We've managed to find a moment to regale some of the news that was thrown about this morning as yours truly sat through both Nintendo and Sony's pre-show press conferences. Both events gave away some pretty interesting pieces of news, but Nintendo was first in line, so here are a few points gleamed from their press conference.
  • Nintendo revealed New Super Mario Bros Wii a four-player co-op/competitive side-scroller based on the successful DS outing, New Super Mario Bros.
  • Wii Fit Plus was announced which adds even more to your fitness regime as well as 15 new balance mini games
  • Red Steel 2 from Ubisoft can only be played with Wii Motion Plus
  • Square-Enix will be releasing Final Fantasy Crystal Bearers exclusively for Wii, and a new Kingdom Hearts exclusively for DS (which actually looks pretty good, from a visual stand-point)
  • Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story will arrive for DS later this year
  • Golden Sun DS was finally revealed after years of speculation and prayers from gamers (me being one of them)
  • The DS is going to be used with new innovation in the form of interactive novels. The first being James Patterson's Woman's Murder Club: Games of Passion
  • A DS-exclusive open-world action title from Ubisoft was unveiled called C.O.P. The Recruit, and looks like it will seriously give GTA's DS outing a run for its money
  • A DSiWare download only version of Mario Vs Donkey Kong was shown, which will offer complete level design for user-generated content to then be shared and rated with other players
  • WarioWare DYI is another user-generated DS title that encourages players to craft their own unique and whacky 3-second mini games
  • It was also revealed a deal with Facebook has been struck where DSi owners can use the system's camera to take photos, edit them (on the DSi) and then upload them to Facebook
  • Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, unveiled the Wii Vitality Sensor, a Wii Remote add-on much like a pulse monitor, which he says may be used in future for relaxation software, not too dissimilar in focus to the likes of the Brain Age games
  • For the more hardcore gamers Nintendo then showed Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles (another on-rails shooter), Dead Space Extraction (which we've revealed already is an on-rails shooter), as well as the aforementioned Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M
There wasn't a great deal more thrown out in the way of announcements, but I'll be posting my actual impressions of their pre-show event later on today, so stay tuned.
