Funcom has "lifted the veil" on their next MMO title The Secret World, kicking out the first teaser trailer and new details about the game.
"The Secret World" takes place in our own, modern-day world. Players can explore locations such as New York, London, and Seoul, as they unravel the mysteries, legends and myths that make up our world and its history. But the real and realistic will clash with the unreal and fantastical, as the darkness of the secret world approaches. Not only will `The Secret World' offer a setting never before experienced in an MMO, Funcom is also expanding on the genre standards by introducing gameplay that is not based on classes or levels. Players will have the freedom to become whatever they want to be and play however they want to play, allowing them to explore the world at will and master anything from voodoo and black magic to martial arts and modern firearms.
AusGamers had a look at this one at the recent GDC 2009 event and we'll have some in-depth info from that online shortly, but for now you can check out the debut teaser trailer right here or suss out the official site darkdaysarecoming.com for more specifics.

It sounds cool indeed; they didn't show off any gameplay at GDC (SAD FACE) but I got a bunch of interesting info that I'll (hopefully) have up in the next day or two.

Why does everything have to be an MMO, why can't it be contained but awesome anyway?

I asked this exact question. The answer, as always, is "we'll see". They're /really/ aware of Australia though (prolly more so than any other MMO developer we've talked to, and, not to toot our own horn, I think largely because of our efforts making sure they don't forget about us in terms of client mirroring etc), so I'm sure it'll get taken into consideration. More info on this once I finish writing up my thing!@#

Whats coming out August 22nd? And the mere fact I have to ask the question "Whats coming out August 22nd?" means it wont be a WoW crusher.

I can't think of any major MMOs being launched around then (does mortal online count? Haha.) Well, there are a few scatted projections about various releases in the next few quarters of this year. Maybe its a specific date for one of those.

Theres a blizzcon on August 21/22 though, if that's somehow related.

August 22nd is indeed Blizzcon and I think (hope) they will unveil there new MMO (not WoW 2), since no one can take em on, they are making a new IP MMO them selves.

Sure they don't intend to 'kill' there own title but they have stated that it will be different (enough) to WoW that they should co-exist, but it would be foolish to think that they wont come out with another hugely successful title, they just have too much going for them.

Eagerly awaiting that write up Trog :D (and keep the mirroring going)

Ah, fair enough. I just hope their new mmo isn't another fantasy one, fantasy is so done to death.

It is, I like the sound of The Secret World as it has modern day realism & FPS mixed in, and from what I can tell no Sci-Fi... woot!

I will laugh so hard if Blizzard releases this new MMO and WoW just crushes it as well. The irony shall be bittersweet.

I still hold some faith in TOR.

TOR looks nice, not so sure about the artistic style, but it's the gameplay and depth that counts with MMO.

Yeah, TOR looks great so far, its pretty much the only MMO I'm really looking forward to, hopefully it satisifies the craving I got for a good sci-fi mmo. I was hoping before they announced it it was going to be a Mass Effect MMO, but a kotor MMO is good enough :P

too bad it's set in the star wars universe. I'd really like a zombie fps mmo.
