30% off Rockstar Games on Steam This Weekend

Steam have a special deal on all games from Rockstar this weekend - including Grand Theft Auto 4 - so if you're looking to save 30% on a bunch of cool games, might be worth a gander. The news post on the Steam site mentions several games and then links to the Rockstar catalogue, but I can only see GTA4 in there - your mileage may vary.

As far as I understand it, Australia doesn't get any Rockstar game except GTA IV on steam. So no discount for us on anything other than this, cause we can't get them here, unless you use proxies and what not.

I'm going over to the US with my laptop in a couple of days, does anyone know if I'll be able to set up a US account on Steam while I'm there and then use it as though I'm in the US when I come back?

AFAIK you need a credit card with a US billing address, so just logging on in the states isn't going to help you.

Use Entropay. It basically simulates a CC, you just put in a (fake) US adress and add money to it from your actual CC, and away you go. To get steam to work though you need to use a couple of apps called YourFreedom and ProxyCap (http://www.your-freedom.net/index.php?id=111). Dunno about legality, but f*** it, they charge too much here.

Holy s*** I think single user piracy is a little less illegal then fraud dude. If it's a cost issue buy it from an overseas retailer and have it shipped over.

Fraud shmaud. They are still getting paid it is still my money (if I were to do this) I am spending.

Also ones account isn't associated with where it was initially activated, it is associated to wherever it thinks it is, hence why proxies do work. So if you were in the US and you booted up your account, you would get US prices and games.

I doubt its fraud too. At the very most I'd say its probably just violating the EULA of Steam (for which they can probably just terminate your Steam account). Why they would bother when you're actually going out of your way to give them money (instead of just pirating it) would be beyond me... but stranger things have happened, so who knows.

I was talking about faking your address for the Entropay thing. Things like financial services are usually mired in legalities.

Also I would have thought the reason Steam doesn't offer it to Australia is due to licensing. Sure the developer gets money still but the licensed distributor doesn't. The only difference between this and normal piracy is that you can feel all warm and fuzzy knowing the people who created the game are getting paid, you are still breaking the law. Not only that but I'm sure a distribution deal would include an upfront payment to the developer that the distributor hopes to recoup through sales.

Not sure if piracy is a federal offence either, international fraud most certainly is.

That is 100% definitely the main reason for sure. All these big companies are trying to protect their investment in local territories and territorial licensing - because the reason for that licensing is so they can price gouge you in the local currency and prevent you from taking advantage of cheap international markets.

I'm not convinced its fraud to give someone the wrong address when ordering a product that you don't expect to get mailed to you. Here's what the QLD Police have to say about fraud:

Here in Queensland, the laws on fraud involve dishonesty in any of these situations:

* obtaining property belonging to someone else
* applying someone else's property to one's own use
* causing a detriment to another person or entity
* gaining a benefit or advantage for any person; and
* inducing or causing any person to deliver property to another person

To the best of my knowledge it's certainly NOT illegal for you to order a copy of a game from the United States because it came out there first. Territorial license agreements basically just mean that ONLY that licensed entity can sell a product - it doesn't usually mean you're not free to buy it from some other territory. It's also totally cool to violate TPMs (technological protection measures) in order to play games or watch movies you bought from overseas.
