In their ongoing court battle with Interplay over the licensing of the Fallout IP, Bethesday may have inadvertently
revealed the existence of an MMO, as was submitted to court by the Elder Scrolls developer/publisher during proceedings.
Legal documents describe the product, which has apparently been in development for more than three years, as a "World of WarCraft type MMO" with a development crew of close to a hundred people and costing a ridiculous amount of money.
It's unlikely the game is an MMO based on the Fallout IP as that's the very reason they're in court; Interplay own the MMO dev rights to that franchise, essentially leaving The Elder Scrolls as the likely candidate. Add to this comments made last year by Bethesda the series would indeed continue along with the purchase of the domain www.elderscrollsonline.com and you pretty much have enough evidence.

I have a lot of MMO hate & weariness. Playing the STO open beta has reinvigorated my hope that the MMO technology platform can deliver fun and unique gameplay without it being yet-another-f*****g-fantasy-MMO, or WoW in Space.
I don't know if STO has legs (the last patch added some nice polish) but I still enjoy the beta every day, the instanced space combat is fun, and different to other MMO gameplay I've had a run at. The away team missions need a lot of work though - they play like a bad freeby MMO.

they never end so the bosses etc have to re-spawn
which is where it turns into a job more than a game 'oh i have to be on at 6pm tonight for the raid' because you're hunting for some lame loot
f*** wow and f*** mmo's

Bioware's Star Wars The Old Republic is looking really goddam awesome and I think that's because they seem to be focusing heavily on the story and dialogue components. I also wasn't disappointed to hear they were working on an MMO, because they already had 2 awesome looking offline RPG's announced (dragon age/mass effect 2) and we already know they have plans for mass effect 3.
Bethesda however have not made any such announcements, so if they really do have an mmo in devel, I really hope they still have another singleplayer RPG in the oven as well.

Buff, Click Monster, Click Attack, Wait, Wait, Wait, Loot, Repeat
I'm waiting for something truly fun & unique in the massively multiplayer genre though I'm partly scared that the WOW model is so entrenched that I won't recognise it when it comes out.

It's when you want to get into larger scale content like 10 man or 25 man raiding that it becomes serious business. If you want to run the content regularly you need to be in a guild, and if a guild wants to get anywhere they need to set regular raiding times. And all of this guild management takes a lot of time (recruiting, scheduling raids, stopping the monkeys from throwing s*** at each other etc).
I can't imagine other EQ-like MMOs to be any different.

Yeh absolutely.
That's why I'm liking space combat in STO - it feels VERY arcadey, you're always on the move, balancing shields, swinging your ship about for a sweet spot broadside volley overlapping forward and aft batteries, and have to be watching above and below for enemy signals and ranges. If you die you just respawn and punch it full impulse back into the fight.
Once you get beyond the starter ship you have a crew to manage with their own skills you can bring into play in combat. Then you do a fleet action with another 50 or so warships PEW PEW PEW for a half hour. No guild, no bulls***, just rock up to the instance and get matched up with the rest of the fleet.
It just seems so much more engaging than click mob, cycle skills, loot, find new mob..

They can try and explain it however they want - it costs you this to play sport, this to go to the cinema - and our game is only THIS! I don't care, I'm still not paying by the month for a game.
The beauty about our hugely expanding games market is there is so much choice now :-P More games than you can poke a stick at, compared to 10 years ago when everyone was playing the same games ;-)

Look at the unexpected success of Borderlands. No one thought it would be as big a hit as it has become.
People have been begging for a good co-op sandbox rpg for ages and ages. What we have been given over the years has been fairly lacklustre.
Bethesda should also take note of the large modding community that follows their games. Release a full editing kit on day one and design their game with ease of modding in mind.

Actually Hog its not that different to other MMOs. If anything you can do stuff solo as much as in a group. Very blurred lines between classes though. It plays much like Pirates of the Burning Sea but without the painful loss in death that PotBs has.
I've been enjoying immensely as there is a lot from all the ST Tv shows in it. It does keep faithful to Star Trek in that sense although I think the Crystaline Entity is badly done by...it gets wasted in seconds because it's spawn is camped.

Also, its about time other developers start putting some thought and effort into their user interfaces. UI seems to always be pushed to the side as something unimportant, but in an MMO especially its hugely important. In Star Trek, the UI while you're controlling the ship is ok (if albeit a little bit crowded and confusing), but the UI in the bits where you're on foot just makes me sad. Its so big and gumby and I can't scale it and it feels laggy and they have that stupid "Walk up to people and press F to talk to them" interface going on that is just nonsenical, especially when theres multiple people all next to each other you can talk to. Feedback during the combat is pretty woeful too, you'd shoot some guy, and it would look like you missed because it had no effect, then a few seconds later he'd play his knockback and lose a big chunk of life. Its difficult to gauge if combat is going good or its going bad, since it all feels like the same confusing mess till suddenly you realise, oh, while I was fighting this guy, my away team have all run off and died. I dunno, I just felt the game did an extremely poor job of conveying any useful information to me at all.
Since you're spending 95% of your time in an MMO clicking things on the interface and looking at the interface, I would have thought it should be something developers would put a fair bit of time and effort into.

The game as a whole isn't polished enough to take ~50US+subscription from me.
