Founded is 2003, Obsidian Entertainment is best known for creating RPG titles like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, Fallout: New Vegas, and Pillars of Eternity. Founded by veteran developer Brian Fargo, inXile Entertainment are also known for creating RPGs, with the likes of Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera being embraced by the PC community. Both developers are now part of Microsoft Studios.
Which brings the number of Microsoft Studios developers to 13 diverse teams.
And as per the announcement from Matt Booty, Corporate Vice President, Microsoft Studios, both developers will remain independent when it comes to the creative vision of each studio.
It was important for us to find studio partners who have strong creative visions, a mastery of their medium and are expert world-builders. Obsidian and inXile embody all of these qualities while also bringing expertise on the PC platform and a unique RPG focus to the table.
While they do share a common heritage, the two creative teams at Obsidian and inXile are very different. They will continue to operate autonomously with their unique talents, IP and expertise. As part of Microsoft Studios, Obsidian and inXile will have the support and freedom to fully realize their creative ambitions on both existing franchises and new RPG projects.
With Xbox Game Pass coming to PC, this move no doubt will benefit PC fans of Obsidian and inXile - in addition to Xbox owners. Recently games from both Obsidian and inXile were only made possible due to crowdfunding so with the backing of Microsoft this will no doubt lead to bigger and more exciting RPGs in the future.
