Neogaf have a forum post up boasting what an already stunning looking Wii title like Super Mario Galaxy would look like if output in HD at 720p. The end result, as you can see, is somewhat annoying because this is really the sort of visual quality that should be standard now, yet Nintendo continue to ignore the HD revolution.

For those who need to know, this was possible through a Wii emulator set to output at 720p. It would be awesome for Nintendo to release a new Wii HD-ready, if only because it's obvious their games are capable of looking like this.

According to that thread, there's still a bunch of shaders etc that the emulator doesn't reproduce in SMG, so that's not even as nice as it could look?

Hurry up and release a WiiHD ninty, so even if we still have to play the same low-poly games until the next gen, at least we can do it in higher resolutions.

Yeah im not sure why they havent updated the hardware, seems like the logical thing to do, they could release a HD version with HDMI and faster proccessor.

Let's get them to focus on 5.1 audio before moving into HD.

Wont the reason for no HD be that the console lacks the power to process at the increased resolution?

Have a look at this screenshot(Smash Bros) or this one(Mario Kart) for some screenies from Dolphin running 1080p. Damn nice. Just a shame you more or less need a PC that'd be about 3-4x the cost of a Wii to get the same sort of results (and have it playable)..

May we please have WiiHD Nintendo? Pretty please?

You're going to use neogaf (another forum) as a news source now? 0_o

Seems appropriate when it's about a thread on NeoGAF.

News can come from any where giri. Should we ignore all the stories coming out of Iran at the moment because they're not appearing on news.com.au?

I think the main reason Nintendo haven't released a WiiHD is for compatibility reasons. Nintendo is like the Mac of consoles, "it just works". If they designed a wii with 720p in mind, how many games would require patches or minor overhauls of the UI? What if developers started releasing or designing games that played best on or only supported the new Wii?

I haven't touched my Wii in years. I actually paid money for Super Mario Galaxy, and it was a piece of s*** that could only appeal to Mario fans. I'm still living in the dream that some decent games will come out, regardless of the res.

I'll give Dolphin a go at some point, but cam someone tell me, is it bound more to CPU or to graphics card? I have a i7-920, so probably have plenty of processing power, and a 9600GT that's easily enough upgradeable if I so desired.

And yeah, I can't see Nintendo replacing it with a HD version any time soon - most developers would just decide to develop for the higher end version only or abuse the new features, removing backwards compatability.

Yeah but using neogaf as your source for a news story is like using qgl for your source, or news.com.au for your source, it's basically a bunch of 14 year olds on a forum posting random s***.

It's only showing off screenshots of what the Wii might've been. It doesn't really matter if this turns out to be fake.

I honestly don't see a problem with it, as long as neogaf isn't ausgamers ONLY source.

I can understand why Nintendo chose not to make the Wii HD though. It was a bit of a gamble to produce a console like the Wii. More powerful hardware would've driven up the cost of R&D and production, increasing the risk.

Oh absolutely, I can see _why_ they did it, and it obviously paid off. There's been rumblings of a Wii-HD for ages though, and this goes to show that it would be a worthwhile upgrade.

Even if we're not going to get high poly models etc or numerous other things that would bring it to par with PS3 and X360, a higher res is still going to make Wii games easier on the eye.

It's not fake re so - go look up the Dolphin emulator and check it out. Obviously need to rip your own Wii games to an ISO file to make use of it, but it can be done & works without too many problems.

Thats not what i'm saying, i'm saying that you probably should have made it a forum topic, not a news topic, if you're just starting a random discussion with only another forum as your source, and no real news.

I read gaf more than any other forum, probably my most read website, but ......... this isn't news.com.au that's all.

To be fair, I think Nintendo made a smart move by taking a big risk and releasing a console that made no leaps in audio/visuals (unlike Sony and Microsoft and every console before), but instead, diverged and concentrated on hardware that provided a unique gameplay experience. Oh and it meant the Wii was offering a new control scheme at a significantly lower and affordable price than the PS3 and Xbox360. Having said this I wouldn't mind a WiiHD.
