Perhaps it's because they're too busy releasing trailer after trailer for their games, but publishers nowadays don't seem to crow about their games "going gold" as they used to.
Contrary to that trend, Ubisoft have today let us know that the hotly anticipated Splinter Cell Conviction has completed development and is off on its journey to mass-production.
Interestingly, the announcement is only for the Xbox 360 version of the game and makes several references to the game's "Xbox Exclusive" status, even though the release date for the PC version of the game is the same. I suppose it only matters that it's "not on PlayStation 3" - or perhaps its a veiled reference to the fact that nobody is going to be able to play it on PC with Ubi's failing always-on DRM system (Oh Snap!).
Splinter Cell Conviction is on track to hit Xbox 360 and PC on April 15th 2010.

My connection is fine too, but there servers aren't.
And even if they were, I don't want to support their stupid system.

As much as i dislike DRM just as much as any good PC gamer does you HONESTLY can't fault companys for TRYING to stop piracy.
Everyone needs to be fed. Cept trolls.

I'm sure they won't care if people aren't pirating their games.

The fault is that they might be trying to stop piracy but in reality the only harm from this scheme has and will come to their legitimate customers.
Nice one Ubisoft, you aimed for your left foot but somehow managed to hit your right foot!

From my understanding (correct me if i am wrong) all they want is for you to register an account and keep a permanent internet connection in order to verify if you are legit or not.
If that is the case WHY is it so bad? As long as it aint that "Yo you get 3 installs then its dead LAWL" crap that happined to Spore. And if your point is that you HAVE to create that account well Steam makes you logg in everytime just to play any game you purchase via Steam (i am well aware of offline mode).

Oh well if thats ALL they want us to do then sure go nuts. This DRM is retarded from the get go for that very reason. It requires you to be connected to the net to play even single player. If your net cuts out for 10 seconds then WHOOPS, you just lost a bunch of playtime depending on how frequently the game autosaves. When Ubisoft servers have issues, like there have been clearly, the game is unplayable and treats the people who do support their games like f*****g criminals when they want nothing more to enjoy the game they payed $100 for.
Steam is entirely different. If you become disconnected from the net it doesn't kick you out of the game, it doesn't restrict when you can play depending on if their servers are up (because as you mentioned, offline mode) and steam is more of a game delivery service than what it is a true copy protection method. At least that is what I feel.

It's ridiculous to require a permanent internet connection for a single player game. Sure, activate the install over the internet once the first time the game is started maybe, but the message Ubisoft is sending is that if your unlucky enough to have internet connection that drops out on the odd occasion then they're not interested in your business.

I used to think it meant it got warezed.
Though I've found it's not completely untrue as the gold/pirated dates tend to coincide frequently ...
