Ubisoft sends word that their online game store and distribution platform -- previously only available in Europe and North America -- has now opened it's virtual doors to Australian customers www.ubishop.com.
UBIShop allows the purchase of downloadable versions of its PC games, with the intent of offering boxed products for console and PC, as well as merchandise, in the near future. The aim of UBIShop is to offer Internet users special e-commerce access to the full catalogue of Ubisoft games and a large range of newly released products. UBIShop is designed to be an online meeting point for fans of Ubisoft around the world.
Unsurprisingly, the pricing is in-line with the usual Australian regionalised retail prices. As an example, the recent Splinter Cell: Conviction for PC can be found for AU$89.95, whereas over on the equivalent US UBIStore, the same game goes for US$59.95 (~$70.94 based on today's exchange rate).

There is however an introductory offer valid until June 14 2010, where buying any full price game will net you one of their budget games (which appears to include a bunch of highly-regarded classic Ubisoft titles) free of charge.

Check it out for yourself over at www.ubishop.com

fans of Ubisoft

Do they have any left after their s***** DRM f**fest? Seems like a waste of time to me. If I wanted to buy a game online i'd get it through steam.

eww it wont take off, well not in Australia. I for one love steam because i hate storing CD's and its easy to download them unmetered. Most Australian ISP (good ones) have Steam unmetered so why someone waste half their cap on game... i know i wont.

So what you realy mean is they took away the restriction that was stopping people from using the store from anywhere and just paying the same USD value everywhere. Now we get the priveldge of using the store, but paying inflated prices because our IP address is Australian.

Apparently they have the internet on computers now.

At least you pointed out the price rip-off trog.

I avoid Ubisoft at all costs. Regardless of what they make. I don't agree with their business decisions. DRM is one example. Killing Kinq's Quest fan made game is the other.

Unless they removed their DRM I don't think this was newsworthy :p

So wtf happens when you dont buy their EDS crap? So if you have to reinstall for whatever reason you're f***ed? Or do they let you download it for a year and then you have to pay for the privilege of being able to access it for a longer period?

I'm wondering that too. If your download screws up (internet drops out, file is corrupt, whatever), does that mean you won't be able to redownload it unless you paid the $12 ranso...extended download service? I think it's funny that I could buy a boxed copy of any game on their store at a different online store (or eBay) plus shipping for cheaper than that crap. Hell, it would cost me less to go to a brick and mortar store and buy a boxed copy than it would to buy on there (especially with that EDS crap); and we all know how much Australian retailers are ripping us off!

Do they really think this will work? I can't imagine anyone but the most casual (though a case could be made for 'retarded') gamer would pay those prices; and how many casual gamers are going to say "I want a game - I know, I'll go check the Ubisoft website!"; they're far more likely to either go to a brick and mortar store or use Steam.

The upside to this is that Ubisoft will likely have paid more to get this site up and running than they'll make from it.
