As cheesy as they were, the Mortal Kombat films are still heralded among the best video-game to movie adaptations. But even though the popularity of the games has burned down to a dull flicker, it looks like there's still a few people out there who want to have another crack at bringing the great tournament back to the big screen.

A new live-action short found it's way online today and given the timing, many blogs assumed it was a teaser promo for an upcoming game. It has since been all but officially confirmed however, that the clip is actually a test-short intended to sell the idea of a "Hard-R" rated Mortal Kombat flick to Warner Bros.

According to movie-blog Latino Review:
  • The short was directed by Kevin Tancharoen, who did the remake of Fame last year. Judging from this short, Kevin is the perfect director for this movie.
  • Jacks is played by Michael Jai White. Michael played Spawn and was in Undisputed II. Michael makes a great Jacks (Jax).
  • Sonya Blade is played by Jeri Ryan, who played Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Voyager.
  • Baraka was played by the very talented Lateef Crowder, who plays the Brazilian fighter in Undisputed III.
  • Scorpion is played by Ian Anthony Dale. Ian plays Kazuya in the upcoming big screen version of Tekken.
  • Johnny Cage was played by up and coming martial arts sensation Matt Mullins.
  • Still working on who played Reptile. Will update when I find out.
  • The fight choreography was done by Larnell Stovall. Larnell did the fight choreography for Undisputed III and is one of the best fight choreographers in the business. You want to see the fights you deserve? Then you fans should DEMAND he be the guy in one charge for this reboot.
The short is cheesy as ever, but if there's one thing that could have instantly improved the original MK movies, it's more gore and a proper adult rating.

Check out the short below or hit up our files library for the HD 720p or 1080p downloads.

Rather than lock a thread with actual discussion already in it, can you edit and promote? Is it hard to do or something? Or lock the news item and link to the discussion thread (seen that done too).

It just makes it a bit awkward to reply to people on the topic once its locked.

No metal arms is a bit weird but looks awesome :)

I found it a bit cheesy when they dropped the MK names of people in there, but I guess they had to do that since it was only a short and they didn't have time to spend making the introductions more subtle. But still awesome.

Something could happen to Jax in this film, meaning that if it does well, he'll have metal arms for a sequel.

Looks pretty awesome though. It's still a bit cheesy, but in a good way. Sif show Johnny Cage being killed in the teaser though. Johnny Cage is awesome. :(

this isnt an preview from the movie, just a test to see if its worth doing a reboot movie. so if they do go ahead with a film, it will probably have a diff storyline to this short film.

From Jeri Ryan's twitter -
Okay, so... Mortal Kombat. It's not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film. More MK FAQs: I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB's reaction to it was. And I'm not sure how you can contact WB to push them to make it. But you guys are resourceful...! ;-)

Jax didn't get metal arms until MKIII so it makes sense that he doesn't have metal arms in the new movie.

I wish this was the real thing, I doubt Warner brothers will take it as is, if at all.

I like the reimaginings that was used in this.

The general reaction to this has been "holy f*** that is awesome" so I don't see why WB wouldn't. Unless they have come down with a sudden crippling fear of money and success

Near the end of the test/trailer/movie thing, when Scorpion is looking at the photos in the Sub-zero file, there was a quick flash of something, and I didn't quite catch what it was, so I played through it again and paused it on that part. Looks like its a picture/concept for sub-zero, and it looks pretty sweet. I print screened it and saved it, this is what it was.

The first one was ok, the second was retarded, and is at the bottom of the barrel of video game movies, along with uwe boll crap.

F*** yeah!

That trailer thingy looked f*****g bad-ass. Michael Jai White is perfect as Jax and iit would be awesome to see Matt Mullens on the same side as him. Even though the story is nothing like the game it still looks like it would be f*****g cool if they go down this path.

yeah that was probably my favourite fight aswell martz

they definitely need more special moves in this next one, i know that isn't easy to do to be real but lui kang needs to be doing fire balls and s***

probably the biggest let down with the first original movie was the lack of real special moves from lui kang/sonya/johnny cage

also is that all we're going to see of johnny cage in that movie? so he's just dead from the get go?

also f*** me raiden better do something in this movie. probably the most annoying bit of the first movie that raiden did f*** all as some guide bulls***

Like someone else said, this is just a test that the director made to get Warner Brothers interested in the concept, when/if it gets made into a full thing, none of that footage would probably even be used. At least I hope thats the case, because sif kill Johnny Cage like that.

I hope theres still a bit of a mystical angle to it, even if its grounded and gritty and gory and all the other g-words that are popular in movies these days, I hope they still have a bit of the mystical stuff, cos that kinda was a big part of MK.

I think the biggest challenge for the movie is to outdo the previous sountracks for the MK Films.

Or do a new mix for the old theme song. :)

Posted 08:40pm 09/6/10
It looks like they've spent a fair bit of money making that so it would be pretty disappointing for it not to happen. I really liked the dark gritty look of it. If they could get the fight scenes looking like the ones from Blood and Bone they would be onto something special.

Posted 09:15pm 09/6/10
How was that at all cheesy?

As mentioned, the way Jax introduced each of the characters was pretty cheesy. I imagine in the actual film (provided it actually gets made), they won't just be like "this guys codename is such-and-such." They need proper introductions.

chill out, sweetheart. was just pointing it out for the people who didn't know.

also 4-2 ain't so bad for someone who started without much serious mma training but he isn't exactly ufc material as history has shown. there are definitely better heavyweights around, can't wait until brock comes back!

Hot damn!!

That trailer was awesome. As people have the darker grittier looks suits it so well.

I didn't think the trailer was cheesey at all, intro couldn't have been different for each character rather just say code names. Makeup looks mad as did fight scenes.

I was thinking Johnny cage was gonna do his super kick when he took a puff of that pipe..
