports, the days of the old fast-paced PC FPS games almost appear to be coming to a close sometimes.
The new E3 trailer starts off with the character customisation, then some weapon customisation before launching into gameplay proper. There's some example footage of interacting with various parts of the environment in addition to the actual running around and shooting. The trailer gives you a feel for Splash Damage's typical objective-based approach to multiplayer game design as well, showing team members performing certain tasks and the audio cues you get when control points change hands.
As always you can download the
HD version or
stream the low quality one if you're running low on bandwidth.

Honestly how often does the PC port of a game have more controls. Just today I downloaded the MoH 'beta' if you can even call pre-order extras a beta and it not only does not have lean in the control list there is nothing bound to Q & E by default. Does Bad Company 2 use Q & E for anything? If so i imagine it will be similar.

Do you get paid to spout this crap? That whole video looked like a slow, generic and quite frankly boring looking console game.
Seriously, what kind of selling point is "audio cues you get when control points change hands" ??!
Posted 07:56pm 18/6/10
Besides, I dunno if you just played CSS or what else your limitations may be, but people that like multidimensional objective-based FPS games actually like knowing when things are happening that are more complicated than "the other team planted the bomb".

I don't mind lean, but can live without it because it keeps gameplay faster (less camping around corners). But as a snipey lamer, I get a lot of benefits from it so if it's there, I'll use it.
I agree Brink looks a little slow - the average run/movement speed seems slow but there's an occasional sprint, so I'm not sure if that is an actual sprint, or a run and everything else is walk. I like how it borrows climbing over obstacles from Urban Terror (one of the greatest FPS games/tac shooters ever made, IMO) - it reminds me a lot of UT in some ways. I have faith in this not playing as slow as it looks - UT always looked a little slow until you played it and s*** went crazy and crap was flying everywhere - man I loved that game.

I'd like to see a Mirrors Edge, parkour style team deathmatch game. I think it'd be great for capture the flag style play.

... trolling?
Posted 08:44pm 18/6/10
Also he was using a controller and not really doing much besides looking so that doesn't help it look fast.
Also I love the idea of how you see how much exp you are getting. 1 bullet seems to be 1 or 2 exp per hit so you see a constant stream of the stuff. Could be just me though.

You can check out how cool you look while you're doing it !!!11oenone How long before they're whoring the whole microtransaction model for item upgrades and magical flying horses for your next level of XP? The whole minute intro showing how cool it was to paint a clown face on some guy though was really fascinating.
Ignoring your attempt at a high-brow gaming diss, how is something like "Brothers, the enemy is stealing one of our command posts!" so good compared to any other vox objective announcement in any other objective based FPS game? You can't even see who or when it happened, there's no log or history or visual indication of how long it will take them to steal it or what's happening. Hell, you can't even see where the command post is located.
Also, how is the game multidimensional? TBH, it looked fairly linear. They got to some tunnel, clicked "A" to complete quicktime like objective and then the door closed behind them and they moved along.
Don't get me wrong, I love a good team based fps. Everything from quakeworld to bfbc2 (even when other people don't like them so much aka mw2) but this just smells too much like a game being sold on marketting. All it needs is peter molyneux in here claiming something revolutionary and you'd have a winnar.
Posted 09:22pm 18/6/10
The same could be said about nearly every team based FPS out there. Look at TF2. How much more linear do you want to get? I don't get why linear is a bad thing now days. Not every game can be a massive GTA4 sized sandbox and for multi-player unless you have an absolute massive player cap like MAG, then what's the point of it? TF2 is what game devs should be trying to replicate when it comes to team FPS games IMO. 3 years later and they are still supporting it and it's still popular as ever. Brink comes about as close as i've seen lately to that from a first glance. I could be quite wrong though. Time will tell.

No, the truth.
F*** iron sights.

There appears to be some confusion based on me saying "last bastions of hope for PC gaming". I'm not saying this is revolutionary or ground breaking or anything. Quite the opposite - I'm saying it's a PC game that is, by all reports, based on the tried, tested and trusted Ye Olde Modele of the classic FPS games. It'll have dedicated servers. It'll be moddable. It'll have map editors. There'll be competitive game play modes. All that s*** that we used to take for granted because, well, it would be f*****g stupid not to include if you wanted to make a game that people would play for years, that we no longer get.
Looks like I'm alone in longing for the glory days. I was pretty depressed when looking up CSS stats today to see that MW2 is the 2nd most popular PC game on Steam. The market has spoken and I guess the new order is here to stay
Posted 10:32pm 18/6/10
That pretty much what i thought while watching this, it really does have a TF2 feel, a bit more depth but same sort of formula, sadly for me TF2 was unable to hold my interest.
Nah, Rage is the borderlands mod :P
Posted 10:32pm 18/6/10
I'm with you on that. Bring back the quake days I say. When games had health meters and crouching behind boxes for a few seconds didn't regenerate all your health. When you could carry a truck load of weapons and reloading weapons didn't exist. Long as this game has good dedicated server support (AvP had DS's too and look how well that turned out) i'll be all over this
Posted 10:39pm 18/6/10
Hell no Trog, I think the glory days were the best for sure but I was just saying this does not have a PC look about it, maybe I'm getting too old. I didn't know it would have dedi, editors and mod support, that's sweet but is all but a confirmation that it will use a microtransaction model (is this confirmed?)
As for the stats, if you take away the IWnet s*** MW2's game play is solid. The lack of mod support is just to cut the games life span for the next COD.
Posted 10:41pm 18/6/10
I expected blisteringly fast deathmatch, with people exploding all over the place, flicking around to check over your shoulder because you hadn't looked there in the last 5 seconds and there's bound to be a rocket coming for you, not something that could've been a scripted single player FPS scene on a console.

The other thing to remember - if they'd made a video like that with heaps of flicking around it would be basically unwatchable and too confusing for most people

I'm no fan of it either. It's here to stay though since "realism" trumps fun these days it seems.

Posted 05:54pm 20/6/10
They block half your screen - oh but that's a trade off for accuracy you say, but games that use them you have zero accuracy when not using them so it's not really a choice if you are further than point blank.
"shooting from the hip"(which iron sights is supposed to counter) is a bulls*** concept - show me a swat guy walking around with his mp5 "at the hip", afaik they hold them at their shoulder.
Really? Try playing a game that uses them just using the spray'n'pray method.
Besides it's not just "spray'n'pray" that's affected when you cannot fire a single accurate shot without raising the iron sights.
Also you get stupid s*** like i remember in the cod games, you shoot an enemy, they drop to the ground "great they are dead" you think, but no hidden behind the huge drawing of a gun they are just getting ready to shoot you as soon as you turn to your next target.
Posted 05:58pm 20/6/10
The best execution I've seen was True Combat which had it nailed.

Holding a rifle at your shoulder, is TO USE THE F*****G IRON SIGHTS.
F*****g retards i swear.
Posted 07:27pm 20/6/10
My point was c***'s dont fire from the hip at all, so any time you fire (if you are going for realism) you would be using the sights, so to differentiate between the firing from the hip and iron sights in the name of realism is stupid.
F*****g retards I swear.
Posted 07:39pm 20/6/10
Posted 08:27pm 20/6/10
Now you are saying that firing from the hip is retarded because everyone should be using iron sights?
Gee Gee good sir i need a bottle of scotch to be happy around you.
Posted 08:36pm 20/6/10
Sure have my player model look down his sights, but dont block half my screen with a gun model and dont make me press a button to "bring up my sights" as they should be up all the time.

So go back to counter strike.
Realism is fun imo, I hate illogical fantasy bulls***. Needs to be believable, if you can't use iron sights... the issue is at your end.
lolwut, are you serious? The mental image of this is hilarious!
