Microsoft have finally released a stand-alone 250GB Hard Drive for the Xbox 360, meaning you don't need to singularly purchase the Elite bundle anymore, and can straight-up upgrade your current 360 with some major storage space.
Available for $199.99, the 250GB Hard Drive offers more freedom to download the latest demos, Xbox LIVE Arcade games, the latest titles from Xbox Movies on Demand and more straight to your Xbox 360 console.
Microsoft seem to be ever-slowly opening up their service to gamers having also recently applied an update to the 360 to allow for greater external memory via USB. If you don't own an Xbox 360, stay tuned to AusGamers today to find out how to score yourself a free one.

Not trying to defend MS because a 250GB drive isn't worth 200 bucks to me, but anyway...
Everyone misunderstands this. The price breakdown is as follows:
Physical hardware: $30
'Microsoft Approved' sticker & prevention of warranty voidance: $170
There's tutorials out there on how to get the xbox360 working with a commodity hard disk, so paying for the expensive rubber stamp isn't compulsory. Microsoft is just pricing the kit where they think it'll maximise profits, if it could earn them more money at $50 that's likely where they'd price it.

Must.....avoid....don't have one but must....avoid.
Well I don't want one but my stepson, who turns 18 this month, probably would be ecstatic if I scored one for him.

Do people actually need 250gig for their 360 though? i've got a 120gig and i find it hard to fill up the rest of the 80gig i have left.
I stream a lot of my media through the PC so there's no real need for me to store anything on it really.

it's old, expensive, slow, plagued with hardware problems
250gb for $200 is so laughable, if anyone actually paid $200 for it I pity them
I haven't even plugged mine in for a year or two
I couldn't even be arsed selling it because surely it isn't worth more than $50 by now
