This week's big announcement concerning the collaboration between Xbox Live and Foxtel here in Australia has turned many heads and also has plenty of people asking questions.
Thankfully AusGamers is on the case, with our own Mike Bantick going the extra mile to catch up with Australian Xbox Product manager, Andrew Jenkins, to discuss the future of the service, how it came about and what it means exactly for gamers in terms of pricing, options, delivery and more.

This is what is wrong with the world.

No IQ-like functionality, no AFL or NRL, no HD, no un-metered streaming, likely to still require a contract.
That's about as epic fail as it gets.

A ringing endorsement.

Otherwise Subs like me would cancel Foxtel and just get an X-Box.
Also, you will have to Download that steaming pile of Manure the Foxtel Video Player that snoops around your system.

Hmm, not sure Hoggy, Carriers generally have a hardon for a SLA and reliable delivery of service, best effort for video doesn't really cut it over DSL or satellite. Maybe iteration 2 as they hint? Cable has the benefit (although maybe that can't do this without a CPE fitout) of already broadcasting these channels anyway from the head end, so from my armchair it's imaginably easier..

I think this means "Australia". As in you can't get a sub if your are overseass.
I don't think it means "suburb X and Y but not A, B and C because they have no foxtel cable".

Its not high def though - almost any DSL can get SD video faster than it can be played.
Commercial agreements covering satellite-delivered Austar (pay TV) is why its blocked, so obviously satellite delivery is fine for video ;) Its a commercial and regulatory c***block, nothing more.
This sort of s*** is why people pirate video.

This.
It would be impossible to enforce stopping someone in one suburb get it just because they don't have cable, they'd use their sign up address as their parents/friends etc and stream it over the net.

They're talking about Ausstar protection issues though, which is a regional Australia problem, not international access issues. Maybe the guys can clarify but it definetly reads as metro-only from my chair.
F*****s. I just want uncapped, on-demand video at a reasonable price without a stupid delay from the US release date. I have money to give to someone for this, and have for YEARS now, but nobody will take it.

Syco, you logic would stand up in any normal country, but not here. Ie, technically, you could have Foxtel via satellite anywhere from the cook islands to New Zealand (footprint of the Optus satellite that delivers the service), but you cant. The reason you cant is because the government in all its wisdom decided to protect areas so that only particular companies could sell in that area. This madness goes against consumer protection laws and so I have no idea why they exist. Companies need to compete FFS. I dont know any other sector of business in this country where such laws exist. Imagine if you wanted a carport in Ipswich and you where only allowed to buy it from one particular company. I wonder what effect that would have on prices. Its a joke.

I think the s***** pings forced my hand there - I was never a huge downloader...

Solution with foxtel is just to get a second box at your inlaws place, buy your own dish, and wherever you move, just stick the dish in the ground, find the satelite and off you go.
