Pro-gamer Johnathan “Fatal1ty” Wendel, has been hard at work showing off the latest solid state drive from Fusion-io, targeted at gamers:
"The ioXtreme supercharges high-end PCs and workstations. I predict this technology will fundamentally change the way software is designed, allowing developers to create a new class of applications that seamlessly handle massive amounts of data," Fatal1ty said. “Imagine playing the most intense game, working on complex 3-D graphics, manipulating massive files, ripping multiple DVDs and installing a new application -- all simultaneously. The technology is crazy and works at the speed I need.”

“Johnathan’s experience with high-end computing has given him a unique insight into the disruption our core technology brings to all levels of computing,” said Steve Wozniak, chief scientist of Fusion-io. “We look forward to working with an incredible young talent like him. The ioXtreme is a good example of how combining the wisdom of veterans, such as myself, with next generation expertise such as Johnathan’s, will take Fusion-io’s performance revolution into the future.”
And yes, that's Steve Wozniak of Apple fame. Also, check out the hilarious video at Fatal1ty's website at the top.

We've been talking in the forums a little about the advantages of SSD, so this might be of interest to those trying to decide what direction their next upgrade will be in.

Is fatality some sort of engineer or is he just the poster boy here?

That's all well and good but do you get good FPS in WOW?

I think thermite's question was more a case of "Is Fatal1ty actually involved in the development or are they just giving him money to say nice things?"

Are hard drives really the bottleneck for doing that many data intensive operations simultaneously? I would have thought that we'd also need a new gen of CPU to start ripping and burning and s*** like its crazytown?

Exactly mantarook - I think I was pretty clear on that.
They say a lot of stuff about fatality being 'hard at work' and that he has all this knowledge and experience.... but isn't he just a guy that likes to eat chips and play puter? Or am I wrong about that?

Isn't Elle McPherson just a chick that looks good?

It's like any other promotional s***. You get the person that stereotypes the industry and you put their name on products and register them to appear at any event that will accept them. I dunno what you're finding so hard to understand, thermite.

Leeroy Jenkins is somewhere out there, doing similar, appearing at conferences and what not.

of course, he's a gamer not an engineer. S***, he's got nothing on Koreans.

I sorta thought it was obvious from my post but maybe the subtlety was just too much

yes, he's just a dude that plays games. He's a poster boy for the hardcore gamers. I am much more interested by the involvement of the Woz in this than I am fatal1ty, from a technical perspective anyway - but having fat's name on it at least draw my attention to it (and now its in your brain)

Manty - that's a very cool video. But I gathered they also included some really zomg quick hardware for CPU and Memory as well.

I guess the point I'm trying to make (badly) is that you can't add amazingly awesome SSD to a system and get unlimited power without encountering new bottlenecks.

generally, yes hdd i/o is the killer
naturally you'll get your gimp machine here and there with insufficient ram installed or some crusty out of date cpu but assuming your cpu and ram are adequate by today's standards it's your hdd you'll be waiting for most of the time

actually for me this has been the case since I got into computers, cos I've always made sure I have plenty of memory in them. hard disk speeds have always shat me off - admittedly, to less of a degree the past 3 or so years with the nicer disks we've had, but they're still the slow point... crunch crunch crunch waiting waiting

Pinky it seems you are the one who does not understand. It had not been established that fatality was just the promo-girl. Read trog's post it has an engineer talking about 'working hard with talent' or something - sure makes it sound like fatality is actually physically building this himself.
I was just asking for clarification. You can be such an a******.

Yeah, same here. My hard drives are starting to show their ages (I think 1 of them might be about 3+ years old now) and are definitely the bottle neck in my machine.

thermite: Yeah from this quote here:

it does make it sound like fatlity is indeed working on the technical side of the fence and helping to design them, especially the "next generation expertise" bit so I see why you're asking too.

Nah this looks like the same io drives they have had for ages rebaged. If I remember correctly they have been working on all that stuff for a while already.

Should get his butt to quake con for the Quake Live comp

I'm just waiting for Obes to start jumping up and down ranting about how moving from a mechanical disk to a memory chip based drive increases the risk of drive failure :/

either you haven't googled up on the subject matter of this thread, or you're a little upset that Pinky's introduced your mum to Greek style.

if it's the latter - get over it dude... we're a multicultural melting pot

Video was mighty impressive and so much overkill but s***, least you wont need an upgrade anytime soon!

works at the speed I need

Oh get over yourself you stupid s***. You play games for money and thats it.

“Imagine playing the most intense game, working on complex 3-D graphics, manipulating massive files, ripping multiple DVDs and installing a new application -- all simultaneously."

If you're playing "the most intense game" then i'm pretty sure you wont be designing 3D graphics or anything else that isn't totally automatic

It's quicker to copy 700mb than to drop a dvd in its box out of what seems to be a 2nd story window. that fast.

"works at the speed I need"

but can it give you love (ok maybe one day it will..and not it that weird way), but more importantly, can it make you poptarts?

“Imagine playing the most intense game, working on complex 3-D graphics, manipulating massive files, ripping multiple DVDs and installing a new application -- all simultaneously."
