It was inevitable Activision wouldn't sit on the Call of Duty franchise, especially after the huge success that was, and remains to be, Call of Duty 4. Recently reports of Call of Duty 5 being in the works and going back to the series' WWII roots began to surface with further speculation Infinity Ward would
not be involved in the project.
These reports and speculation have all but been officially confirmed by Activision themselves. The series is indeed heading back to WWII, this time focusing more on the Pacific end of the campaign.
Call of Duty 5: World at War will be developed by Treyarch, who were responsible for COD3, and will utilise the same engine used for COD4 with a host of new features and gameplay innovations.
According to reports, players will have the ability to burn buildings and set grass on fire in this iteration, while a new Flamethrower weapon will also be introduced. For the most part, you'll play as the US fighting the Japanese, however, it has also been revealed you'll play campaigns as the Russians invading Germany. Another new feature for the single-player mode will see you having the ability to finally command your troops in the field, while multiplayer will borrow heavily from the COD4 blue-print with Perks derived from WWII-centric abilities and uses.
The reports go on to say the lead build of the game is the Xbox 360 platform, however, it is being developed for PS3 and PC as well. Rumour also has it Infinity Ward are now working on COD6 which will continue its focus on Modern Warfare (though this
is just a rumour for the time-being).
We contacted Actvision Australia for anything absolutely official, but were unable to get any comment from them. As soon as we see anything in the way of screens, press releases or videos though, you'll be the first to know.

Actually if they wanted to be different, adding a mission involving a certain Enola Gay could be just the ticket they need to set this one aside from the rest. Sure that's really in bad taste, but it's probably one of the few things that hasn't been done in a WW2 shooter yet. That or making a POW camp simulator?

OBJECTIVE: Find weapons of mass destruction.
The thing is, the map doesn't actually have WMDs and there are infinitely respawning enemies.

Does anyone remember the SuperWeapons7 mod for the original Doom?
Imagine shooting the BFG twice as fast as the chaingun. Was fun in multiplayer :)

Designer: Guys guys, I just had this great idea for a game that I reckon will go down really well... wait for it... we're going to do a game based on World War Two.
Board member #1: ... Release the lions.
Board member #2 through 7: Nono, I think he's onto something, that could really sell.
Sigh.
Somebody bring back traditional FASA please. No, not the Microsoft bulls*** butchered version of the team, actual FASA. Or Dynamix.

Oh come on, can you imagine the PC crowd's reaction if you put out a game where the factions consisted of Israel, USA, US-occupied-Iraq, Turkey etc vs Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt, Libya, Iraq, Iran... yeh I think not :/
